I really dont understand why people without their own garage and charger find it convenient to buy an electric vehicle.
@supraman321na4
@supraman321na4 7 месяцев назад
And literally none of them paid attention to any single bit of knowledge that any person driving an EV should be aware of. Prepare and pre-condition your battery, preheat and plan your charging in advance of important travel, you know, common sense.... Every problem could have been avoided and the funny part was, every ignorant driver was bound to end up at the chargers, their computer literally directs them there. The people stuck there are the same people that you see that run their cars out of gas and are stuck on the side of the road, it doesn't seem as big a deal because they all ended up at different points on the highway but now their computer sent them to a charger. Our problem is more a lack of competency and general common sense, noone calls out others incompetency anymore for fear of getting cancelled but I may just go to a supercharger if our weather gets that bad and just teach people how to avoid this in the future ...

@@supraman321na4couldn’t have put it better myself it baffles me the number of people who spend wild amounts of money on vehicles and do absolutely no research and don’t even understand what they’re buying to begin with and I personally think that ev’s are amazing if used properly for every quirk an ev has the ICE vehicle has its own equivalent and vice versa this is partially due to a lack of infrastructure but in this scenario I can almost certainly guarantee this is a lack of competence and preparation or general knowledge of their vehicles people fear the opposite of what they own because it’s “different” and they don’t understand it they’re to quick to spew incorrect facts as if they’re true statements not for the purpose of educating others or stating their clearly bias opinion but with the arrogant purpose of making the ladder look bad

@@corbinb5410 good to see others just being realistic, an EV is just another tool and it's current state is not what it will be 20 years from now, one thing humans do well is constantly strive for generalized improvements in efficiency for work (most forgot that "work" can be just a description of an electric motor being operated to turn wheels). It is always going to be inevitable, we will transition (albeit clumsily) towards a lower entropy future.

Wish the reporter had dug a little deeper. Were these folks on a trip? Locals who can't charge at home? Dozens of cars waiting looks bad on camera, but there are 10s of thousands of Teslas in that bitter cold having no problem at all - because they can stay plugged in at home. There are problems that are unique to EVs, but as drivers learn what those issues are (and the number of places to charge increases) the drivers won't get themselves caught out like we see in this video.
@dmitryk7320
@dmitryk7320 7 месяцев назад
Won't get caught out? What I have learned over the last few days is that travel range suggested by car's software doesn't match the real range. And discrepancy is huge! How any sane person can plan anything without knowing if he will get to his destination in time or at all?
@jimmurphy5355
@jimmurphy5355 7 месяцев назад
@@dmitryk7320 You don't say which car you are talking about. What I have found, having driven first a model 3, and now a model Y for a combined 124,000 miles is that the car has steadily gotten better at estimating range - especially if you use the navigation to specify a destination. I find the car is very accurate at predicting how much charge I will have when I reach the next charger or final destination. The route planner takes into account the charge at the beginning, the speed limits and actual road speeds based on current traffic, elevation changes, wind, and of course temperature. If it says I will arrive at the next charger with, for example, 11% of my battery remaining, it is usually with 2% of that estimate. I always use the route planner - it's built in, super easy to use, and has real time access to the internet to know about wind, temperature, traffic, and how full the chargers in the area are. You can get yourself stuck, but the car gives you tons of accurate info to minimize the chance of that happening.

Not being on the same continent as Chicago, would I be right in thinking this is the very first time that the locals have experienced sub zero temperatures? This can be the only reason they are buying cars that are useless when it's a bit chilly! My 54 year old MGC is coping perfectly well with the sub zero temperatures we're experiencing here.

This is more of a metaphysical thinking question but what the hell... This isn't the first winter in...well EVER. This also isn't a particularly bad winter, or the worst winter. But this is the first time I'm seeing all these...I mean, a LOT of news reports on Tesla's breaking down with crappy charges during the winter bit. So...the question, is why now? Seriously, I genuinely want to know if there is a secret kabal of highly influential people pulling the news strings behind the curtain (behind the scenes) feeding us this line about how awful Tesla cars are. For the record, I don't own a Tesla; don't really care too much for them. But still! I genuinely am curious, and want to know what is going on...because any normal person with at least two brain cell can tell that there is a little bit of tomfoolery going on here. what give?!

It happened because lot of fools bought EV`s that did not know electric cars needed warm batteries to be charged and now these fools is running out of juice while waiting in line... The people that bought the cars in the beginning was smarter and avoided this because they did know how electric cars work and how the battery work in the cold (or rather how the battery do not work in the cold...).

Maybe it's just a perfect storm of the number of people without home charging using the same set of Superchargers that happen to fail during a cold snap. To me, I can't tell from the video how these factors fit together, what causes what, etc. It does seem to show that, for now in wintery North America, the electric vehicle only makes best sense if you can home charge. Makes me wonder how Sweden and Norway handle this, beyond their relatively short driving distances.
@safeandeffectivelol
@safeandeffectivelol 7 месяцев назад
I bet it's a lot more people who live in apartments or condos who are now buying EV's because they see more charging stations. People with a garage who can charge at home should not have these problems unless they use the car as a taxi or delivery.

It's because the MSM and social media are pushing their agenda and are not being honest about the reality of the EV's downside. EVs might be ok in some cases for some people but they are trying to cram them down everyone's throats and take away our choices.

Sorry, this is going to be long… I have several issues with this story. Tesla, as part of its computer software, shows the Superchargers that are available, off-line or if there is a wait to charge at any given location. If you have very little charge remaining on your EV, perhaps it would be wise to navigate to another Supercharger location (BTW, if you use Tesla Trip Planning to navigate to a charger, it automatically ‘preconditions’ the battery for optimal charging speeds. If the ‘car expert’ in the story owns a ‘certified Tesla’ service center, why is he going to a Supercharger to charge? Also, if you do precondition with an already low state of charge, and go to a Supercharger station with a wait, you run the risk of running out of energy before you can charge as it also takes range away from the batter to precondition. Honestly, I think the real problem is information. A lot of people in the market for an EV just think they are cool and don’t do enough research about them to see if they can deal with the peculiarities that come with EV ownership (they are not for everyone). Also, EV owners think of DC fast chargers, like Superchargers and Electrify America, as if they are ‘gas stations’. The main reason for DC charging is for road tripping, which I don’t think any of the people stranded were (would have been nice to know that part of the story). If you are going to own an EV, the main place you should charge is at home (which is also cheaper). It’s my opinion that if you don’t have a committed place to charge an EV, like home or work, you shouldn’t own one.

BMS doesn´t work if you never reach ~10% on your battery though. Law of chemicals.If the BMS cannot work, because you only run your battery from assumed 80 to 30% then your battery will die young. This rule isn´t just valid for e-cars btw. The same rule applies to tablets, smartphones, laptops etc which use the same or similar types of rechargeabable batteries.

Lithium ion batteries don’t take kindly to very cold weather. They tend to drain faster when not in use and charge slower. Preconditioning the battery doesn’t always help. If you charge your battery every time it reaches 30%, you’ll be charging all the time.
