That truck is really cool. This is exactly the scenario that I wanted to see play out. The reduction in mpg on the way back was probably mostly from the weight of the car being towed rather than the charging. Thanks for using your truck for so many interesting videos Andre

Most likely. How many hp does 3300watt/hours of energy require? Maybe 5hp?
@Sylvan_dB
@Sylvan_dB 3 года назад
@@jldude84 If 100% efficient, 1hp is 746 watts. Worst case 1hp should be able to produce 500w. For example, a small generator capable of 3300 watt continuous would often have a 6hp to 8hp engine because there is very little rotating mass to carry a demand surge. A 10kw generator will often have less than 20hp engine because larger rotating mass will carry over. I expect 5hp is pretty close. Perfect would be about 4.5hp and a portable 9hp generator would do it easily.
@jldude84
@jldude84 3 года назад
@@Sylvan_dB That's interesting...if that's the case one might assume that it would only take 10hp for 7-8 hours to charge this Spark up completely...seems like a small amount for a car with 200+ lbft of torque that can go ~75 miles on the same charge.

I thought about this because I have an EV with 115 miles of range. But level 2 charge is very slow...only 20 to 30 miles per hour. A better solution would be a battery that can load into the rear of the truck and do DC fast charge. Even a slow one would fill up an EV at 3 miles per minute. Most people that get stranded just need a little range to get to a charger nearby.

I still feel like the ultimate would be a diesel-electric hybrid. A regular EV but with a little 1000cc 50hp diesel to just chug along idling to pump ~20kw/h into the battery for those emergencies when you're completely out of juice in the middle of nowhere. Maybe some solar panels too in the roof...

I think this and the adventure bike test the other guys did, does a really good job demonstrating how well the truck's inverter supplies power even while driving. 13mpg isn't terrible considering; trailer rolling resistance, the drag from the car and the load off the inverter. It will be interesting to see how the Super Duties do if they get the same or higher rated inverter.

The bucket analogy is good. To take it a little but further, as the bucket fills up you slow down the fill rate to avoid spilling over. A battery spillover would be very bad, so the charge rate reduces as the battery fills up the last 20% or so. And when you first start filling an empty bucket, you might start with a dribble to make sure you are aimed at the bucket to avoid spraying wild or tipping over the bucket. An empty battery also starts charging with a reduced rate for the first 10% or so.

You also have to consider the battery age on theirs is 7 years, so there has been some degradation and loss of range. Mine is 5 years old and gets 90+ miles in mixed driving. @@fabulousoffroaddesigns5080 To calculate you need to go by the miles per kWh, which is a fluid number based on driving factors. their miles per kWh was 4.8. Which for a 19kWh battery would equal to 91.2 miles. Since they used 14.8kWh at 4.8 miles per kWh it calculates to 71.04 miles of range, since they went 70.4 miles I would say it is pretty accurate. BTW, their trip was not all highway miles.

The electric car did 70 miles. The truck did around 19 mpg empty. It charged the little car at around 238v (would have taken 5h+ for full charge) It kept charging during the trip back but got 13.9 mpg The little car got around 30-40% charge from the truck.

Hopefully TFL makes your Truck payment with as much content as you have provided the channel with it.

You are proving that once this is in super duty trucks , they will be tow/recovery rigs for ev cars. Especially since every newer ev has the ability to charge much faster.

Every new EV has range indicator and charger locations in the nav. Really no reason to run out of power, short of a broken charger.

Come to think about that Is there will be any future BEV with a gas generator like the i3 REx? Or a PHEV truck?

You should try this again with your new Mini Cooper SE and see how much power the F150 can provide.

Andres ET (electric tow)service. LOL Cool test. Like the time stamps. Are you going to do this test with the Tesla? How many potatoes will it take to make the Chevy go again?
