How do you drive 1350km in an EV? Drive hard and charge fast!
We drove the Kona Electric (2020 64kWh) from Calgary to Winnipeg in 1 day.
We encountered slow charging with some Petro Canada and Co-op Chargers but we got there in the end.
*Please note that this trip occurred in October 2022. Charging cost had increased at Petro Canada chargers in November 2022.

I just finished a road trip to Canmore from Edmonton in our 22 Kona preferred. On our way down, we stopped at the Petro at Cross Iron. It was about -11 C but it only gave us around 40kW. Keep making these videos!! It is great and you are one of the reasons that I ended up choosing the Kona over the Leaf. I would love to see more videos on the extreme weather side. Would love to see a video when it hits -40C in Edmonton. Good job and keep up the great work. Keep representing Edmonton.

Thanks for the vids. Travelled with our 2021 Kona Winnipeg to Vancouver Oct 2022 with same poor Petro Can/ Co-op charging speeds. Using PlugShare App at the charging locations you mentioned with comments on our experience. Some good but mostly poor charging at PC and CO. Brian

We made this trip but with Edmonton as a starting point. We were in an Ioniq 5 and had the same experience at PetroCan and Coop. The charger seems to lock the max current output based on the BMS’s initial request. We would reset the charging session once the battery temp was above 20 C and the charger would deliver it’s max available. The chargers also don’t seem to hit their theoretical max output if one of the paired units is not working.

@@READYSTEADYCHARGE I’m hoping that the Electrify Canada that is being built in Edmonton will have the new chargers that Electrify America is using. They seem more dependable.

We do this trip about 2ic a year (but starting point is rural South AB, close to Lethbridge) we have a caravan as it's easier with all the kids, but we have a lightning arriving shortly. Good to see it's possible, however seems like having to rely on Petro is less than ideal! Gotta hope there is no chinook on the return trip haha!

My battery had a charge of 26% and a temperature of 26c at a Petro-Canada charger and my charging speed was only 38 KW, so I disconnected and went 2 kilometres down the road to a 100 KWh Circuit Électrique charger and received 74 KW ? 😮😊

At this point in time, it's apparent that the only truly reliable EV charging network is Tesla's supercharger system. I have watched many videos similar to yours, which detail numerous, inexplicable charging issues with the current EV fast charging network.

I'm not surprised to see the power limited to 40kW at Petro Canada and Coop which are using similar hardware. There's apparently a communication problem with the Kona (and some other Kia/Hyundai)... I've experienced this multiple time at PC. Last time I tried in Nova Scotia, I had to stop/unplug/plug back/start 4 times to finally get my full +75kW power (battery was well above 25C and SOC was at 10%). My friend with an Ioniq 5 never had this problem at PC. Because of that, I always try to not go at PC... and that's easy to do here with tons of DC fast charger in Quebec... Electric Circuit, Flo stations and also at some extend Electrify Canada are a lot more reliable. I've also started using Chargepoint stations here that are being installed at different IGA (grocery store).

Your Swift Current issue. Reminded of a similar charging issue. I started charging on a cold Sunday morning. I chargers initial speed was about 5 kw. Then increased about 1 kw every minute. Until it warmed up. Only then giving full speed.

Love these videos! I had a quick question for you though about your driving conditions. We just bought a 2023 Kona Electric in August and plan to take it on a road trip from Edmonton to Ottawa next summer (we've done this trip yearly in our ICE vehicle for the last 4 years). My question is, what is your average coasting speed on these prairie highways? And have you been using much of the climate controls? I'm just wondering how you factor in speed and climate into your pre-trip calculations for consumption.
@READYSTEADYCHARGE
@READYSTEADYCHARGE Год назад
We used as much cruise control as we can while coasting on the #1 HW. The speed was kept around the speed limit (or possibly just above by no more than a few kph 😉). We also tried to take advantage of either the heated seats or the ventilated seats to reduce overall energy consumption.
@13Jbone
@13Jbone Год назад
@@READYSTEADYCHARGE thanks! That's what I figured, I just wanted to check! I know some EV channels mentioned taking the speed quite a bit under the limit to conserve energy (especially when running out of juice). Plus the last few weeks in Edmonton have been quite cold so I've seen how much climate can affect my consumption haha. Hopefully I won't need to much A/C on the road trip next summer!

I look forward to the subsequent video with the analysis. I have a 22 Kona and we did our first road trip in Sept/Oct in NS, NB, Quebec, and New England. On 100kw chargers I rarely got charging speeds in the 70s and then only briefly during each session... usually in the high 50s. Next road drip I'll log the OBDC data to see what the battery temps are. What app are you using for that?

In the US a 2019 Kona EV limited Fwd is listed at $28,000 with 26,000 miles. I’m just nervous about going electric. If you had the chance to buy this car again at that 28k or 30k. Would you buy the car again?

your elevations are in negative numbers (is this a delta instead?)...negative elevation means to me below sea level... also does elevation signficatively affect EVs performance? I am curious also, what's your plan B when the charging station is not working and not enough charge to get to the next one? Also, would like you to include pricing at each station for reference. Lastly, thanks for sharing your experience great trip though very plain landscape as expected for the Canadian praities
@READYSTEADYCHARGE
@READYSTEADYCHARGE Год назад
Good suggestion on including the pricing at each station! As for charging station backup plans, we left more battery buffers if there are no additional lv3 DCFC chargers other than our 1st choice chargers. There were almost always other slower backup 50KW or 25KW chargers along our route, and definitely, enough lv2 destination chargers to "rescue" ourselves. As for negative elevation, that's to indicate an elevation drop, instead of a positive elevation which denotes elevation gain.

Pretty lame that Petro-can charges by the minute but then you don't get full performance. Same issues with the one here in NS and it charges $0.50/minute. It feels like robbery! Not a big deal for me as my Harley only charges at about 22Kw Max but if I was in a Ford lightning and only getting 38Kw I would be very upset.

how do you plan long road trips with an electric car? Are there special apps for this?
@Demobot1

Yes. Usually each company has there own app. However there are apps like ChargeHub that act as a all in one app that will allow you to use multiple charging networks.

Is it possible that the problematic chargers were being throttled? Throwing this out there.
@cdbuiles
@cdbuiles Год назад
is one of my theories too.... since Petro canada has moved to charge by the minute and not by the amount of energy delivered... but you never know...
@READYSTEADYCHARGE
@READYSTEADYCHARGE Год назад
That's one of our theories related to the charging station themselves. It could be that a faulty sensor/component within the charger automatically puts the charger into a "safe mode" with reduced current output.
