I did work for a company that had five EVs in their fleet and offered free charging for any of their roughly 100 employees who owned or bought an EV. To make this incentive economically viable, they had to put a $2.4M solar array on their building's roof. 2.4 million bucks in solar panels and related equipment to service just over 100 EVs... Of course, the company had engineers work the numbers up and the whole thing was going to pay for itself within 20 years, after which point all the excess power they were selling back into the grid would be pure profit. The solar array quit working after 6 months and it took almost a quarter million in repair work to fix it... Provided it all stayed working and only degraded the 25% in production they predicted over that time, it would pay for itself in roughly 30 years. Then they had to pay someone to go up there and scrub road dust off the panels every summer and blow leaves off the roof after every autumn. That was a roughly twelve thousand dollar per annum contract. Last I heard, the bosses were worried it wouldn't pay for itself at all.

I wasn't alive back then but did governments subsidized gas stations construction and provided free gas for rich horseless car owners back in 1910?

In Alberta, they have a law that says they can not re-sell electricity, so we have all these free-charge docks in communities. Right now, a car is looking at a viability for a place to live because our government has invited millions into a country with no housing and no jobs.

Similar story here. Around 11 years ago I bought an Audi A4 Quattro. It’s great to drive and the best part is it doesn’t have all that modern tech, like lane assist, stop/start, etc., that annoys the shit of me whenever I hire a car when I’m interstate.

The type of EV I can probably afford is going to be a Golf Cart. Hang on take that back, just checked the prices of Golf Carts and forget it not a chance.

don't worry soon they'll have free gas stations where you can get up to 5 liters of gas per week

LOL depending on where you live. Most countries pay Billions for oil and gas subsidies. We pay 8 bucks to fill up our EV taking us a whopping 300 miles. No free charging here!

But why do the voters keep electing politicians who divert tax dollars to this nonsense? Instead of tax incentives to purchase EVs there should be a *surcharge* to fund these infrastructure projects.

Good morning John, We are currently using a Polestar 2 as a loan vehicle. Over the weekend I used an E.V. charging station (360EV) here in Brisbane. 55 kWh of charge, giving the Polestar 2 100%, took 6.5 hours and cost $17.35. It is so refreshing to hear you tell it like it is, especially with regards to low income earners of which I am one. It's a struggle. If Joe Somebody can afford to buy an E.V. then they can sure as heck pay for charging it. Kind regards

"That figure is considerably higher in metro areas." Isn't that 30% entirely within metro areas?

No doubt that these will be the most vandalised EV chargers in the country.

Think for a moment. Do you really want to start a fight over charging stations? Do you want someone to vandalize your car or a gas pump? The oil business is loving this, while getting massive subsidies from governments and still putting the price of fuel up. Yes, everyone can and should pay up for the use of highways, and no one should get a free ride. I could care less if you prefer a car with a gas or diesel motor - your choice. So why should you take issue with my plugging a car in overnight, or charging at a public station? If you want to get mad at someone, lose it with the oil companies making those rich people richer. They write off the expenses for their chauffeur driven limousines, private yachts and personal jets. The guy charging his Kia is just another working stiff like you. And his EV is barely any more expensive than your car - maybe less if it’s used. But it does cost less to charge in his garage and isn’t dependent on greedy oil companies.
