Pennsylvania is about to become a much easier place to travel in an electric vehicle. Join us for a late night tour of PA truck stops (much less sketchy than it sounds) to see why this stretch of I-80 will soon have public DC fast charging options every 30-50 miles.
We also stopped to take a look at what could be the second operational charging station funded by the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) initiative.
For reference on how this route has changed, take a look at our trip across the same route in a 2017 Chevy Bolt EV five years ago: • EV Road Trip: Crossing...

Hi Steve - I took my Bolt on a nearly 500 mile “day trip” into Ohio earlier this week with my daughter (no charging issues with 5 dispensers on this trip). Saw and posted a pic on PS of the London, Ohio chargers, which I saw you quickly picked up on. Didn’t charge there, but did stop in at the recently opened Pilot/Flying J that’s East of Toledo. I felt privileged to charge up under a canopy! They also had put out buckets for cleaning windshields, but the squeegees were at least 6 feet long (supplies for the semi truck guys/gals?)! Looks like I-80 across PA will be looking great for EV travels next summer! Cheers!

You seem to be behind much of the good stuff we talk about on the live stream, Dennis... thanks! I like that it shows when EV charging is considered a customer activity, as opposed to putting a pin in a map and moving on. It makes the user experience so much better, as you noticed. Thank you again for the report.

It's coming... slowly but surely, it's coming! I'm looking forward to checking out the PA sites that Tesla won awards for further south. Their bids came in significantly cheaper than most of the truck stops, which isn't a surprise, but I'm interested to see how they approach the NEVI requirements.

Great overview. I visited this area of PA in summer 2022 right before we got the Bolt EUV, so it was an ICE trip and charging infrastructure was academic at that point. These new sites are very welcome

Definite game changer for this route. We usually travel the northern route (NY Thruway) because of the cities and more ample charging, but I could see these sites evening it out. PA is a bit more scenic and these would make for a very convenient hop off/on trip, without the potential congestion that hits some NY sites near cities.

Terrific video, not only for the content, but the stylistic videography and editing too bring an entertaining whimsical flar. Love it all. Thx for the video. I am too getting ready to shove off on a similar trip, but in the SE. I will be on I-95 today and I-10 tomorrow. I agree with Brian, the 2 mile left moment was an edge of the seat moment. Glad it worked out. Phew!

Only getting colder and wetter up here, so it should set the scene for some more winter EVenturesbefore the year is out! Thanks for the support and kind words. It takes a little longer to figure out these editing points, but hopefully it makes every video a little better as I search for something new to add. Safe travels and speak soon!

Earlier this summer, I drove a section of the route shown in this video in a rented Tesla using the supercharger network. Of course, the superchargers were everywhere and they all worked flawlessly. Look forward to the day when all EVs are able to charge with a similar experience.

@@plugandplayEV I'm sorry you're going through that. I guess it's just the nature of things now. On another note, I can't wait to see your reaction the first time you spot a J-3400 plug in the wild at a NEVI-funded site. That will herald a new era of EV ownership in the US. You're doing a great job with your reporting.

I recently visited my first PFJ-EVgo-Ultium station and was pretty impressed! The store was large and clean inside, terrific bathrooms, and the chargers worked perfectly. It's a premium price over EA but it was a far superior experience and worth the $5 difference. Steve - I'm intrigued by the Emlenton and Onvo travel centers. The fact that they've got two brand new Chargepoint Express Plus chargers with additional chargers coming in soon, gets me jazzed for the future out there. Will the EVgo chargers just go alongside the Chargepoints in Emlenton, I wonder?
@plugandplayEV
@plugandplayEV 8 месяцев назад
It feels odd to say we've traveled hundreds of thousands of EV miles and never set foot in a truck/travel plaza until this past autumn, but there you are... the Walmart era of EV charging might be coming to an end! (Not that I'm not grateful for those sites...much better than an abandoned mall). My sense is that the Emlenton and Onvo sites had already been identified for Dieselgate funding at the state level, then the BIL passed and they overlapped with federal funding on the horizon. The pins have been on the map for a while and there's another Onvo site in Mt. Cobb that was also awarded PA state funding in 2021 but hasn't been built yet. I suspect Emlenton and Dorrance were further down the track, so they future-proofed and got them open, while the other is possibly waiting to get it all done in one project.

Have you noticed these sites to be busy? The non-Electrify America sites you have are actually bigger and more compelling than the non-EA sites we have here in California, even on major Interstates. The non-EA sites in California are rarely used outside of Bolts, LEAFs, and the occasional Kona/Nero, but I just chalked that up to the fact that they were slower. With PA getting such compelling public sites under other providers, it makes me wonder whether EV owners know how to find and use them.
@plugandplayEV
@plugandplayEV 8 месяцев назад
Not personally, but Plugshare suggests the Onvo and Emlenton Truck Stop are both quite well used by a variety of EVs. Another Ioniq 5 owner noted "many cars waiting" at the Onvo over Thanksgiving weekend and the range of models checking in over the past month is pretty broad. I think along this route at least, EV drivers probably know their options because there are so few to consider. The situation is a lot different up in New York (our preferred route + similar time/distance), where I'd bet a lot of people just default to EA because they have them every 50-75 miles already.
@michaellippmann4474
@michaellippmann4474 8 месяцев назад
Hey Eric...Merry Christmas! One of the reasons we defaulted to EA on the big majority of our 77 charges on our recent roadtrip is that we find that they usually are not busy....crazy I know according to a lot of reporting. We tended to shy away from single chargers or double units (usually lower power units) as there is a higher probability of a slowed charge session due to a car being there ahead of us. It matters not how fast a car can charge if the delivery is limited. So other than destination charging we tended to go with a higher probability of a faster charge on an open charger - EA has a minimum of 4 stalls. In all honesty if there were 4 or more 50kw Chargepoint units I would be happy to charge there as the Ioniq5 many times charges too quickly for us to have a relaxed lunch! I know...what a thing to complain about!!! Mike and Ally 🇨🇦

@@michaellippmann4474 Merry Christmas, Mike! I totally get prioritizing EA on trips; I even do that in my Bolt EV just due to the number of chargers per site. What I don't get is people who wait in line when there are other chargers nearby. Sometimes, the chargers are even in the same parking lot. With the new ChargePoint and EVgo sites, I can see people's priority changing though.
@michaellippmann4474
@michaellippmann4474 8 месяцев назад
@@newscoulomb3705 yes that is odd...and then they will complain about having to wait. On a trip to Florida - November 2022 in our Kona - we got evacuated (asked to leave our resort within 12 hours) and we headed inland. Got to Orlando and the EA site was busy with a number of cars in line and exactly what you are saying took place as on the other side of the Mall there was 2 unoccupied EV Go (I believe) chargers...only 50kw but with the Kona it was great. So we literally just drove past the 8 occupied stalls and charged there! We had a pretty good chuckle about that....but sure didn't think it was a thing at the time! :) Mike and Ally 🇨🇦
@ab-tf5fl
@ab-tf5fl 8 месяцев назад
@@newscoulomb3705 Driving elsewhere in search of an open charger isn't risk free. For instance, maybe you get there, find there's a line there also that's longer than where you were originally, but by the time you get back to the original place, somebody else has arrived and your place in line is lost. If the line is long, I agree, it's better to take the chance and look elsewhere. But, you think you're number 1 on the wait list and you think somebody is likely to leave within the next 5 minutes, it is often simpler and better to just wait.

Another great video. With 47k miles, are you still on the OEM tires? I've not had an EV yet that went that far on OEMs. Our 22 ID.4 (21K) OEMs will be due by summer and the Cross Climate 2's on my Model 3 have gone 35K so far with probably 50% of life left. My 12 Leaf has about 30-40K on Kelly Edge's with tons of life left too. For me, non OEM has fared much better in all categories except range loss. For me, the loss is negligible and charging is not an issue.
@plugandplayEV
@plugandplayEV 8 месяцев назад
Thanks! No, we changed out the OEMs around 40K miles. They were on their last legs, so it was probably more like 38-39K when we should have done them, just weren't close to home. Mostly travel miles for the Ioniq 5 as well, at least for the first 18 months, until the Bolt went back. We were quite hard on them initially.

How long do you have to sit at a gas station before you are ready to drive again? This entire experience looks miserable. What if there were 6 cars in line? Would you sit there for an hour or more just waiting, and then have to wait for charging, too? Hard pass. This would kill an impromptu vacation, a day trip to Disneyland, etc. You literally have to plan every single trip around your vehicle battery.
@plugandplayEV
@plugandplayEV 8 месяцев назад
15-20 minute stops and you don't sit around, you use the facilities like a normal driver. There's also the related point that you can go and do those activities (rest room, food, snack) while the charging happens, instead of standing there in the cold holding a fuel pump for five minutes and paying $50-$75 for the privilege. By all means buy and drive whatever you like (I'm not in favor of mandates, before that comes up), but understand that the arguments you present are ill-conceived and miss the entire topic of the video (convenient, fast charging coming every 30-40 miles of Interstate).

Lol...about 5 years ago my wife and where in Toledo in January, temperatures where about -5F wind chill seemed like minus 100..., I pulled into a packed Chevron station got out, put the nozzle in and the pump was just barely pumping, took near 15 minutes to fill the tank all the while holding the nozzle! Couldn't move to another pump because most of the pumps where acting up that day...... Haven't had that experience since I bought an electric vehicle a couple years ago, we drive a LOT and very rarely have a wait anywhere, longest wait we have had was about 20 minutes. When I would gas up at Costco a couple times a week a 10 - 20 minute wait was usually the norm. No thanks....hard pass for me...electric all the way baby! Merry Christmas! Mike and Ally 🇨🇦

My kid is 6. I don't have years to wait for a grid to emerge. We are living life now.. We like spontaneity and being able to just pick up and go whenever we like. I can't fathom spending 45 minutes, each way, at a gas station with a 6 yr old. I just don't see this as viable for my family, not the way we like to live. Not saying it isn't for others... just not for us.

I didn't miss the point if the video. You claim that I80 is adding charging stations. Why? Why make a video about that? Because yourr warrant is obvious: Claim: I80 is getting better for EV travel Data: look at this charging station and others like it Warrant: more charging stations make owning an EV better I was replying to your overall argument and its implications for me, the potential audience and target of your argument. I did not reject your claim, only argued that it isn't universal enough to apply to everyone, like me.

Thanks for watching :-) I need to look at the ownership of that Emlenton site, I think. The Plugshare listing says Pilot Travel Plaza but Google lists it as "Pilot Dealer" -- trucks seem to be fueling under a Pilot canopy but the cars, as the video shows, are using Shell pumps. So it's possibly not a fully-fledged Pilot plaza and therefore could have some other arrangements in place. Interesting that they saw fit to future-proof, either way. I think, possibly, that they secured state funding, realized federal funding was on the horizon, and rolled the dice on making the site ready to be NEVI-compliant by adding another couple of CCS handles.

Hey Steve excellent report/video...I look forward to traveling there. We have a trip planned into Northern Ontario after Christmas (hoping for some really cold crappy weather to test the Ioniq in) and then Florida in Feb. We're starting to see a bit more build activity in SW Ontario and also Michigan which has some major charging holes. The biggest plus I see in these new charging sites is how close they are to the major highways instead of a 5 mile trip off to find them. Glad to see that is a requirement of the NEVI funding. In any case have a great night and and excellent Christmas! Mike and Ally 🇨🇦
