I actually think the piano break really sets off her performance. Lenny Williams the pianist in the band had nothing prepared when Eva asked him to help her out with this right before the concert. When she nodded at him in the video he said he just started tinkling and what came out, to my ears, is a very fitting and lovely piano break that enhances the feeling of the song.

She was a generational talent and so very cruel to have lost her so young. Some others you might enjoy are Fields Of Gold, Stormy Monday, Tall Trees In Georgia, Time After Time, and there are many more. I can only imagine what works of artistic genius we have lost out on. There are very few things l wish l could go back in time for. But oh how l wish l could go back to Alexandria in the 90s and hear Eva Cassidy sing live. She was an absolute one of a kind. And l just can hardly imagine it. So lucky with have this and a few others.

I heard an interview with the pianist from this recording. He was asked how he came up with his delicate right-hand solo. He said that Eva devised chord progressions that he'd never heard of, and that he was trying to do the simplest thing possible... keep from screwing up her performance.

Truly a great singer, gone too soon. Eva Cassidy didn't want to be famous and turned down some record deals because they wanted to pick a single genre. She was made famous in the UK first when a large London radio station played her 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow". Great reaction.

According to Google: Jo Stafford (a pop vocalist) was the first to record 'Autumn Leaves and Edith Piaf sang the English and French versions on a radio program during Christmas Eve of 1950. However, the song didn't become a hit until pianist Roger Williams recorded it in 1955. ALSO: 'Autumn Leaves' is a popular song and jazz standard composed by Joseph Kosma in 1945 with original lyrics by Jacques Prevert. An instrumental version by pianist Roger Williams was a number one best-seller in the US Billboard charts of 1955. Eva did a beautiful rendition of it!

One take, live, and she had to pay for the recording, the album came out two years after she died. Eva didn't live out the year this was recorded and couldn't get a record contract.....life isn't fair. To hear her full range check out the high energy *Blues in the Night*

@@ModernLifeForThe70sMind She died of melanoma tho. Not her last performance. The last one was during some sort of memorial her loved ones organized for her, where she sang “What a wonderful word”. Gig wise: this video was recorded using all her savings and the footage from the first night was lost. The audio was kept tho.
