This seems like it started off as an Undertale fangame that quickly became its own entity. Good on these devs for the creative concept and gameplay, this looks really cool!
25:41 It's the little details. The developer animated the two... things gesturing when the pink gnome twirls across for the first time, and the gnome bows afterward. And when they get swooped away the blue thing looks suprised! The little details man!
Deity: You want immortality? Guy: Yes. Deity: Now as a wooden doll you will never age and nothing can kill you! Guy: *Gets put into incinerator* Deity: Oh shit, that wasn't supposed to happen.
@@XenobladeNerd immortality specifies that you won't die from age and (what it's usually used as) means you'll be young forever. It still means that you're vulnerable to dying from other natural causes It's two different things that gets mixed up a lot, though I can only assume this.
“Oh haha this is like Undertale but with a cute musical twist. It’s quirky but not anything too trippy though.” So I thought. Then the post death scenes happened.
@@ithinkiexist5227 I have never seen anything more viscerally intimidating than that mob all showing, being eerily still for a moment, and then fucking jumping as one to the music. The energy is far too powerful.
Pretty neat idea. Though I do hope there are less passive methods planned. I like how it looks visually and how attacks are based on the music, but the actual process of dodging and jumping seems to betray the rhythm design and makes it look more like just a fancy danmaku dodging shmup. I think other than dodging notes, maybe a parry system where you can time attacks with presses and holds so that it'd encourage active rhythm approaches even more on top of the dodging mechanics.
Yeah! They could make it like in Undertale (which the game has big similarities to) where the main idea is to dodge the attacks, but which is then -again - seperated into different versions of dodging. F.ex. in one fight, you have to jump at the right moment (aka you're bound to the ground), while in another fight you have to basically play a version of Invaders.
Okay, wait, let me rephrase my last statement: They INDEED seem to have done something similar! I went to their Steam page and looked at their trailer (which looks awesome btw), and apparently there will indeed be fights where you're allowed to fight! Like, they show this one fight against a gigantic...troll? And he has a health bar over his head and the protagonist has a sword that he swings, so I guess we'll see some variety.
one thing too I noticed is that with most rhythm focused games like guitar hero, the things you need to hit come to your spot WHEN the note it's tied to plays. In this however, they spawn to the song meaning what you're jumping over isnt following how the song currently sounds. Not sure if that's good or bad tho.
@@isaacargesmith8217 Now that you mention it, I guess it would be the best if they made it ...in the middle? Like, you should dodge, but the pattern isn't just all over the place - especially in these weird LSD fights - but in a form of beat (dunno if this the correct English word, sry). F.ex: Da - da -da (small break) dadada! And you'd need to move: Left, left right (small break) left-right-right
Some unknown force keeps compelling me to rewatch the drug gnomes and honestly I'm not sure I'll ever escape their gravitational pull. I'm trapped in gnome hell.
thanks for not putting Undertale in the title like any other youtuber would, I can already see matpat's title being like "THE NEXT UNDERTALE??" and not even mentioning the original game's title anywhere. The game itself I think is heavily inspired but different enough
@@ShardsOfIsaac nope, just after a day of posting this comment, I found out ABG is actually a well established website with articles written by several people, including Calum Fraser, who wrote the article that is on this video's description. They cover tons of indie games. I also used to think the channel was run by just one person, but it's not the case. The game was made by EverhoodDev, that's his name funnily enough. Check it out on itch, this demo is free. I wish they put a link in the description, but the video itself is good enough.
This game absolutely wears its undertale inspiration on its sleeve, to a point where I absolutely think that this project originally started as an undertale fangame. But it also very much has its own identity. Curious as to where the devs will end up taking this for a full release, because it absolutely has potential.
"whO's BeeN In MY medicInE?!" The Game. Seriously, the game is quite unique in style and tone. With some quality of life features and variation, this should do well.
At first this reminded me of Undertale, but this is a very original game that happens to wear its inspiration on its sleeve. I would recommend using a different font, though, because otherwise the "hehe undertale" might overshadow how interesting this actually is.
This looks incredible! The art is fantastic, the music is captivating, and the idea is a solid and fun one. I would hope that the soundtrack dips into different genres than just thumping electro beats (saw a little of that with the ATM being more chiptune) and they put in some thrash guitars or fiddle plucking since those would work well for this style too and make the really trippy parts stand out with a sudden harsh change in genre. Still, I really hope this gets a full version, it could be one of the greats with some spit and polish.
This game. Oh, Everhood... finally a demo I get to witness (hopefully) bloom into a beautiful masterpiece that gets the recognition it deserves. Yes, it has its Undertale (and possibly Yume Nikki) inspirations sprinkled here and there. On the other hand, I really do see this as almost nothing like Undertale or any game before it... I don’t know why I don’t see it all that much like the rest of y’all, I just don’t. It’s more surreal- on top of already being entertaining in its own way. Every song is a bopper and it’s a great concept for a fantasized, mysterious world. I am surely anticipating its official release this year with great excitement, no matter when that will be. Despite taking a strong liking to the Aztec-looking skeletal warrior(?) with a-dinosaur-head-for-an-arm dude, my favorite part so far was the two limbless, vibin’ lads that swooped in at 25:29 . They have such clever details put into them, especially the subtle hints to their personalities in how they emote. I really hope to see more expansion and/or a second encounter with these symbol-and-number-speaking guys... this is another thing I don’t have knowledge of- why I love them so much, ha! It may be how strangely cool they both are. ... It’s definitely how strangely cool they both are.
I know everyone else in the comments is relating it to Undertale, but it does give off some Undertale vibes while being its own thing. I mean, you can't tell me that ATM wasn't Flowey. It even made similar faces.
It’s pretty obvious there’s a lot of Undertale inspiration and similarities, like in the graphics style, text font, characters, and even a few things like the ATM’s face, but regardless, it’s so creative and unique that it’s basically it’s own entity. I love it.
@@pumpkizoid yeah!!! Idk why I like them so much, the designs are super neat, maybe the moves they do or the design of the faces (specially the grin and glasses of the purple one)
Oh my god, this game is gorgeous! You can definitely tell it has some Undertale inspirations, but this is so unique. The dance battles specifically! Yeah, some parts aren’t exactly original, but there’s something about the trippy soundtrack and atmosphere that Undertale never got close to. Yeah, Omega Flowey was something, but not NEARLY as trippy as this masterpiece! The demo looks amazing so far, and I would honestly consider buying this game. Let’s stop comparing this to stuff or complaining, just appreciate this demo so far. If you do have genuine complaints or helpful suggestions, contact the developer team! I’m sure they’ll listen to what you have to say, since they seem to be a small team.
I'm really, REALLY happy to see that this became a whole game. Such a unique, original concept and an intriguing storyline mixed into one. It's perfect.
I’m just started the video and after seeing the frog I’m just waiting for a heavy metal monster who just shreds it and spams a million wave attacks. Edit: This reminds me of crypt of the Necrodancer, the whole monsters and music concept that is.
So this game is basically Undertale meets Guitar Hero, with a few elements from various RPGs, at one very brief point possibly a really twisted cameo of the Tramp from Backwater Gospel, and then has a serious acid trip at some point. Yeah, I can see myself buying this when it's released.
It's a cool concept, kinda like a rythm based rpg, but when put into practice it falls apart. The attacks barely seem to have any indication on where and how they're going to happen, and the jumping and side stepping have no connection to the beat itself. I'd say that for this to work it'd have to take a sort of necrodancer style, where every move to the beat is rewarded or punished depending on the execution. Also, I think battles would greatly benefit from more pattern based moves, like Ziggy does at the beginning of his fight, where stepping with his left foot sends waves on his right, and swinging his arm send them on the left side of the grid
Liked the concept, and love the graphics! Story may want a little more, and exaggerations of animated movement would be nice. I kinda hope the people in bar are seen again.
Even with the full game out, that gnome battle is still one of my favorite parts. Speaking of which, I can tell a lot of these commenters are gonna love a certain secret boss.
The storyline as I know it: Ok, give up humanity. Check. Oh, I'm a wooden doll... and I lost my arm. Great. Oh, the fights are music-based survivors? I like it. Into the club we go! Ok, we meet the boss of the club... and we got burned. The lamp should set us down... and we're fighting gods. Wait where are we? HECK I FOUND THE DRUG GNOMES. ... WELL DUH, I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE YA TIE-DYE RIDDLE-TELLIN... Ok, now we're back. Oh, you were betrayed? Serves you right. Well, let's go get out bodies back.
I feel it's a...representation of the afterlife/limbo? Very confusing and way too complicated to play at just the beginning, but I feel it's supposed to be about "rebirth" (given that the "deity" reminded me of Buddah)
@@katziliaf Sorry if I came off wrong, i didn't mean to sound agressive. I just posted this to give people a good laugh, not an actual storyline... Sorry if I made you mad...
I love the gameplay... I can see myself playnig this in the following years and making weird ass remixes of the soundtrack like I did with undertale hahahahahaha Good luck in developing this game!
My only problem with this game is the visual inconsistencies, like the obstacles and lightning not being pixelated like everything else. Same with the ATM's 3d model, which looks good, but again inconsistent.
Honestly, I'm a bit confused about what actually happens when u "die" and the knome sequence kina gave me a headache, but other than that the game looks amazing! Keep up the great work!!
