This is from the best album Bruford (group) ever did. It was a huge influence on Rush during the early 80s. It's the first thing Bruford did after UK. I actually bought the 5.1 version and love it. Who wouldn't want to sound like Jaco?

I used to own a few Bill Bruford solo albums. Good fusion.

Alan Holdsworth was totally unique.... his playing was like no other, this was a great band, you're right about Berlin on bass sounding like Jaco, but then so many players of the time did.... great reaction/analysis Justin thanks.

This lineup doesn't get talked about as much as the classic 70's fusion groups, which is a shame. I agree, Jeff Berlin can be thought of as "just another Jaco clone" (although to be fair in the late 70's that was still a relatively new style), and Dave Stewart (Egg, Hatfield and the North, National Health) was never going to dethrone the likes of Chick Corea. But Bill and Allan Holdsworth brought a fresh and compelling sound to Bill's first solo albums (and the first UK album) that make them worth a listen. I also agree that Jeff Berlin can be polarizing. When Bill was part of the ABWH thing in the late 80's, Tony Levin was the original bassist. He had to drop out of the tour after the first few dates due to illness and Bill suggested Jeff as a replacement because he knew Jeff had the chops to step in at short notice and play a bunch of old Yes tunes. But you can't imagine two more dissimilar players than Jeff Berlin and Chris Squire. Plus JB was fairly dismissive of Chris Squire's playing in interviews, saying douche-y things like "Oh, yeah, I came in at the last second and saved the tour. But it was no big deal, because Yes music is super easy." I just wish he'd given just the smallest rat's ass about trying to *sound* like Chris Squire, since that's such a big part of that music.

well that's disappointing to hear about Jeff Berlin (is he always such a douche?), because I've loved the albums he's been on...I see he has a number of solo albums....any of them even close to Fish Out of Water ? Cause that album's fantastic ! I always trumpet Yes' solo albums (mainly the ones they all put out in '76) because IMO they're as good as the studio albums.

Given the simplicity of their music, I wonder that more artists aren’t out there doing the very same thing as far as breaking boundaries. As for Berlin, his flat, nasal and often blatantly off key vocals make the gradually going tornado cd unlistenable.
@EastmanD

@@gpg9516Ok so you don't like Berlin (I agree his voice is so-so) but there's a lot of great instrumental stuff on GGT. I'm not sure what you're getting at when using 'simplicity' and 'breaking boundaries' in the same sentence, that's confusing...sarcasm maybe ?

Yeah that was MY first reaction too ! Why bother even putting Jaco's name in the title of the video. Berlin is a total badass in his own right. But then again I haven't watched the video either so....😸

I have the Jeff Berlin album "Pump It". That one there may well be worth a listen for you, sir. He plays the song "Crossroads" and the guitar solo he plays on the bass. Years ago in Cleveland I listened to a classical station that had jazz hours to it. So I got Jeff, Jean Luc Ponty and some other stuff that's a bit off the beaten path. Not sure about all his personality issues though. Chris Squire was such a massive bass player, hard to believe anyone would diss him. So it's about like every drummer wants to be Bonzo? I'm like you on the drums. Bonzo and Neil Peart. Nope, can't do it. Although I've been told that I have it in me by another expert.
@sethcashman1011

I forgot about this, btw, but I very nearly formally requested that you check out a Berlin track called "Champion (of the World)" - which features double drumming by Neil Peart AND Steve Smith - purely for comic value. It is preposterous.

I listened in the car with loud heater running. I had a big phase of Holdsworth in the 90s, i.o.u. is a great album. I never got into very many fusion bands, was more into rock. I want to go back to fusion.

Circling back to Rush, I can't remember.... have you seen the Buddy Rich Big Band's performance of YYZ with Peart and Berlin? It is at once awesome and absurd (in a Maynard Ferguson kind of way). Instead of honoring Geddy's original bass breaks, Jeff totally improvises them, which I found to be in keeping with, well, Jeff Berlin. 😄The band sound fantastic, though.

Oh, and speaking of Jeff Berlin and Rush, there's a video out there on YT of Jeff Berlin conducting a clinic somewhere in the UK. At one point he asks each of the guys what kind of music inspires them and one of them makes the mistake of saying he's a Rush/Geddy Lee fan. You can just tell by his body language that JB is not a Rush fan. He makes the guy play something by Rush, but of course he's nervous and fumbles it and the pained expression on JB's face is priceless. JB then tries to encourage the guy to practice and work at it, but you can just tell he's itching to tell him to listen to more worthy musicians.
@JustinPanariello

yeah.... smh... idk lol. I haven't really dug into Jeff Berlin. He sounds pretty off putting which is unfortunate cause it also sounds like he can play. But if people don't like you, who cares if you can play lol, right?!

Being that I was a young adult when this music was created and that my career is that of a professional musician, I believe if you were exposed to a quantity of Jeff's playing and the way he accompanies the drummer in particular , you would find the similarity to Jaco to be substantially less than the difference. IMHO

Well if Jaco is your only reference for this style of finger style in fusion, I understand your view. But dive in to the world of bass playing from Jeff Berlin and you will find a unique and amazingly original voice ... "Jaco once said that Jeff Berlin is a much better musician / bass player than me" !!

Totally disagree! Jeff Berlin has his own thing going on and was arguably even more proficient on the bass than Jaco. He played fretted bass exclusively and had a completely different style to Jaco. Using your ears helps!
@Steve-mp7by
@Steve-mp7by Год назад
Jaco had a massive ego and his mental illness made it worse. When Jaco was on stage and saw Jeff walk in the club he would say in the mic "Charge that guy double he's here for a lesson!" I came late to one of his shows and he looked dead at me from the stage to see if I was somebody famous. I was only 16. It sucks because before he died Blue Note offered him a record deal and he made all these crazy demands and blew it. They were really trying to help him because they were a label who took care of their artists

Only the ignorant see Jeff as controversial. All he has ever said is that metronomes do not improve time and do not lend to musical progress. If you are under the illusion that a metronome somehow helped you improve it is only because you simply have not put enough of your time into reading and the study of musical content. Jeff's phrasing, sound & soloing is nothing like Jaco. Jeff's work with Patrick Moraz came out around the same time as Jaco's solo record. Also, Jeff was working in Europe and had no knowledge of the Jaco sound at this time.

I love this album. The bass is, by far, the least of it for me. The other three guys are giants, as far as I'm concerned. Holdsworth was a legitmate genius - a truly singular artist. It's very difficult to choose a favorite era of his playing. Possibly the New Lifetime years. I have a lot of thoughts about Jeff Berlin, the specifics of which I won't bother getting into here. They are very similar to my thoughts about someone like Esperanza Spalding. Sometimes the personality ruins the listening experience and it's hard to separate the two. As for Jeff's playing here, remember that Jaco's sound was relatively novel at the time. So many cats were jumping on the bandwagon at that point. Since you mentioned Metheny (another favorite of mine), I'll say that I'm 100% with him on the Jaco copycat issue, especially now, after decades of hearing countless impersonations. People should just move on from it and take the instrument somewhere new (which some actually have). I forgot that you said you listened to RTF - another group whose music I grew up on (I even studied with Lenny for a spell). Nice to hear you reacting to this.
