It's ironic how apt the title of this song is and how it applies to one Mr. Bill Bruford. He has quickly become my favorite drummer I have discovered on the channel... I am not gonna gush over him twice so just watch the video lol

IMHO this is Bill's finest solo album, a prog/fusion masterpiece. Do yourself a big favour Lee & react to the rest of the album. The opener "Hell's Bells" is brilliant, other favourites are Jeff Berlin's "5 G", Allan Holdsworth's "The Abington Chasp" & "The Sahara of snow" parts 1&2 (the 2nd part written by Eddie Jobson). Your observation of the work ethic required for this music is so true. IMO these great prog & fusion pieces are fine works of art that require hard work, imagination & dedication to produce. Bill was a master craftsman in everything he did, essentially a jazz drummer who became one of the important pioneers of prog, innovative, unique & as the title suggests definitely "One of a kind", cheers

This band, including a guest vocalist, is captured hot as a volcano in a concert video called Rock Goes To College. Well worth watching. Yeah, you can't go wrong on this album as well as it's predecessor. It never gets old watching your face as the surprises hit you. And I'm still eagerly awaiting seeing you react to The studio version of King Crimson's The Great Deceiver. THE single most mind-blowing track for me personally in his whole career. I staggered away from the stereo going "What is a song? What is a chorus? What is a bridge? Is THAT what Bill chooses to play against that bass line? Was THAT the guitar solo?" A ballet of ninjas changing scenes every few seconds awaits you.

I was just planning to post about that televised gig it's not a long one (around forty minutes) but worth its weight in gold. Superb musicianship and funky interplay across some very tight songs. It was one of their very first live gigs, at Oxford in March 1979, but they were clearly well rehearsed and it's a pure joy to watch. Here is the band with Annette Peacock, the cool guest singer, on "Back to the Beginning": ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u0_CFXWie2Q.html

Still one of my ten ‘deserted island’ discs…always. The album is brilliant start to finish. My original vinyl started looking gray from constant playing. Dr. Bruford remains my favorite drummer to this day. Look into ‘Either End of August’ or ‘Adios a la Pasada’ from Feels Good To Me. I love that you hold him in such high esteem. For a young listener your enthusiasm for music older than you are is refreshing and reassuring that us old folks knew good music when we heard it. Cheers.

Bill's heart was always in jazz, even before he joined Yes in 1968. You can look at his entire career as a trek towards pure jazz with various detours into prog to basically pay the bills. But -- as Bill himself says -- he's often found himself in groups that were too rock for jazz and too jazz for rock. There was actually a fair amount of this style of British fusion around in the late 70s. Besides Bill's band, later Soft Machine, National Health (Dave Stewart's other late 70's band), and Brand X are all worth checking out if you liked this.

I can't imagine this was no more than serendipity at work but in my UK Reaction comment I offered this as a suggestion. COOL. This was his 2nd Solo and each are great from A-Z. Bill continued slowly and gradually sliding more towards Jazz by the mid 80s yet always with quality, class and flair along with getting back with the revised 80's King Crimson. I saw this band as well as UK in the late 70s. Remember keysman Dave Steward, he's been an icon of the Canterbury Prog scene with KHAN (Steve Hillage), HATFIELD & THE NORTH & NATIONAL HEALTH. The latter were definitely in this vein but more intense if you want more like this! The well gets deeper, my friend! There's an endless buffet of forgotten treasures to be discovered.

This album has two pieces that were played by the original first line up of U.K. and those songs were The Sahara Of Snow and Forever Until Sunday. That one even has a violin part which on the Bruford album was apparently played (but not credited) by Allan Holdsworth. And yes: the 3 Bruford albums is indeed a prime example of 70s progfusion and for me the One Of A Kind album is still the benchmark towards I judge most progfusion albums. This is one of those rare perfect albums.

You know after the first Album of UK In the Dead of Night the Band turned a bit more direction Yes on the 2nd Danger Money. In that time Bruford and Alan Holdsworth did this more in the Jazz Fusion direction.

the Bruford albums are great. I also strongly recommend the two Moraz-Bruford albums. The first one is just pure jazz on acoustic piano and drums. The second album combines acoustic and electronic keyboards and drums. If you need a morale booster, joyous song nothing beats the title piece of the first album, « Children’s Concerto ». A fabulous song.

I had the distinct pleasure of seeing "Bruford" when they were touring his first solo release, "Feels Good To Me". Bruford was of course impeccable. Holdsworth had Zappa's respect as a guitarist for obvious reasons. Berlin was phenomenal. But for me the highlight was getting to see Dave Stewart on keys. He's an absolute legend of the Canterbury Scene. Do check out Hatfield and the North's first album, and of course National Health. Blessings.

5G is one of the best compositions ever. Please check it out. And another thing to be amazed by is that Bill wrote these pieces, with band involvement fore sure, but how many drummers write melodies? I guess there are many, but not like this. Also love Holdsworth’s impossible fluidity and very unique phrasing. He gets the guitar to sound like a saxophone without any preproduction effects.

I don't want to make this too much about Holdsworth rather than Bruford but I find it's a perfect combo. I'm a huge fan of early to mid Holdsworth but he started to repeat himself, and he played with drummers that I found tasteless. Bruford knew when to dial it back... he's amazingly aware of the balance. I wish AH and BB had done more. in a similar vein, you should check out Phil Collins's other band, Brand X, if you haven't already. kind of noodly fusion but some bright spots. btw, off this album, "Fainting In Coils" is awesome. it's all good.

Brufond is the bomb, he also "mostly" wrote all the tunes on this record. I love this tune, especially that middle section breakdown. It starts low and slow and builds up to a classic Bruford jam. Bruford's odd times are so subtle, the casual listener might not even know that there hearing some in 5 or alternating bars of 9 and 7. Have listen to Earthworks. I love Bill's work, but I just don't like jazz fusion much, I much prefer his non-fusion jazz stuff like with his Earthwork's band, check out Earthworks.
