Throughout the history of the Academy Awards, it has never really felt like the Academy itself gets animation. They acknowledge it, but it’s very hard not to feel like it’s seen as a second class citizen in the cinema world. This video might be framed as a ranking, but it’s really meant to take an in depth look at their nomination and award tendencies over the past 23 years, and determine if they take the category seriously, or if they’re mostly just tossing Oscars to the most recognizable studios. But it’s also about taking a look at ALL 99 FILMS ever nominated for this award, and hopefully shedding some light on the lesser appreciated nominees.
Thanks to my guests!

Here are some really interesting statistics from a section I had to cut out of the video because this was a behemoth! Pixar has the most wins with 11, AND the most nominations with 18, meaning they win 61% of the time they’re nominated, and 47% of the time total Only SEVEN films that Pixar has submitted for the award have NOT been nominated, meaning they have a 72% nomination rate They have an 18% share of the TOTAL nominations in the history, nearly 1/5th If you loop Walt Disney Animation studios in with Pixar as they’re both owned by Disney: The have 31/99 nominations, giving them about 31% of the total nominations They’ve won 15/23 of the awards, meaning they win 65% of the time Laika has submitted 6 films and been nominated 6 times for a 100% nomination rate However, they’ve never won, giving them a 0% win rate, oof Of all 99 nominees 54 are CG animated 28 are 2D animated 17 are Stop Motion animated CG animated films have won 19/23 years for about an 82% win rate 2D animated films have won 2/23 years for about an 8.5% win rate Stop Motion animated films have won 2/23 years for about an 8.5% win rate Pete Docter has the most wins with 3 and is tied with Hayao Miyazaki for the most nominations with 4 Pete Doctor wins 75% of the time he is nominated Shrek is the franchise with the most nominations with 4, if you include the Puss in Boots spin offs Toy Story is the franchise with the most wins with 2, still the only sequels to ever win the award

Also it’s worth mentioning ever since the BAFTA introduction in 2006/2007 when they were announcing the nominations for best animated feature for the 2006 animated films, 15 of the 18 Animated films that won the BAFTA (except LEGO Movie, Kubo, and Klaus) wound up winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and are 80-90% accurate compared to the Golden Globes and the Annie’s (post-2006/2007). On top of that in the last two to three years, four Animated Films that have won the Golden Globe and BAFTA wound up winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature: _Soul, Encanto, Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio,_ and _The Boy and the Heron_
@EChacon
@EChacon 3 месяца назад
Secondly outside the _Toy Story_ franchise which won Best Animated Feature through Toy Story 3-4, their hasn’t been *ANY* animated sequel that has won the Oscar. _Shrek, The Incredibles_ and _Into the Spider-Verse_ won the Oscar, yet their sequels (Shrek 2, Incredibles 2 and Across the Spider-Verse) didn’t go on to win the Oscar with the _Incredibles 2_ losing to _Into the Spider-Verse_ and now _Across the Spider-Verse_ losing to _The Boy and the Heron._
@EChacon
@EChacon 3 месяца назад
Finally while 12 adult animated films were nominated, nine of them - _The Triplets of Belleville, Persepolis, The Wind Rises, My Life as a Courgette, The Breadwinner, Loving Vincent, Isle of Dogs, Flee_ and _The Boy and the Heron_ were each rated PG-13, _Anomalisa_ is the only R-rated animated film to be nominated in this category, and _Chico and Rita_ and _I Lost My Body_ were not rated by the MPA, _The Boy and the Heron_ is currently the first and as of now the first Adult animated and first PG-13 animated film to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Horses are infamously difficult to draw. James Baxter, the backbone of Spirit, is an industry legend because of his incredible ability to draw horses. Animators look for any excuse not to draw horses if they can. People have refused work because of them. The fact they got enough willing people to make a 2D horse film and it looks that good is insane.

And he is still a legend, the work for that kind of highly detailed absurdly profecient 2D animation is rare in the western market these days, but you know when a production has the desire and a little budget for a scene with that stuff, that Baxter will be available. A pretty goode example would probably be the scene from the final episode of Steven Universe of Steven reunifying with his gem half. All done by James Baxter.

I think Shrek doesnt realize or accept how lonely he really is until Donkey comes along and openly accepts him. He's been rejected by everyone in society his whole life so he's basically embraced that image. He becomes scary and mean because that's how people thought of him. Over time you become comfortable in your own space and you accept that you're unloveable by the rest of the world. But when someone actually decides to be nice to you it throws you for a loop because you believed for so long that you were incapable of being liked or loved, but now youre being reminded of all the hate you've endured this whole time and realizing that it didnt HAVE to be that way. I'm having a hard time coming up with similar examples in fiction at the moment but if i come up with some I'll update this comment. Just my thoughts

I remember the sadness when I found out The Princess and the Frog was gonna be Disney's last 2D animated movie. Well I think the thesis of Shrek is more "life is more complicated than Disney fairytales, but true love still exists." Like it is critical of the absurd extent of fairy tale romanization, but it still holds true to some of its core themes. Hence why Shrek dismisses the idea of true love at the beginning of the film, yet finds it at the end. He didn't believe it was possible for himself, but was later proven wrong, hence the song choice “I’m a Believer” and the lyrics “[I thought love was] meant for someone else but not for me.” Also Sid could know that a rhino's brain is small, I don’t see how that’s a stretch. I'm sure animals had their heads cracked open on occasion during the Ice Age, and it would make sense if they had simple biological knowledge like that, especially in a world where animals talk.

@signodeinterrogacion8361 3 месяца назад
It was quite a cute detail, but I think I prefer how they do it nowadays honestly. The fact that we get to see the faces of those who created the movies just as we do with live action directors really helps raise public awareness for animation as a valid artistic medium. It's the difference between treating animated movies as quirky products created by an anonymous team (a view Disney very heavily pushed last century as a way of maintaining it's monopoly on animation, by the way) and regarding them as pieces of art created by people with unique talents and visions. Also I think those animations just wouldn't work well nowadays given that adult and other non comedic films frequently get nominated for the category. How could anyone ever make silly award ceremony skits about characters from movies like Persepolis, Anomalisa or Flee?
@drdewott9154
@drdewott9154 2 месяца назад
@@signodeinterrogacion8361 I think a middle ground could be established, of course depending on the movie maker's own desire, but to have representation in animated form for the animated productions would be great to see more again.
@signodeinterrogacion8361
@signodeinterrogacion8361 2 месяца назад
@@drdewott9154 I don't believe the creators themselves are the ones that can decide that, it's usually their corporate overloads that are in charge of this kind of 'marketing stunts'. And anyway having a different format for each movie that is in the running would be kind of awkward. Even if none of these adult movies ever win the entire segment would just feel off if it only applied to some movies, only half way for others and none at all for a few of them. But I get your point.

I'd say Megamind absolutely deserved a nomination in 2010, it was fantastic. Definitely my most rewatched nomination in that year. Also, my favorite winner might just be Rango. As incredible as Boy and the Heron and Spirited Away are, Rango is unbelievably next level for animation, especially for CG. It's a straight up western. Thank you for introducing me to Anomalisa and Persepolis though. I think the latter after I watch it may become a new all time favorite.

The plot/premise of Mirai would have made more sense if the title were better translated to english (which seems to be a common issue with Japanese animated films). In Japanese, the title is "Mirai no mirai", where Mirai (ミライ) is the character's name and mirai (未来) is a word in Japanese that means "future", so the title literally translates to "Mirai's future", which explains what happens in the movie a lot more.

In defense of Spirit, I think the horses expressing themselves is like. Kind of essential to telling the story? You want animated horses to just stand around and look like normal ass horses? The great thing about animation is that you CAN pull the expressions a bit and tell a story that wouldn't be told with any other medium. That's the entire point of it being animation. Sorry, not to be harsh but I think that was a very silly criticism. Do agree the narration is stupid tho.

In fact, only eight of the animated films not from Pixar and Disney have won Oscars: 1. Shrek (DreamWorks) 2. Spirited Away (Studio Ghibli) 3. Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the WereRabbit (DreamWorks/Aardman) 4. Happy Feet (Warner Bros.) 5. Rango (Paramount Pictures) 6. Into the Spider-Verse (Sony Picture Animation) 7.
