dude. i have realized even many dividend stocks are ponzi assets.. like at& t. pays dividend while dumping shares in the market.. and so many are such low dividend.. maybe a few select covered call etfs like the canadian bank covered call etfs where they do not dump more shares in to the market.. i suggest moving towards annuities, term and life, bond etfs, reit etfs, and even simple high interest cash funds like CASH or CSAV on the toronto stock exchange.. the book "the ponzi factor" made me realize just because it pays a dividend doesn't mean its legit.. look at the security a annuity offers.. set rate, no risking your principle..

I know some people have issues with Jim Cramer, but one of the catch phrases he has that jives with all this is we don't do buy and hold, we do buy and homework. Periodic rebalancing helps with some of the points you talk about. i find this challenging because there is also merit in letting your winners run.

jake i have a question that i couldn't find an answer for, when you invest in a dividend stock and you receive a dividend then you reinvest the dividend in that stock and lets say for any reason you decided to sell the stock, Are you actually being taxed double? once when you received a dividend and then on that dividend after reinvesting it? like taxed twice the amount?

Great video! I have many of those losers you mentioned in my portfolio. Hence this video is more or less a summary of positions I've already thought about selling out of. ;-) In the last 2 years, I've more and more shifted towards ETF investing, I'm sick of the volatility and unpredictability that come along with individual stocks. And approaching early retirement I'm no longer up for experiments. And with regards to Buffett selling out of the airline stocks: the most remarkable thing here was that he sold out of them at the worst possible time. He sold out at the absolute trough of the prices. This was a huge lesson, in the sense that even these big investors are making horrendous mistakes every now and then.

Great video and it makes me ponder. I own single stocks and I spend a fair amount of time watching the facts. I considered etf or funds but once I at look what is in the basket then I see single stocks and that’s what I have. I don’t trust a firm to choose my basket. I am doing really well overall. I have had some difficulties so nothing is perfect. I dont see ETF’s or funds to be what I need.
@DividendGrowthInvesting
@DividendGrowthInvesting Месяц назад
That’s fair. It’s important to understand the difference between active and passive funds. In passive funds, you’re investing in the rules of the ETF. With active you’re investing in the fund manager.

Great video Jake! One more thing to add, is not getting emotionally attached to individual stocks. The stock environment, your goals, and time horizon will truthfully fluctuate throughout your investing career (which is what makes investing so damn difficult and hard). I owned MCD, PEP, and JNJ but recently sold them because I didn’t want to keep up with them and they didn’t match my investing goals. I owned DG and SBUX but sold them because DG treated their employers terribly, and in todays time who can afford a $6 sugar milk drink. Be okay with change in your portfolio, it’s okay!

Its easy to have survival bias when looking at the stocks that performed well in the past. Don't get me wrong.. I wish I bought KO or PEP etc back in the early 90s as well. The world would have to look very different for there be no need for railroads in the future. I don't think we will see that in our lifetime.. but the thing is, we just can never know. Also something to consider, is that railroads could still be here, but perhaps the management at the company decide to no longer grow the dividend, or they have a lawsuit and are forced to cut their dividend... the point is you cant know.

Disagree with your thoughts on buy and hold. Nothing is guaranteed in investing. Whether you buy Market Funds or Individual Stocks, there’s always risk. The examples you gave may increase dividends when market conditions improve. People react to current events and assume things will not get back to normal. That’s the time to buy when there is a pullback. I’d be concerned if they don’t. Cut the dividends. That shows they don’t know what they are doing. There are companies who cut the dividends and then when they recovered they were strong as ever.

You don't have to agree. Check out the article I reviewed. Go to Rule #4 and review what happens when a company cuts its dividend. You may change your mind after you review that. www.suredividend.com/8-rules-dividend-investing/
