I cannot remember if it was 101 Dalmatians or 102, but I remember reading somewhere that she made sure her contract let her keep any of her costumes in the film. As someone who can be more forgiving of a weak film with gorgeous costuming, I always thought that was ingenious of her and her team.

In my personal opinion, Cinderella is the best remake that Disney has made thus far. It managed to create it's own story and style, a film that stood on its own without relying heavily on nostalgia, and gave new depth to familiar characters especially the prince. If Jane Austen was a filmmaker, Cinderella remake is exactly how i'd imagine if she wrote and directed it. Everyone was absolutely brilliant in their roles and it's probably the only Disney remake that i can rewatch over and over again

"Cinderella" will always be my favorite of the live action adaptations. Not only is it a great tribute to the original movie's concept artist, Mary Blair, and her iconic pastel art style, but it also makes the story feels so much more refreshing and full than its animated predecessor. Plus, Lily James (now next to Halle's Ariel) is easily the best cast of the Disney princess' and I'm glad her beautiful singing voice gets some moments featured as well.

Mulan is one of those things where Disney tried to appease multiple audiences and ended up pleasing no one. The criticism out of China for the original was that Mulan is supposed to be a larger than life super hero. "Brains over brawn" was not appreciated by those audiences. So Disney tried to return her supernatural aspect in the remake. I'd say they tried to have character growth for her still in having her overcome a mental hurdle to allow herself to use her abilities. This is represented by the contrast with the witch character Xianniang. But I think this didn't end up appreciated as much by western audiences. And in the end, the film still wasn't authentic enough for Chinese audiences so it wasn't received well in China.

"Puppies" (101 Dalmatians) as my daughter called it, was a mainstay in our house for about 2 years when she was 3-4 years old. Every night near bedtime she'd run into my dad's room and request Puppies and they'd watch it wherever it left off from the last viewing for a good 15-20 min. The 2003 universal pictures Peter Pan was a great adaptation. Kinda sad that other studios are better at adapting 'disney characters' than disney. I think it comes from the fact that P.J Hogan really liked and respected the source material and wanted to adapt that story on the big screen. He didn't make the movie to change the story or "improve" it with modern subplots and influences.

Great list. I think one thing that sets "The Jungle Book" apart as an adaptation, which is something I teach a class on (written word to film adaptations) is that it has its own theme. The use of the elephants as mythological beings that carve the rivers of the Earth and the idea of leaving your mark on the world is so well done. While I do like the "Cinderella" adaptation, I still think "Ever After" is a better Cinderella story. As much as I like Cate Blanchett in this role, she is not as villainous as the original nor as good as Angelica Houston in the role in "Ever After" For me, I do like "The Little Mermaid" but the original for me is one of my favorite films of all time because of the wonder of the sea in it and I do not think the new film reaches that height just as "The Lion King" does not either. But again, great list!

How to shake an earworm: pick any catchy tune **with no lyrics** and hum that instead until that is the tune you default to. Earworms work like that because you don't know the lyrics well, and your brain treats it like an unfinished task. I use the theme tune to the 1970's Battlestar Galactica. It always works.

I was shocked Cinderella didn't win, it's such a solid movie. It refreshingly bypasses the cynicism of many modern movies to bring a sweet, genuine story. But I haven't seen the Jungle Book, so I'll have to check it out

Looking back the only films I have actually liked were Cinderella and Petes Dragon. Petes Dragon effected me deeply when I watched it thinking it would be a throwaway nothing of a film. Such a great underrated film.

Finally, someone who despised Disney's Pinocchio remake and Tom Hank's abysmal performance in it as much as I did 😅

I’ve never seen the re-makes of your #1 and 2 picks. Think I need to change that now, thanks Dan!

Christopher Walken as King Louie is the best and most inspired casting of all these films.

I personally just rank these films for myself on overall enjoyment and not whether or not they are better than the original. My favorite by a pretty sizable margin is the Live Action Aladdin. I personally loved how they gave Jasmine a fully fleshed out arc, I loved Aladdin and the Genie's chemistry, the Prince Ali segment stands toe-to-toe with the original, and I genuinely teared up at the acting during the scene where Aladdin frees Genie. Mena Massoud doesn't make a spectacle of the moment, Will Smith's disbelief and near speechlessness feel earned, and I genuinely believed in that moment that these two are best friends. Nothing is going to top the original Aladdin in my book, but darn it if Aladdin (2019) isn't one of my favorite Live Action films Disney has released in the last decade.

" At a construction site like some mid 90s Jean Claude Van Damme film" 😂😂 Now I realise why I found the end fight underwhelming.

Maleficent and Petes Dragon are really borderline like you said as far as " remakes" but hey I can see the debate

I had so much hope for Disney remakes when I saw The Jungle Book. Gosh I wish I was that naive
