Hey Tech Bros! We're disrupting the startup ecosystem! Come join us on our office tour - we have an open floor plan - which is great for collaboration. Check out our disruptive supercut of Google wannabe companies. We also have a game room and beer on tap!

I have and always do try to talk my younger engineers from falling for the "startup" horseshit. I remember years ago, a young engineer from our team left to work for Living Social on the east coast. He was all about "free salad" and other startup horseshit. He called once to check in with us one evening. Mind you, he was several hours ahead of us on the east coast. So a bunch of us happened to be hanging out when he called and right out of the gate he seems super proud of the fact and says "I'm just drinking a beer ....at work!". To which I reply...."We're drinking beer...at a bar.", in a very sardonic tone. Point being....yeah..they want your sould 24/7 and try to buy you off with nonsense like office scooters and free lunch.

The startup "scene" wastes so much money on one-upping each other on office "coolness" and not much of it actually improves employee health, happiness, or performance. In fact, the overkill inclusions like game rooms, nap rooms, showers, and beer aren't even intended to keep you happy. They're deseigned to keep you at work. Like, to keep you physically inside the building. They don't want you to leave. They try to take away all your excuses to leave so they can have you working 70 hours a week. Then they make these office tour videos to make their lackeys feel like they're supposed to smile about it and say out loud that they love working there.

I would not say the Startup Scene as this is not true for instance on Startup in the Medtech or Agriculture space. Reality is everyone tries to get a SAAS of the ground because they, in theory, can be scaled hugely. in reality most of the stuff ist not needed, but things like cancer early screening are, but much much more difficult to achieve

Nap rooms and beer taps in an office? I don't think so. Now, they're kicking themselves for spending so much on their office layout, as most people are working from home (until the end of the year, in some places).

Not one mention of sales, productivity, or customers. Oh, and about being disruptive? Those open office plans are so disruptive that employees put on headphones to block out their co-workers. How's that for being collaborative?

Hilarious. The most pathetic was the woman who seemed excited about being "steps away from a starbucks". But the disruptive bros are pretty bad too. They've probably never made anything in their lives.

My goal is to start a business that will never be referred to as a startup and which instead of being innovative and disruptive, will offer quality products for very fair prices. Employees will not work in an open floor plan office or any office at all. The losses associated with the complete lack of collaboration (due to not having an open floor plan office) will be offset by the gains of completely eliminating all distractions created by noisy coworkers. The cost savings of not needing to pay rent on a cool space in a hip neighbourhood and not needing to pay employees enough to cover their commuting costs and justify the impact on their quality of life created by commuting 2 hours every day to and from a cool space in a hip neighbourhood (or the costs of paying to living in a hip neighbourhood), and the savings of not buying arcade games, foosball tables, ping pong tables, pool tables, shuffle board tables, VR equipment and trendy furniture, not needing to pay the water bill for showers, and not offering beer on tap, meals and free coffee will allow the business to sell quality products at very fair prices. Anyone who refers to other employees as "family" will be immediately fired. Employees will be incentivized to work no more than 32 hours a week (to ensure that they contribute their best possible work every day and never suffer from burn out) and will be paid for working 40 hours a week.

They only good strategy is standing meeting, it works in my experience too to reduce meeting time. The rest is a sort of mask to hide how little most people are payed, how little they have a democratic say, and how much they hate the open office layouts (People calling while you are next to them is realy annoying, forces my to put on headphones to even semi conentrate) It is like how more PR bullshit they have in there videos, how more exploative aspects they have to hide stemming from corparate hierachy.
