I have that same G-shock as a beater. One thing I love about it, is that it’s a true ‘set it and forget it’-piece. Multiband 6 means it’ll always be the most accurate watch you own, the solar means you can never forget to change the batteries. It’s a G-shock, so you’ll stop functioning before it does. And it seems to be a real ‘if you know, you know’-watch among collectors I’ve come across in the wild. Almost everyone respects it.

Totally agree! My daily beater is my Tissot PRX automatic with the green dial. I love it!!! I as well have anxiety wearing my nicer pieces out. Ironically, beater watches some times can be more enjoyable than nicer pieces for this very reason! Cheers

Amen. Vostok is my “beater” brand of choice. While I have Vostok Amphibias in my collection that I treat as prized grail watches, my Scuba Dude is my go to “beater” because it can take anything life throws at it.

Fed - GREAT episode! I too have the G-Shock 5610 along with multiple Casioaks- some with the full metal mod-kits, some factory original, in addition to my nicer watches- but what really surprised me was how much I LOVE my G-Shock 5610. I thought it’s a quartz watch without the “soul” that mechanical watches possess, but the 5610 has 3 features which I feel like give it a “soul” 1) the multi-band 6 allows me manually pull the atomic clock update if the auto-update wasn’t successful - but I use it to set all my nice mechanical watches 2) the solar power reserve indicator is awesome & makes it feel like it’s “living” - sometimes I put it out in the sun for a top up 3) the automatic backlight when you turn your wrist in the dark is great (a bit like the feature on older iPhone watches) - in short, I find myself wearing it a lot more than I thought I would & it’s one of my favorite pieces! Now I’m trying to resist buying one of the full titanium versions! Enjoy your G-Shock!

My Citizen Skyhawk was my beater. I wore it very hard in the Army & on multiple deployments. Eco-drive solar - never replaced a battery. When it finally died, I thanked it for its service & moved on. It was one of my all time faves.

I am more in the lots of inexpensive watches. When I was a working nurse practitioner, I saved for nicer watches. After brain surgery and a post-op stroke, that is no longer an option. A Lum-Tec diver is about my limit for what I can save up for on social security. Now, my Omega SMP needs to be held for a lifetime, as I could never replace it. My point is…. Situations change. As always, I appreciate hearing your views and shared wisdom!

I’ve had that watch itch the past 6-8 months, watching vids like mad and almost bought a Speedy, then decided I wanted an El Primero…but took a step back and treated myself to my first beater watches…purchased an all black Nighthawk for $200 and a cool Bulova Surfboard chrono for a few hundred…I’ve got to say they’ve been fun to wear and giving the Rolex I wore everywhere a rest has been good too…

One of your best reviews. I am about 4 years into my collecting and totally agree with your statement about moving away from the 10 x $500 watches and aiming for your 'grail watch' or the next level of watch in your collection. I am at that point now. I am trying to look at the next phase in my collecting with watches such as Sinn, Doxa, Bremont, Longines, Hamilton, Tudor etc etc. Its hard not to buy a watch every second month, but if I want to get to the next level that's what I have to do. I want my collection to be a relatively small number of watches that I am really proud of, rather than 100 watches which are different colourways of the same watch. Everyone is different, but that's just me.

I love beater watches. I have a Casioak and a Citizen EcoDrive (no idea what model it is, but looks a bit like a Daytona). Both are solar and the time auto-updates, so i never have to think about setting them. Perfect for throwing on in a hurry, or just knocking about in. Both are great, and they help me enjoy my "good" watches even more. I also have a Christopher Ward C63 GMT, which is a step above being a pure beater, but acts like a halfway house. I don't want to damage it, but it's not the end of the world if it gets a bit banged up. Great for casual wear.

Welcome home & happy new year Fed! Looks like you got some sun in Spain, but wore a hat the whole time! If you define a beater watch as a watch you don't care about if it gets scratched or dented then go with a Timex or a Swatch. Basically throw away watches at ultra cheap prices. You could also include most of the watches bought at a Macy's watch counter. I define a beater watch as a watch you wear every day, suits your style, and is fun to wear for most every occasion. In short, you just enjoy wearing the watch because it matches your personality and is affordable! Watch wearing is meant to be a fun hobby-- just do it!

Totally agree , almost 10 yrs prior I picked up the reverso duodate , the reverso being my all time crush when it comes to watches and I wore it to death 😅😝 coz I so so enjoyed it but looking back it cost me heftily in servicing and repairs over the years 😅. But these days I keep my average daily on a old tank must mechanical , Gshock 5600 & a SINN 356 and trust me I’ve banged them up quite the bit and surprisingly it didn’t hurt as bad kinda like I literally smacked up my 356 till the point I cracked the double domed acrylic and even sending it back to sinn only cost me below $600 for a total fix up coming back as good as brand new 👌 so def agree , find something you love and wear it happily without having to worry or feel as bad 😝 so totally agree with you Fed .
