Wow. Thanks for sharing this. But you are absolutely right. I shoot RU-vid with my smartphone and was going to buy DSLR camera and some lenses etc but after watching someone else's video who said exactly the same thing as you. Gear does matter, you have to compete against 2021 RU-vidrs. It helps with the watch-time and the quality feel for the content. People don't like to watch videos on 480p for longer than 3 minutes. Yes, you don't have to buy over-expensice stuff like a camera €200.000 in movies, lighting, green screen etc. But, you need a good camera quality that is sharp, to make watchable content. Because you have to compete against RU-vidrs with millions of subs. I recommend people to use a €500+ camera, €300 is also okay but you need very much skill, if you learn many techniques with it, you can make €5.000 set-up quality look-alike content.

Not at all true. If you buy too much of 1 thing you get into a headspace of abundance delerium i.e "ive got 5 cameras it doesnt matter which 1 i use" whereas if you have 1 of the things that matter, that 1 thing you own is your go-to for the task. What I mean is "minimalize" your stuff, not minimalism but keeping the basics as your go-to, when you upgrade, dont keep the old stuff, then you will care more about your gear

It's been dubbed one of the best phones you can buy for the price (or at least that's until everyone started buying one and made the price go up). I can confirm. My audio recording setup (Not including my laptop) is around $130-150 and I'm happy with what I can do with it, even if I have no clue what I'm doing half the time lol. It's amazing how accessible decent recording is nowadays.

You've probably gotten some gear already but I'll go ahead and list off the setup that's very similar to mine. Mackie e91c (Comes with shock mount and XLR cord) $59.99 A 5/8 to 3/8 stand adapter (You can get one for $5.95 on Sweetwater's website) Behringer U-Phoria um2 interface- $45 on Sweetwater Zaxsounds 6 in. Pop filter on Amazon- $5.99 And a Pyle Foldable mic stand on Amazon- 17.99 Total before taxes: $134.92 As far as samples go, I have a couple song covers and voice over clips I've used with a similar setup on my channel, so I believe this setup should be quite good for singing and VO work, especially for just starting out.

Probably the most honest RU-vidr on the subject is Matti Haapoja. His take is "gear doesn't matter, and gear matters". Basically, all the gear in the world won't make you a good filmmaker or videographer, but decent gear does help as long as you have a good story to tell. I think that is a refreshingly honest take on it.

I’ve been a student in film school for two years. My teacher is amazing and has worked on some of the biggest films in Hollywood for over 40 years. However, the school does not provide a big budget in film gear to the class, however, many of his students become very successful filmmakers because of the amazing skills they learned from the teacher. It goes to show that good knowledge can outweigh expensive gear.
