I had a friend who bought a new phone every 3 months. I didn't believe him until he showed me his so-called "phone pit". He just drops his phone constantly, he refuses to buy a screen protector and a case and when his screen is too cracked to see or the phone dies, he just buys a new one... If he didn't spend all his money on phones, he would be rich af.
@@Kangiru_Noah"Like any other screen" I don'f see anybother screens that ever had a history of just *breaking* in the history of LCDs or oLEDs. Viewing angles? Sure, still an issue today if you buy cheap TN. Burn in? Sure, manufacturers have only been able to do so much to minimize burn in on oLEDs. Power usage? Look at old CRTs and CFL-backlit LCD. Outright breaking from regular wear? Exclusive to foldable oLED, and the only one of these issues that makes the display completely unusable. If the history of issues with displays shows anything at all, it shows that foldables will always be a high wear niche, constantly breaking. Manufacturers will refine them best they can, sure, but they will only be able to lengthen the wear period before it breaks, not eliminate it. So the Z Fold, Z Flip, Moto Razr, and whatever else there is in the foldables space right now are, and always will be, luxury clout items even if the prices go down; even if the prices drop to around $500, they break so often that any regular user will find preference in a traditional slab of glass for convenience, cost, and longevity. Maybe we'll see a foldable display in the future based on MicroLEDs, where the bend point isn't actually a bend point, but more like a line of couple pixel wide MicroLED prints that are microscopically close together and held in place by whatever the front "glass" is.
I'm not exactly loaded but my Z Flip 4 that I got for $400 a while back has been working fine. This phone isn't meant for people who abuse their stuff or work jobs that require durable materials. This is more of an office job kind of phone. If you work construction, it's going to die.
@@Gojira_Wins Oh yeah but I meant this comment for Austin specifically lol us non loaded folks are very careful with our stuff because we know we can't just keep buying new phones all the time :P
I'm still using my five year old iPhone XR, this phone is like a tank. Still running like a champ and i work this thing out like crazy. I have no reason to upgrade my phone, like yourself.
I agree i usually buy in 3-4 year cycles and got flip 4 last year now and not sure this thing will last another year but i do love it but wish it was more durable tbh.
As someone that only upgrades every 3-5 years, I need guys like Austin to keep buying phones like these until the product matures enough to last me 3-5 years. I’m currently in my upgrade year and I want to buy one of these so bad but the durability is a huge issue for me.
Someone i know had one but after a while when it flipped it turned off, they got a replacement, but the battery life isn’t that good That is a Z flip 3 that i’m talking about btw *Read More…*
From what I know I suggest getting z flip 6 actually, they are slowly becoming better and the z flip 5 is already okay-ish but will last only about 2-3 years, maybe 5 but only if you are extremely careful with it.
Personally when it comes to flip, not talking about the fold, the flip has the main phone with plastic display and that looks like a toy to me and entire phone using experience is atleast with foldable there are usually 2 displays, one glass and one plastic
I salute your commitment to the foldable. A lot of people are talking about durability, but without early adopters like you, we aren’t gonna see the foldable with these issues resolved.
I know everyone leaves hate about it, but same. I'm happy he's into them. im hopeful about foldable screen tech and although I and most people cannot afford it, and it's not the best quality, I'm glad to see it being developed.
I guarantee there will be alot more people buying them if they didn't cost the price of a perfectly fine flagship with significant downgrades in some areas. Still I find them interesting and would like manufacturers to improve them, maybe just don't release 5 of them in 4 and a half years with barely any inprovement between generation like Samsung did
I got the Flip5 too even though I wanted to get the S23 Ultra. The big cover screen convinced me. 😅 I'm thinking of making videos showing how it's holding up every few months.
@@gloomysoomithat's common with their foldable line, the OnePlus one that's just released seems to have actual good cameras tho I hope Samsung step up their game next year
Me too brother.... Me too.... I bought a generic internal screen protector for my Fold 4 after the screen protector came off and it works surprisingly well!
@@aaronj3245it’s why I got it lol, the OS is utter shit, the battery life is shit, but it flips, you don’t see phones that flip too often, and the fact people complain over getting freedom in what apps they load, I’m not 12 anymore lol, I don’t use APKs anymore and if I do, I can get it on iOS easier lol
Well that just changed my mind about getting one until the future. Was thinking of getting one next year, but I'll wait until everything is hammered out to almost 100%
Food for thought: My brother has the flip 3 for 2 years now and it's still perfect. He dropped it a few times too. It all depends on how you use it. I just got the flip 5 and love it, but I baby all my phones so I'm confident I can keep it good for at least 2 years.
Get one if you can it’s not always about durability like how long does any phone really last could break anytime for whatever reason but it’s a really cool phone I think I’m gonna just cuz it’s the only phone I’ve actually really liked and felt the urge to spend money on
the tech is still new, a screen that flexible is bound to have issues, new tech tends to break down when they're first released to the public, with the years to come, it'll be cheaper and better to produce, therefor its just a waiting game before phones like the z flip have perfect flexible screens that has no issues
@@Kangiru_Noah they've had 4 and a half years to make it last more than a couple of months. I 4 years a go bought my used Galaxy S10+ for 650 and now all this time later is still used every day for 5 hours+ and yet works fine all this time later. If In 2019 i spent 1500 on a zflip 1 i would've bought a worse product and only would have had it for a couple of months. There's absolutely 0 reason to buy a Z flip right now
@@KeLamity_Ch he's always recommending it in videos. I've been watching Austin since 2017 and the only thing I don't like about him is how positive he is towards that phone
having seeing that each one of them failed on you after about a year of use, i would stop considering buying foldable phones even though they're really tempting
NOT ONE single foldable phone has made it past the destruction of the foldable phone industry, screen crease. EVERY SINGLE ONE eventually gets that crease. I’m an Apple user and I like the idea of a phone that can unfold to the size of a tablet. But that and the fact that I like the Apple Ecosystem too much, has kept me from swapping
@erikburzinski8248 what do you consider lasting 5 years? Running absolutly mint 5 years straight? Or like a repair or 2 that are warranty/insurance covered?
Man I wish I had the kind of "f you" money it takes to be able to make such an irresponsible financial decision. Not that I expect Austin of all people to make sane decisions to begin with lol. Keep on being you Austin.
I've had the Flip 3 since September 2021. The protector peeled after a few months, and about a year ago, it started developing cracks along the fold. It still works, but the fold line is covered in cracks and it looks terrible.
I only got the ZFlip 5 because it was free with trade in. I was using a S22 Ultra at the time and my Flip as my backup. Now I use my Flip as my daily driver and my S22U as my fun phone.
Got my first Z flip (Z aflip 5) partly because of your other vid about them. I absolutely love it and I don't see myself ever going back to a standard brick.
I got a steal on a flip 4 today... guys grandma bought the phone, they switched carriers like 2 weeks later and couldn't use the phone anymore. Guy was asking 350 I asked 315 and then before I met up with him he said 300 even would be good. This phone still has all its shipping stickers intact!!!
I've got a Z Flip 4, and have had it for six months now, no signs of any damage whatsoever, so fingers crossed that continues. Not too concerned as I have a two year warranty, and will have paid the phone off by then, so may well be ready to get a new phone by the time warranty runs out anyway. Not gonna lie, at the moment the plan will be to get a flip 5 then, cos I absolutely love this phone so far and have had no issues with it
I've got mine for 13 months now, it's still in perfect shape, the screen looks brand new. I just needed to replace the screen protector last week cause it started to peel off. Samsung charged me like 20 dollars for the service as my phone was out of warranty.
What are you doin wrong man my zflip 3 lasted a full 2 years still working until I traded it in for a zflip5 with the only issue being the fold line indent after a while
@@EvaCampbellLMAO THAT’S EVEN FUNNIER, The joke is that the video explained why it was bad! That was a joke right? Because the Z-flip is just a weak (Inside hardware AND outside hardware) S series phone.
Yeah mines missing the back bottom glass, screen protector peel, and stress cracks are also huge problems. Also having an issue with auto brightness that causes my screen to yellow/grey out. Luckily i caught and turned it off and my brigtness way down and my screen snapped back to normal. Flip 3 owner and yeah the phone is way to prone to breaking and defeating the entire purpose.
@@Imauser88it depends on the phone that the bloke receives Some last for years, while some breaks the next day. He just seems to be one of the unlucky ones
I love my flip 5 but....after 6 months the screen protector needed replacing and now it's been replaced twice in 3 weeks...beautiful phone for anyone that doesn't mind the maintenance 😅
I had one awhile back and the display started cracking at the hinge and a dead pixel bleed started at the top of the screen and it spread enough to where the display stopped working. It was a good phone at the time, just wished the display had more protection over it which maybe could have prevented this whole ordeal. I loved the convenience and practicality of the cover display though.
had the flip 5 for 2 months and the screen was broken. I always had a case and did not use the phone often. brought it back and got my money back. they didnt even question it because they told me they had many brought back. i stick with my "normal" phone..
This is the one weirdo in your friend group that ruins the iMessage group chat; no one really likes him, they just tolerate him and wonder who brought him into the friend group.
I bought an z flip3. The lifespan of the screen is allways 1 year. After 1year the screen started cracking the "ultrathin glass" and seperating slowly from the phone. 6 months later screen died. I love them because of the my nostalgia to classic flip phones. I would strongly recomand them for people which are buying yearly new phones.
Wish they would've just made it a normal flip but two touch screens instead. With an easy keyboard display/hide button that always shows. Would've been such a better phone. Would've gotten one even at the steep price
The design is amazing, but the durability issues are a dealbreaker for most people. Upgrading every 3-5 years is the goal, but a phone breaking within a year is not acceptable.
They just don't have the durability. I regret getting mine. After a year the screen was starting to fail, I got it replaced under warranty. But now I don't have a warranty any longer, and It's not worth it to me to pay to repair it, especially if it's going to fail again in short order.
I had a Flip 4. After 4 months, the screen protector peeled up. One morning on my while at work, an ant crawled into the rise. Looked like it was encased in amber. Put a 2nd screen protector on, that came up too.
One of the reasons i never jumped on that bandwagon. As a millennial who grew up with razrs, rizrs, pebbles and all manners of flip and slide phones, i know all too well how finnicky they can be with so many moving parts. I switched to slab phones in 2010 and just never went back and never will.
Bruh. TBH it is not ok if your phone breaks all the time and you just go and buy another one but who am i to judge you especially if you still enjoy using it
with z flips we got a reson to upgrade to newest model (the old one is broken). all other phones last for years and we feel kinda wastefull trading up when the phone we got works just fine
I just got the flip five and I love it. I know I'm late to the game and Samsung is rumoured to preview the new gen in July, but I didn't want to wait. I also got a pair of Samsung Buds FE for $50.
Its a good phone from my experience. Ive had the flip 3 for a few years and its in perfect condition. Ive had the flip 5 since it came out and its the same thing. Ive never had a problem with these phones.
really man thank you a lot I got a omen 870 2XX on board graphics intel hd 630 16 gb 3200mhz ram phantoms rgb lights everywhere you helped me become a tech again when I was gonna give up your shows helped me come out of my depression and get back out there
I bought Z flip 4 on october 2022 and the phone already broke down after 8 months of usage, the screen protector peeled off twice in the crease, the screen even didn't turn on when flipped, and the camera quality is kinda disappointing for such price. The flip 4 was a 3rd cycle of Samsung flip but still Samsung couldn't handle the most common problem in flip phone. I sold it for much lower price and switch to S23+ and i am very satisfied with it. Won't look even a glimpse at foldable phone until its durability proven
I love the Z Flip 5 so much. It has made my top 5 favorite devices of all time. 1. Galaxy S21 Ultra 2. Galaxy Note 4 3. Nexus 4 4. Sidekick 3 5. Galaxy Z Flip 5
For me, I started with the z flip 3 when it first came out, and each year, when the new one came out, I upgraded. Now on the 5 but I never had any problems. I never use casses, and I just dont drop my phone. These phones are definitely more delicate, but dont get one if you're worried about breaking it or something happening out of your control. Also, be careful around beaches with it or any dusty environments. Honestly, whenever I use a normal phone, it feels weird now, so i dont think I'll perosonally switch back soon.
I'm with ya. Still rocking a z flip 3. There insanly robust. I have been through a few, all of them because it gets air bubbles under the screen protector in the fold.
….. meanwhile I’m still rocking the same iPhone XR I’ve had since 2019. $540 carried me 4 years due to “bar”/“slate” smartphones having like 15 years of refinement while Austin has likely dropped at least a solid four grand in the same time frame on novelty phones, and this is why I think Apple’s been wise to never make a foldable
Seeing this in January 2024, been using the z flip 5 since launch, no issues. Normally had screen protector issues with the 3 and 4 at this point, but none with the 5
I've had my ZFlip 3 5G for 2 years. I noticed my screen protector peel at about 10 months of use, took it off, and now I have no screen protection. There is a small stress crack and it's hardly noticeable. For the price, I'd say mine has held up fairly well, and I will definitely buy again because it's a very convenient phone. My only gripe is that it has no aux port, but I use Bluetooth regularly so it isn't that big of an issue.
As much as I miss flip phones (with physical keyboards), I just don't think these have advanced enough yet. I don't like the idea of seeing a seam in my screen at all times, and the sheer amount of reports of stress cracks is way too high for me to justify paying that kind of money for one.
My flip 4 (current device used as of comment) was baught off of ebay as refurbished came without a screen protector and i still use it without one and the phone is great and has zero issues and maybe one day will get a flip 5 or whatever when this one fails but for now i am gonna stick with the flip series
I just switched from a Samsung S23 ultra to a Motorola Razr 2023 (cheaper version not plus version) and it's been holding up pretty well so far.... with as much as I open and close it lol
I’m still on my iPhone X. Use it around 12 hours a day for music, movies, tv shows. Do all my browsing, banking and social media through it. No problems whatsoever in 6 years. Z flips literally solve a problem that no one had to begin with them adds a dozen more problems that no one had to begin with.
Tbh I feel the same way about these flipping phones. Had the Z flip 4 and now have the Z flip five because my gf bought it for me as a gift. Cant help it they are so cool!
Bro, the tech for folding screens just isn't where it should be for phones like the Z flip to be a marketable device. My GF has had to have hers repaired due to stress cracks enough times that they pretty much told her if it happened again, she's either going to have to pay for it or buy a new phone.
I've had to replace my handset through insurance 4 times so far since November. Worst phone I've ever had. I have screen protector and case and the crease just keeps going
I almost bought that this year, but if you go to a store demo, you realize that screen is essentially plastic. That's not gonna hold up if thats gonna be your only, daily phone. Its cool, but damn its just too fragile.
I love tablet-style foldables more than flip-style foldables personally, and somehow I managed to make my Z Fold2, which I bought shortly after release, last for about 3 years with pretty much no issue. Only VERY recently did stress cracks begin to form in the crease section of the inner display. It still works just fine and I still have it, but I just upgraded to the OnePlus Open about a week and a half ago. I don't know if I was just lucky or if the Z Fold phones are a bit more durable than the Z Flip counterparts. Ever since I started using the Z Fold2, there's no possible way I can go back to regular phones now. I just love having a tablet which can fold and fit in my pocket, ESPECIALLY now that the OnePlus Open is out and the front display on it is basically the same as using a smaller phone, that you can then open to a tablet, or close back to a regular phone effortlessly.
i dont close my 3 anymore so its just a long regular phone now. kinda want to find a permanent open case for it. the middle of the crease is peeling really bad and its in the line where you are typing on a youtube comment like this. so if i make a mistake i have to backspace everything or keep typing til it scrolls up on its own. i got its refurbished and it lasted a good year before i had this issue happen. besides that the only other issue is the half flip settings and features dont work but thats a plus cause i hated them
Im the same with my fold 4, got a new one under insurance after its inside screen broke and got it repaired out of pocket when my new ones screen broke, both my fault due to severe fall stress. Got a dbrand case with better hinge protection and ive been very happy with my fold since then. Isnt cheap or practical, but i love my tablet phone for home use and it a good concersation starter and has many good features
The market of phones with motorized front cameras died almost immediately due to manufacturing costs and durability. The market of phones with screens on the back for selfies died for the same reasons. The market of folding phones, despite dealing with the same issues, is still not dead.
This is exactly why Apple isn’t messing with the flip phone yet. They knew full damn well that this is exactly what was going to happen-when you repeatedly fold something, it will break. Then on top of that, if the screen breaks on them flip phones, they’re expensive as hell too especially for a person that was dumb enough not to get the warranty or insurance on it to replace it.
