This is already 3 years old, and it is still one of the best black metal documentaries ever made. These were some seriously heartfelt interviews. You could tell that the presenter knew what these three guys had gone through and showed he cared. He asked hard questions, but not too much, and handled the rough parts like a pro. I'd be seriously afraid to know what something I asked or said could unleash. They are extremely depressive people and that's really tough.

This power of animals used to exist between human beings themselves, before we rejected our animal side by focusing only on our brain and on a system of man-made constructions and mathematical theories, rejecting our true nature in a way. Nowadays in human to human interactions, this unconditionally positive energy is rare to non-existing especially in urban areas, and this is why black metal, misanthropy, etc. exist today, in my opinion : it's only a reflection of the dark side of this absolutely non-human thing (call it Satan or not) that is ruling our current world right now.
@almongrel8377
@almongrel8377 8 лет назад
I agree and disagree. I certainly agree that black metal and misanthropy is certainly a product and reflection of a lack of human connection - that is obvious. However, I disagree that this lack of connection is primarily the result of human beings choosing to focus on intellectualism and elevating our intelligence, along with constructing elaborate and advanced technology. Quite the contrary, actually. I feel black metal (or much of metal in general for that part, as it stems from rock format and instrumentation), is primarily the result of, and a clear reflection of, the deliberate and effective dumbing down, degenerating of Western civilization into a depraved, immoral, primitive, empty, and thoroughly braindead and fiendish state of existence. The man-pet connection is something that has yet to be defiled, as it isn't very much so politically related, as well as much easier. Hence Scott's reaction to his cat, his only companion. Just step outside and look around you, whether you be in Europe or America. Do people seem to be "focusing only on our brains" and "mathematical theories"? In today's age, it's almost as if thinking is a crime. Being a logical, objective or clear minded person is a crime. Don't think - don't strive - don't be intelligent. Watch TV. Listen to popular "music". Eat GMOs. You can say whatever you want - as long as it's politically correct. Watch porn. These are the mantra of the times. These sick, sick times. Our psyche has been reduced to that of a mere animal - with no concern for what's important or what really matters. Only instant gratification. No responsibility. No taking responsibility for your actions. That is my opinion, at least.
@almongrel8377
@almongrel8377 8 лет назад
The family unit is also something that has been largely dissolved in Western civilization, particularly America. People have been so conditioned in this plastic Hollywood "culture" (social conditioning system), that they're hardly human anymore. There's hardly anything like a hike in the woods or revisiting nature - something I'm personally sure to do often to allow my mind to heal itself from all the filth.

As someone who has dealt with bad Depression, Anxiety and other mental disease bullshit I understand these men to a certain extent. When I found this music it opened up internalized feelings and experiences like never before. Without this music I don't know what kind of endless void I would fall into. This genre is something that accesses so many varieties of art, expression and history that allows artists to access so many varieties of symbolism and expression. Its simply the best escape from the hell my mind puts me through. Thats why I thank these guys for creating music that touches such a deep level of understanding in what it means to feel free and connected to the world that's not fake nor pedantic.

I don't think that Striborg is just wearing corpse paint to put on an act. As it was said earlier in this documentary, Russell lives in a part of the world where he can easily immerse himself in black metal culture and the solitude of nature and I think that, because of this, Russell is able to openly use things like corpse paint and black metal music to put himself at ease (This is probably why Russell seems to be more relaxed than the other musicians in this documentary). If Scott (Xasthur) and Jef (Leviathan) were in the same environment that Russell is currently in, then they would probably behave in a similar manner.

@DyingCr0w
@DyingCr0w 9 лет назад
I believe Scott is the most genuine of the 3. He lowered every single barrier most consider "taboo", fed by trauma or not, he may have found the balance within chaos. That's where he draws his inspiration; that state of mind and being socially active simply cannot coexist. That's who Scott is, the life ho chose to live, and he is legit. After watching this documentary, i will most certainly give Xastur a second thought. Jeff is a little over the top, downright violent instinct, fed by trauma more then anything. Still genuine, but also dangerously unbalanced. Russel can inspire himself without the the need to draw from negativity, mostly he looks like a normal guy who can emphatize, drawing inspiration. If he needs to put in the act to consolidate it, should that be a problem? Maybe it's a little cliche, but in the end, what matters is the result. If any of you are all into Black Metal and don't like Russel's act, well, you shouldn't be into black Metal at all. Because, in fact, most Black Metal bands can put out the most hilarious acts we will ever see in the history and future of mankind. I always look into Black Metal shit if i want to have some good laughs.

This is insanely heavy and meaningful to me. This documentary series is very motivating. Amazing job by the videographers and especially interviewer, I feel like this has opened a whole new window into black metal for me and I'm sure many others. While others might think this genre is "cringe" or something, it seriously delves deep into the psyche of people who feel outcast and don't have a place in most music scenes. Us people need something more powerful and meaningful to attach ourselves to. Ten years detached, it still has gripped me and made me feel as if my feelings are valid and have value in scene. Thank you so much Noisey for the quality documentary, exploring the outcast fringe of our subculture and making us feel important.

This is still one of the best black metal documentaries I’ve seen. The interviewers are not snobby and or brain dead and actually seem interested in the subject, and they also seemed to respect the artists personal life by not just asking about their lives and they focus on what’s important which is the music and the inspiration for that music.

These kinds of projects are some of my utmost favorites. Ones that tend to fall under the "Atmospheric Black Metal" tag. The Summoning(2 members, easily one of, if not the most influential), Caladan Brood(2 members, As awesome as the character they're named for), and Midnight Odyssee(1 member, the great Dis Pater, who makes everything from the 20-minute songs, to painting the album covers). These individuals know how select their niche is, and they hold nothing back.

I've watched this once before a long time ago, and just decided to watch it again. Very enjoyable and well-structured documentary. Definitely agree with a lot of the people in saying that it was a very genuine and realistic interview. No bullshit, no silliness, just pure heart to heart communication. I'm very much a fan of all three artists; they were all involved as some of my earliest favorite DSBM bands, ranking as Xasthur, Leviathan, and then Striborg. It is quite interesting to observe these individuals outside of their music and engaged in their every day life; you get to see that they are really just chill dudes who assimilate the beauty of darkness to create works of art and to use as an outlet for their turbulent minds. A lot of normies might think of this as being edgy and negative, but I like to view it as a healthy outlet for the pains that this cruel world relentlessly places onto us day by day.

Never have bought a Black Metal album, but there's such a realness about Xasthur. A man who's so incredibly deep that I feel compelled to buy his album. Nothing fake or pretentious about him at all. I felt like Leviathan is a more varied and somewhat charismatic person relative to the others interviews, and I sort of get this Glen Danzig type vibe about him. Not sure if anyone picked up on the same impression though.

This documentary sent me to the outskirts of the web to research the history, the corpse paint, the sound, the tone, and the living organism that is Black Metal. Great job in painting a portrait of the three artists you featured. The 3 part really got personal with them.
