Santana,The Vaughn Brothers, and Los Lobos. This was an awesome colaboration. Probably the only time these guys played together. Thanks for putting it up.
I know its been along time since you posted. But yes, this was the only time it happened. And I was there. Freaking amazing concert. And to boot, it was santana's reunion tour with his original band. And the only time I saw SRV. RIP. He was bigger then life.
I was a lucky son of a gun to see this show. A co worker at the time had an extra ticket and offered it to me. This was the ONLY time Santana, fabulous thunderbirds, and SRV ever played together. And not only that, this was Santana's reunion tour with the original band. About 4 hours of music and they all jammed together in the end and that was the first and last that ever happened. All three bands were at their peak. Amazing concert. Also the first and only time I saw SRV which I'm so blessed to see him play. He was amazing.
It always makes me sad when the comments wind up becoming a 'this guitarist is best' and 'no, that guitarist is better' competition. When, over the past 80 years or so, we've literally had dozens of incredibly talented people who could make the strings sing and bring heaven to our ears. Beck, Page, Vaughns, Allman, Hendrix the list always goes on and on. Lets just be so very glad that we have these 'guitar gods' to listen to, and forget all the 'whos' better' baloney, because amongs't themselves, no one could pick just one. You want a real life comment? Hendrix even wondered if Terry Kath might be better than he was. Of course, the answer is no; because they're all great. And they're all different. It's like trying to say which tastes best, orange juice, chocolate, steak or pizza. Each is so very special in their own way, and they all have magic in their fingers.
Deb B You're absolutely correct, let's stop the better-best mess, all music is subjective, all music is different, so let's just enjoy each spirit, each personality lay it down as only he or she can. No definite better or best it's who touches your soul and pricks your consciousness, don't hate just appreciate!!!
Everyone commenting seems to have differing opinions...I just think we saw and heard some of God's best musical work on this stage. Great musicians and performers all around.
It takes balls to get up on that stage with them dudes! And Greg Rolie rules on keyboards and vocals! My compliments to the musical chef Carlos Santana!!
Gregg does look a bit like he was involved in the restaurant business, lol. Too much touring with Journey. Gregg's a wonderful voice and keyboard player. What a line-up here!
When the drums come in at 1:29 it just sounds so powerful, and you can really tell how strong and disciplined Santana's rhythm sections have to be. One of the things I've always appreciated about Santana is the way he's brought drumming to the front in popular music.
I never knew this existed until this evening...I've watched it a half dozen times at louder and louder volume....it's melting the skin off my skull.....
This by far one of the unknown gems of the music world, agree someone needs to go back and clean some things up in the studio, but its awesome no matter...legends!!!
For all the comments - pro and con about the guitarists (all pointless subjectivity) - I do hope everyone notices the percussion section - Armando Peraza on congas, Cheptio Areas on timbales and Michael Shrieve on the drums. If it weren't for these lads (their predecessors and successors) Santana would be little more than just another band from San Fran. And then there is the real voice of the band, Greg Rollie, whose Hammond is also such an integral component of the overall texture. While I love 'Caravanserai', 'Welcome' and 'Barboletta', I see that as Santana Phase Two, with 'Santana III' the peak of Phase One. It will be interesting to see if the new Santana IV lineup (w/Schon and Rollie) lasts beyond the 2016 tour and album.
I was there too. I don't have to explain how great it was. The only time I saw SRV. He was amazing. And when they all played together in the end. Unforgettable.
Holy gesmokes...this has to be my favorite Santana song. Amazing. I saw Santana as !opening act! for my all time hero --Eric Clapton--in August 1975. God Bless you, Carlos... RIP SRV..Thank you Los Lobos...Jeff Wilson, age 52, Portland, Oregon USA
I was at that concert too Jeff. Carlos and Eric actually switched opening for each other, and joined each others encore! Great night, terrible acoustics in "the Glass Palace"!
It was October 3rd not October 2nd, I was the house photographer at Pacific Amphitheater at the time and remember it was the third because it was Stevie's birthday ,, Check out my Facebook page for photo's of the show
They need to take this recording into the studio, clean it up and re-release it. I bet it could be a big seller. Another fast jam solo to listen to from the late great SRV.
Santana ,Back in The Day were Killin "Live" ,seen them alot, These, are Mostly Still all The Original Members, Plus The added Guests.Great Find. Thanks... Peace
Stop complaining about the audio or visuals. This was recorded on a hand-held VTR before any smartphone was ever invented. The person who recorded this was probably lucky to sneak the camera into the concert
There are many classic live jams that we'll not get to see and though the quality of this vid sucks this put a tear in my eye! I had to see how SRV played over a Latin beat and though very subdued he did not disappoint. Just the fact that he played almost fluidly over this mambo-jambo is a testament to his skill. Sure he coulda maybe outplay even Santana but this was a jam of respect for ppl united in the love for music, not a competition of egos. SRV's a real human being and I'm proud to have seen my fellow Texan many times.
I have audio of Stevie and Carlos playing and encore jam together in December of 1989, pretty good stuff. But to see those two together would have been awesome. Along with a new Stevie album!
Thanks for posting this video. I was fortunate enough to be there for that show. That encore when he brought everybody out was incredible. Probably the most guitar talent I've ever seen on one stage.
Neal Schon owns the guitar solo to this song. Just not for Stevie, tho if he had gotten it sorted out in advance he, SRV Main Man, could've matched the original. The Lobos man's a stinger--great workin'! Jimmie rocks, too.
Legions..Stevie has a double headed guitar and its smoking..Hitting every cord and string on time..Stevie Ray Vaughan ain't missing nothing or Jimmy Vaughan..along with Santana..U got the greats and legends right in front of you..
Stevie Ray Vaughn is not able to play in his normal way out of reverence and respect for some of his favorite guitar players. Otherwise, he would dominate this music, this song, this performance, and this stage. As only Stevie Ray Vaughn could do.
he was a humble Texas boy who just wanted to play, I remember my friends would tell me about him playing in his garage in Oak Cliff, before anyone knew who he was, everyone was always welcome, we knew he was destined for greatness but he just wanted to share his music, that's all he wanted
1drumm Obviously he's your fav, but it's a compilation of great guitarist, not a band competition! Obviously you weren't there, SRV, played exceptionally well, as did the other's. It's a concert I'll never forget!!!
never seen stevie play a double necked guitar. greg rollie sounds damned good. great two note range there los lobos dude-jeez. and as always no talent "percussionists" (not drummers) tryin to steal the spotlight away from real musicians.
I'll be dipped!!! Where did this come from. Had some trouble loading it but, WOW, just when ya think you've heard it all, a masterpiece like this comes around. Thanks so much, can't tell you how much I enjoy this.
