BTW, areas in the US that do have large amounts of McMansions do not have public transit, because it defeats the whole purpose of exclusivity. Being able to afford a home of that size means owning multiple vehicles. Add more parks to increase the land value, and a school bus route for the kiddos 😀
@kaltaron1284
@kaltaron1284 2 года назад
He just unlocked the helicopter routes, didn't he. Would that be exclusive enough? He could disconnect the bus route from the hub and call it the local school bus, couldn't he?
@darkblood777
@darkblood777 2 года назад
McMansion neighborhoods don't even use school buses anymore. They either drive their kids to school themselves or they have a personal driver. This is especially true if they live in a gated community.
@SpringLeafWolf
@SpringLeafWolf 2 года назад
@@kaltaron1284 that was a police helicopter sevice he placed down, which more often than not is situated on a police compound, and not to be confused for medical helicopter services. In the US jails are centrally located both within high rise areas (downtown) and suburban-rural areas (where McMansions exsit), whereas prisons are more remote and almost wholly isolated. 1st responder helicopter services are slightly remote and often hidden away but close enough to important infrastructure they patrol. Since this is a realistic city build, and I hope Sir Biffa reads this, the police helicopter service needs its own area with a well built road and not a dirt road. No other vehicles should be using their roads besides them; placing it in the forest industry is not realistically suitable. Furthermore, public transit should be solely utilized for the inner city in Mississippitea,😏 "capitealism" is insidious & people whom can afford actual McMansions do not like public transit (poor ppl mode of movement) that's just how US rich folk think. What Biffa built in this video was a regular US urban sprawl. McMansions are often gated communities, surrounded by golf courses, don't have offices nearby, have exclusive access to waterfront properties, and have their own services which the inner cities have no access to. In the US, areas that have McMansions were purposely built to be as exclusive and isolated as possible whilst still remaining somewhat connected enough to their nearest major city...for voting purposes and taxes. Regarding school busses...McMansion dwellers don't play around. They don't like socialist programs outside of fire departments, police stations, parks, libraries, and their children's educations. A bus hub located within the city that dispatches school busses to the homes of McMansion dwellers is a no go. They require/demand their own services/connections and thus the land value ought to be the brightest green Skylines has on the scales.
@SpringLeafWolf
@SpringLeafWolf 2 года назад
@@darkblood777 you are mostly correct, however, wealthy US people have their kids arrive to school via a private driver, but rich people don't. What people need to understand is that the term "McMansion" doesn't denote a family's living standards. Most of the people that live in those types of homes can't even afford them outright (meaning the homes aren't paid off in full). School busses are very much still part of the social frabic of McMansion neighborhoods. There's old money (trusts, family assests, LLCs etc) and then there's new money (grinders, hustlers and hedge funders). And somewhere in between there's...well...rich folks. "If a millionaire spends $1, they aren't a millionaire anymore." "If you can't afford to buy it twice, you can't afford it at all."

@@SpringLeafWolf I know he hasn't placed any helicopter depots down but I think he has unlocked helicopter routes. But I agree that the placement of the police helicopters and prison is not realistic. Maybe near the tunnel he built this episode?

Agreed. These aren't really McMansions. However, there are lots of new developments going on around where I live and they always end up looking like this. Some houses are completely finished and occupied while others are in various states of construction all at the same time. While not all of these developments contain McMansions, many of them do, so I think this sort of patchwork look has been associated with that kind of construction even if the houses themselves don't exactly fit the definition.

Hi Biffa - As an American I have a few comments. First - the "McMansions" look like regular normal houses. Nobody would call those "mansions" over here. Secondly, if you are going for a "mansion" look, there would not be 4 lane roads or traffic lights in the residential areas. There wouldn't even be road lines. There would be NO mass transit either. These Mansions are usually exclusive, very large, single family homes in a private pastoral type setting. Lots of space for lawns and gardens, lots of trees, and no shops. The owners of these properties don't want a lot of strangers coming into their areas. These types of locations are often gated communities. There may be a central "clubhouse" with a pool, but other than that, they are very private.

The houses in the pack aren’t really McMansions, all their features match each other and those pillars actually have a use for holding up the patio roof. The one in the thumbnail though shares a lot of common problems: none of the windows being a standard size, no wood is the same type/colour, the roof is far too tall whilst having both tile and metal roofing and there’s railings protecting a non-existent balcony.

part of the trouble is that the residential zoning just isn't big enough to do a McMansion justice. Even my suburban midcentury ranch house is plotted on what amounts to a 3 cell wide by 4 deep lot, and 4x4 is as big as they come in game. Actual McMansions would be on lots closer to 7x7 or 8x8 (or even bigger; lots are often upwards of 60m wide by 100m deep) and the game just doesn't support that. I mean, that much architectural extravagance needs ROOM for 5-car garages.

I have a name for the Underhill District! In December of 1773 we had a little "tea party" in Boston Harbor because we refused to pay the twopence British East India Tea Company tea tax. So I think *Bostean Farms* would be fine considering that tea grows on plantations which are a type of farm. Edit: don't be afraid of roundabouts, Biffa. Carmel, Indiana, a suburb of Indianapolis here in the US has something like 100 of them, which is absolute roundabout heaven! And if you landscape them they fit right in with posh neighborhoods.

Hey Biffa! I saw the location where you were trying to put the interchange off the cliff side. We travel through the Appalachian Mountains a lot and there are a ton of interchanges like that. We use a lot of diamond interchanges here but with modify them a little bit. The cut into the hill under the freeway to make room for a road to go underneath. A lot of times the on/off ramp on one side is up against a cliff wall and the other goes off into the local area. If you look at 36°37'25°N 82°10'52° and then just follow interstate 81 east you should see some good examples!🤓

I came up with "McTeague Estates" for the new housing area. In the US the term "estate" is not a generic term applying to a zone (we don't have commercial estates, industrial estates, etc.) but it does imply wealth and perhaps snobbery. Location names with a hint of Scots can do the same (think Inverness, Illinois -- but not Glasgow, Montana). I also agree with the comments that I wouldn't consider these homes McMansions, although that has nothing to do with anything. It does, indeed, depend on your persepective (I'm in the Seattle suburbs). A new monstrosity just got built across the street, blocking half our view of Puget Sound, and it overpowers the neighborhood. It has no soul, like most new construction in these parts; it looks like a lot of cubes thrown together into a building. There are five houses about a mile up the road that are built to resemble Mediterranean villas, but they all look alike. To me, those are "McMansions" as opposed to plain old "mansions" because they're a cookie-cutter style. Neither are they on large plots; land around here is worth five times the same square footage of building.

To be fair, in the US if a window has shutters, they most likely do not work and are purely for show.

McMansions. Upper middle class cookie cutter homes that were slapped together with prefabbed components like a Whopper but sold at the value of a custom gourmet burger with fresh NGO products...largely because of the neighborhood. A lot of wasted space to make it bigger then it needs to be. Oh and for American style roads. One we don't use divided roads that much. They are just to expensive to build and maintain. They are usually only put in places with higher speeds and/or there is a need to keep people from left turning in the middle of the block into oncoming heavy traffic. Most of medians are concrete, with maybe some areas having the wider section being grass or trees (but the smaller turn road section always is concrete). Unfortunately the only mod that has a sizable collection of American style concrete divided roads hasn't been maintained in quite a while. Hopefully BIG Roads will eventually get some more concrete divides. Dividers aren't common. Grassy/tree divides even rarer. Also a 2 lane at intersection will usually be 3 lanes for dedicated left turn, however... we can turn on red unless otherwise marked not to. As such the farthest right lane is either both straight and right turn, or a 4th lane is added for a dedicated right turn. they don't run a 2 lane road then force everyone going straight into 1 lane at every intersection. It's two lanes through the entire road. It's only certain high traffic areas that get a separate dedicated turn lane (ei, 4 lanes from 2) because we can turn right on red, so cars dont block through traffic. TMPE has an option in settings for right turn on red. And as other's have mentioned, most residential roads don't have markings. Those are usually done on any street considered a through/collector, or a commercial area (pretty much any kind of high traffic area). So you maybe have one or two roads running through the middle of a residential area that's marked up, because it's either a collector or a through road, but the side streets don't.

Love the episode, keep up with the good work. The trumpet interchange you made definately looks realistic. I personally think that it should be bridged in that area, would definately play the part with a few trees :)

As someone who deals with US housing descriptions professionally, I've always felt that the "eclectic" description for design styles is a bit overused, however it is probably a more likely name here than McMansions. Turns out that most of the nouveau riche don't like to be informed that they bought something that others describe as a joke.

Eclectic: composed of elements drawn from various sources. I think it's a fitting description, since these houses mix elements from mediterranean and more northern styles. Resulting in an indistinct mishmash architecture. Eclectic.

I would suggest to call the suburb "ceylon riverside". I would call it like that, since its right by the river. And ceylon tea is a tea sort. So its tea related and fits to the location of the suburb...

That interchange might be the most American thing in this city yet. Highway exits in the middle of nowhere with the vague hint of a town somewhere nearby are a staple of U.S. road trips! Nothing like getting off the highway because it says there's a gas station and then driving 30 minutes through nothing before you find it. 😂

Instead of just disabling the zoning on the main road you could try having it set to prioritize the side streets to still have zones on the main road while. Also wanted to mention there is a mod that lets you reach beyond borders, allowing the modification & building of roads & trains outside the squares you own. I like it as allows connecting to highways that are just out of reach. Or connecting to train tracks the early squares might not have.

If you want the McMansion district done properly, you need a nearby golf course. But not necessarily a great golf course, to make it more realistic. If your McMansion district was Texas-themed, the neighborhood high school would have multi-million dollar football facilities that would rival many many mid-sized colleges in other areas of the country.

I think right next to the ore/industry area would be a great spot for the prison complex. All the worker barracks in Forestry kinda got boned and lost that tucked away feel. Also the police helicopter literally went straight for that area, as though telling you it was the perfect spot. Just a thought

I've tried the McMansion theme like this. I found some houses took forever to level up past 3 to become actual houses. I'd have level 5 with a level 2 next door that just wouldn't level up. I think the theme would be perfect if only the first level was construction site.

In the real world I've never been convinced 3 lanes down to 2 is better or safer than just a slip lane. It tends to be a moment of panic for people who weren't paying attention or who prefer to just drive in the slow lane. Plenty of last minute swerving and running into the chevrons.

As someone living in McMansion land, the real key to McMansions is not the architectural value - that's just generalized smear. The main key is a big house on a tiny little plot of land. Real mansions have a big house on big grounds, McMansions are generally in tight spacing with minimal side lawns and sometimes minimal back as well.

for the tunnel, I think it would look better if you switched one more section to not be tunneled, and push the tunnel entrance back into the mountain a bit. That first little bit is shallow enough that it would just be a cutting.

That new connecting highway (between the trumpet and the city) seems like it has a lot of "winkies and wonkies" as CPP would say. You might want to try and use the sloping tool and "straighten curve" tool from network multitool alot more there. For example sloping the whole tunnel instead of having the tunnel go on level ground and then suddently have a steep incline between the last two nodes. Also starting the curve towards the trumpet right when they exit the tunnel instead of first crossing the rail tracks on a straight bridge before then having a very minor s-curve before the actual curve towards the trumpet. And overall that section is complete rollercoaster... go even inside the tunnel, steep slope up inside the tunnel, slope down towards crossing the river and then steep slope up again towards the trumpet. why not just keep it briged at even level between the tunnel and trumpet - then you might have a lot less sloping towards the existing higway.
