Fasting just feels good. Lots of energy, no food comas, no heaviness in my guts. It's a little reversed for me, where fasting is the "lifestyle" and breaking the fast or having a feast day full of protein is the "tool".
I fast because I want to support my wife, who is an Intermittent Faster. Also, I find that eating 2 meals a day helps to keep my blood glucose under control (I'm NOT diabetic) and because I sleep better (we stop eating by 2:00 PM). Lastly, as a life long athlete, I think it fits in my lifestyle and mindset.
In the years before the 1990’s, many more people unbeknownst to themselves practiced intermittent fasting. However, the 1990’s is around the time when snacking and food and dining options exploded and people were eating throughout the day. And to those who were born AFTER the 1990’s, the concept of intermittent fasting is completely foreign to them. This is where we are now- Obesity, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease & Cancer. Thank you Thomas for reintroducing me to intermittent fasting. It’s a lifestyle I will never change.
It's not just that, it's what we eat. I highly recommend the new book by Dr Chris van Tulleken "Ultra Processed People". An eye opener for many, but a lot of those here probably already knew this instinctively. Still, well worth a read!
@@bakakafka4428 yes. I would say cooking our own meals is the best option. It's healthy eating healthy fresh foods and we know what ingredients to add in. Save time and money, save a lot of money from eating homemade meals.
You made a really great point. I don’t remember snacking a lot back in the day because we were on the move doing things outside or whatever. Saturday morning cartoon time was another story but even then it was just a big bowl of cereal till noon and then out the door we went. Plus as others have mentioned, ingredients weren’t as toxic so there’s that piece too.
Fasting is a fun tool! Been following fasting protocols since 1978, not going to stop now. Been fasting 39hrs, since yesterday. I mix things up. I neglected fasting, among other things, after a terrible tragedy and gained 56lbs that I lost in 8 months of focused fasting 5 years ago and fasting has helped me maintain my size 4-6.
Great info , I've been fasting for 4 months now, usually 18/6 It has helped me lose weight and now maintain current weight . It is part of my lifestyle now , ive seen so many benefits personally , will never stop fasting.
I am one for the science. And I totally respect the findings. But on a personal note when I fast and weight train the way my body appreciates the gains and results is beyond amazing. I listen to my body I call it my field doctor. I appreciate this video. Thanks doc l
I get a boost of energy from fasting and i love it! It makes me feel better all around. It also helps my body get rid of addictions to bad food, like sugar.
I fast when I’m on the road and it’s the ultimate. No chasing lunches or dinner, fighting off a nap in the middle of the day, improved focus and the psychological benefit of knowing that you’re doing the body good. Never stop doing what works
That one thing of appetite suppression and NOT getting hungry actually is one heck of a benefit for me when I am busy and actually do not have time to eat at any specific time.
I will never stop fasting. I have never been able to control my diet the way I can now. AND I feel fantastic. All the time! I am 68 and still borderline diabetic but I expect that I will improve as time goes on. I still battle a sweet tooth but I have such progress I'm sure I'll be able to stay ahead of this. Fasting gives me a structure and keeps my focus on nutrition. And I also like the feeling of an empty stomach. I never feel sluggish. I have learned so much Thomas!
The focus aspect you speak of is something I have a very valuable appreciation for - how easy it can be to experience the thin end of the wedge, and how easily you can let a good habit become a little too loose. I would like to say thanks for teaching the concept of feel, flexibility and randomness in the application of IF, to keep it effective and as you say it becomes a tool rather than an autonomous behaviour. As you say it can be fun too.. as much as it's a pain to try and find foods, given all the bad stuff out there, it can be a fun challenge to either play with recipes or begin from scratch and try combinations. The whole keto nutrition approach surprised me, packing quite a punch as I dropped from 184lbs to 154lbs (I want to say) over the course of about a month and a half..? Feeling better, looking better and down four inches on the jeans waist size.
I have been intermittent fasting for over Nths and it works for me. And it's easy and I'm not even hungry.I drink my water and excersise. Many people say fasting isn't good for ourselves. But it's good And works for me. I fast between 16- 20 hrs. I love fasting and I'm 66 yrs young 😂
When he said it helps to put up some parameters if you’ve ever struggled with addiction- that resonated. I wouldn’t say I’m addicted, but I definitely struggle with over eating and eating out of boredom, giving in to temptation, etc. Maintaining a minimum of a 12 hour fast, though I strive for 14 hours, helps me cut out at least a few hours where I otherwise would be consuming unnecessary calories.
I relate 100%! I was anorexic and bulimic in my younger years and have struggled with eating off and on. Crash dieting…yo-yo…whatever you wanna call it. I finally found keto and started exercising and lost all the weight I wanted to use and ate until I was full as long as I stayed in my carb range. I got tired of not eating any carbs…Healthy or not! So since I was at my goal weight I decided to start intermittent fast. I ate healthy carbs and even got to eat snacks and sweets I wouldn’t normally have on a “diet”. I haven’t gained back any weight after a year and I’m happier now then I ever have been. I don’t miss “breakfast” or “lunch” and I look forward to my dinner when I can eat what I want to eat. Life’s too short to be obsessing about what I eat. At my menopausal age I just want to be able to get the healthy staple foods into my diet first and then If I want to have a doughnut after that then by God I have one!
This is good information about who and why we should fast. My favorite is focusing, your right I find too fasting helps me focus and lessen the power my food addiction has over me. Thanks.
Thomas, I've been watching your videos for about 6 months now. In that time I've lost 20 lbs, down to 13% bf, 65 bpm resting heart rate, liver enzymes now normal, all blood work normal, VO2max went from below to above average. Average bp went from 125/88 down to 104/68 all without ANY medication😁. Huge thank you to you and your sponsors! Job well done. Looking forward to any maintenance videos you could make.
Thanks Thomas! As a person who has struggled with my weight my entire life, it is nice to hear your honesty about wanting and liking to be lean. Fasting has been life changing for me because it freed me from constant worry and obsession over what I “should or should not “ eat and that is freaking amazing!
I will never stop fasting because I did try every diet to lose weight but nothing did work What I love about fasting is that I just don't eat a period of time
Hey Thomas! Please tell people that it may be really difficult in the beginning. I was miserable for the first 3 to 4 weeks. I ordered the LMNT fasting drink you advertised and I love it ! Doing much better with this drink. Please tell folks about it again!
U have to reach a point where it's no longer a thought. U eat when ur hungry. That's it. Eliminate the added sugar and it happens naturally. The drug addiction fades and hunger disappears. U fight it bc of boredom and the conditioning of 3 meals.
I also experience the "dawn phenomenon" fasting AT MINIMUM 12 hrs overnight, my blood sugar levels still increase with NO CARB INTAKE but now never exceed dangerous levels.
I started fasting at the beginning of last month and I enjoy it. I do 16:8. Sometimes I'll go a little longer. I've gone as long as 21 hours. It just depends on how I feel. That's what makes it so great. I'm in charge. I noticed that I'm just not hungry always when I get up in the morning. So, I'll fast that day. I'll fast two or three times a week. Once again. It depends on how I feel.
100% agree. Main thing for me that fasting achieves is mental focus (much more productive than usual) and appetite control (when I’m fasting I’m not tempted to snack - sounds backwards but that’s how it is for me)
Same. I’m good for days in a fasted state knowing that all movement is being powered by “onboard storage” along with the autophagy that it brings. After about 72 hours I’m looking forward to breaking fast 😅
Thank you Thomas. Always nice to hear some practical tips for "when" a person achieves their goals. Throwing away modalities is never a good idea....they should all be tools in the toolbelt.
Great video. Using it as a “tool” is a great analogy. If I have plans for a big lunch or dinner with family I just don’t eat for the other meals. It’s just easier than trying to subconsciously or consciously track calories.
These hit home 💯! Just got done going through a grooling fasting and eating and working regiment that got me back to where i was 2 years ago when i was at my ideal weight. Now, to hold and grow muscle. Sooooo much easier to maintain and add, then work backward. Thanks for all your videos and research!!!! 💪👍👍👍👍
Yes yes yes to help and keep the lines bright. One summer cold drink that I discovered for fasting is black coffee with spearmint or other minty herb tea.
Time Stamp 8:00 Exercise is the quickest way to up your rate of autophagy, while fasting is the best way to keep your rate of autophagy elevated; when you break your fast you stop the autophagy... no matter how you started it. The total amount of autophagy is the area under the curve that represents the autophagy rate. That area is jointly proportional to the duration of the fast and the average rate of autophagy during that time interval. Exercise early in the fast reduces the amount of time you need to fast for the same benefit by raising your average rate of autophagy. Intense exercise can quickly raise your autophagy rate to the rate that would take 72 hours of fasting to reach with zero exercise ... but if you immediately break your fast so that duration is small, your total autophagy is very small compared to that of the three day fast. If both subjects go three days, the exerciser's the two areas have the same height, but one is a rectangle and the other a triangle, so the exerciser gets approximately twice the total area ... that is about twice the total autophagy.
Love your logic, thank you, as a big guy struggling with weight and medication making fasting so much harder, it's great to hear some good lifestyle advice I can apply directly to see what works for me. Thank you.
Why will i never stop fasting? Because it’s just makes me feel like an apex, fasting for 20 hours daily while doing interval morning cardio and resistance training in fasted state while the timing of breaking the fast where i enjoy most is actually breakfast-9:00-10:00am. While want to increase the fasting period to 23 hours OMAD and will eventually reach it. Fasting habit is the future and the future starts now. 👆🏻
his syain the truth....now im more happy, brain alertness is high specially during the day i have more energy as in more...not like before im over weight...watching this guy makes me do more for my body.....
I needed to hear that! But honestly, Dr Attia is very convincing! 😂 I am on and off keto since 2017 and love it. My struggle is getting enough protein…
Thomas- great way to explain it, bravo! I do the same thing- I fast a few times a week effortlessly without even thinking about it and because I do that, sometimes I could go without eating for 20 hrs without any effort.
As a so called "poor" man I intermittent fast at least 5-6 days a week, and when I do eat it's usually late afternoon with something like sardines or chicken. I take advantage of cayenne pepper when I have it, and unrefined coconut oil, usually in my coffee with some himalayan pink salt and star anise/cloves, and I walk a lot barefoot on the beach where the ocean water is hitting my feet. The sun hitting me. I'm blessed more than I even know, but most brainwashed sheeple don't know, so they prefer to hate on me. One fear that holds a lot of people back is the fear of the unknown. Be so strange that you are the unknown. The reason the God gave you two ears and one mouth is because you should listen at least twice as much as you speak.
Intermittent fasting every day 18-20hrs, keto diet most part of the year, weight lifting and running fasted 95% of the time, maintaining weight while building muscle and constantly improving my running abilities. Lately I broke 1h40mins on the Half marathon (fasted) and I keep getting new PBs on all my distances. Never going to quit intermittent fasting!
Having northern European ancestry, my body is designed to a changing diet with the seasons. I find fasting is best in the cold months here in MN. Too active in the summer.
When I started fasting, I thought I'll do it for one year and be done with it. It has been more than a year now, don't see a reason not to continue doing it. My number one tool for fat loss!
I agree Thomas.I see the results of fasting when I have not even planned it, like when I travel, loving to use this to my benefit.,so yes I fast on and off.
I only started fasting 4 months ago 18/6 or 16/8 and follows a keto way of eating( lost 6 kilos) with low impact excersise and walks 10 kilometres everyday.I am approaching 68 and feeling really well and healthy. 💐🙏
What does your fasting week look like? When do you fast for how long do you fast how many times per week? Thank you this will be extremely helpful to know. X
After almost 2 years of daily intermittent fasting, I fixed my insulin resistant and able to bring down blood glucose from 117 to the 80s. Now I eat because I want to, not because I feel hungry. The feeling of being hungry and craving is no longer exist
Spiritual reasons are important but I'm starting to be able to see my abs and obliques much more clearly 😂 spirit & flesh working together for once. 296 lb to 194.
Totally 💯 my fasting insulin is 3 uIU/ml. My A1C 5.3% at 2022 and 5% this year. Everyone in my family is either diabetic or pre-diabetic. I will prove it is not generic 👍💪💪
If you are not going pure carnivore, you can treat carnivore like a fast and do it intermittently. You will get all the benefits except autophagy, which 17 hours is too short for anyway. It is easy to get to 20 hours+ fasting on carnivore. It is actually quite the time-savings because you have fewer meals that are easier to prepare and shop for. If you won't give up plants, restrict them to 3 days or less per week. Better yet, go full carnivore for 2 weeks and then add in the 3 days per week with the bare minimum plants for the needs you believe you have. Switching from carnivore to keto is VERY easy. You can do much less carbs and they'll be a treat not a restriction. Look for a carnivore way to meet whatever need first. Don't use a plant where organ meat will do. If 3 days a week you put half an ounce of a few key plants in your ground beef, you will be doing better than most. BTW, the mental health benefits you are experiencing are because you are not poisoning yourself. You will experience it with carnivore too.
Why I haven't stopped Warrior diet (aka Evening Intermittent Fasting even though I'm already decently lean at 12-13% fat? Because I can eat until I'm full, no other diet allows a big eater like myself to eat like 5 people and still being lean, also because I don't waste time eating and cooking several times per day like a normal diet, I don't have constipation anymore, nor acne, I look way younger than my age, and many many more benefits. Best
After including fasting in my life for many years, I find that I just naturally have days when I don't have much of an appetite and other days when I feel more hungry. So I use it to my advantage. On days when I look up and it's already 3 or 4pm and I've had no thought of food I just ride it out either I'll want a small meal a little later, or I'll finish the day with the fast. Either way, it turns out to be a calorie deficit and helps with weight maintenance. The main thing is I don't feel the need to force myself to eat when I'm not hungry because I know that not eating for a day or even three is not going to harm me as long as I eat healthy meals when I eat and generally maintain my weight within a healthy range.
I am aimed to fast like the alternative day fasting or by chance. But I have the problem: on the day of fasting I am not capable to do my workouts, and the next day after fasting I feel like I need to rest, so I don’t want to train neither. If I start my day with workouts- I will probably end up eating, so my fasting will be ruined that day. Maybe I just need time to be more adaptive to fasting and keto to have more energy for trainings any day not depended on fasting. I am also going to add some fruit occasionally during workouts. Or maybe I will try to force myself for trainings any day to archive my goals. I have this issue only with long fasts (like 24-hours). I don’t want to decide each day which is in priority: fasting or trainings, I want to combine the routine.
I must like fasting because i do it accidentally. I don't skip days of eating, but much of the time, I have a meal around 1 PM and don't eat until the next day. It happens frequently! Have a great day.
Moderation is the key...since Time immemorial my people have been intermittent fasting as part of our lives...we do not overdo it..we use it as the body can use it. Respect your body don't Abuse it or it Will Turn on you. Common sense. ..Body builders make the Same Mistake..pain is Not gain...pain is a sign Something is Wrong.
I've watched a few of your other videos Thomas but this one today rang to me. I've been doing IF since January 1st of this year and so far have lost 55 lbs. I'm 55 years old and have not been this 'light' since I can't remember when. I'm trying to do more core and muscle training lately. My question to you is do you use protein shakes in you eating window, I've heard from others that say it's better to have something more solid. I'd love to hear your view on this.
I don't stop because it actually works. Other than dropping weight, intermittent fasting can kill junk food craving, fixes various issues (fatty liver, insulin resistance, and even certain cancer), and training discipline.
I like doing 16+ hours fast 2 to 3 times a week and drinking green tea and other types of tea make fasting easier. After about 12 hours I have no appetite and I have to actually plan to eat after 16 hours because of a lack of appetite, drinking tea is a great aid to helping me get to that point. Black coffee is also good but green tea is the best for me
Im relatively new to fasting, Been a monk fast or something close for about 4 months now. Every thursday nigth I stop eating and then have my next meal saturday morning. sometimes its 34 hours sometimes its closer to 40. I have a few questions for anybody that might know on some supplements I used to take that I am starting to take again. Basically, I was wondering if Shilajit, yohimbine, and aswhaganda break a fast. I can just take one day off if they do and have not taken them really during fasts up until this point. Usually, I just have Coffee with cinnamon and cayenne and then water/water with Himalayan salt. Another question is should I work with my dr to check my levels during fasting? My main focus in fasting is autophagy so I do not want to do anything that will break this.
Intermitent Fasting is just a tool to manage caloric balance. If it makes it easier for the person to stay in their calorie target, then its a great option.
I find if u lift heavy and do intense exercising...fasting and low carb wont help u much in the gym...so I still fast but I have some carbs before and after the gym...recovery with low carbs and working out fasted eventually catches up and your workouts will suffer...cortisol will be high and test will be lower...fasting is good though and still do it
Help me out internet. I read all these comments about how much you all love fasting. I've do it once a week and it is incredibly difficult. I can barely reach 16 hrs. I've tried both fast in the morning and not eating dinner and trying to sleep and eating breakfast. All I think about is food. I seem to never get the mental clarity that's talked about. What is the secret?
