I've given myself horrible fits of rage by missing out on some really cool guitars by not following this rule before... If you see a guitar you want get listed at a great price and it has well over 4 offers within MINTUES of it being listed...IGNORE the Make an Offer button and just buy it! When a seller gets bombarded with offers like that, they usually don't respond to them until they get an offer they like or they wait it out to see if someone will pay full asking price. Be the Shark... Strike first! Buy it Now! Trying to save $50 isn't worth it haha
That is the story of how I stumbled upon this 1987 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop. I don't normally buy repaired guitars, but I thought this one worked out well for this TradeTuesday series so we can get tradetuesday wrapped up.

Could you do a video on your personal "never sell" guitars?
@ttdmcneal

I know for a fact that the Old Glory LP that was gifted to Trogly by Jared James Nichols himself would definitely be in that video. Also if Trogly was able to get a hold on a Basalt Blue LP Deluxe and a LP Spotlight Special without monetary troubles you would certainly see those in the video as well.

You do know the Custom Shops were all made on the Komo 4 headed CNC mill with 4 auxiliary heads mounted on the 4 main heads. That was a brand new machine in November 93 that was brought to Nashville. Only 1 man ran that machine, the fretboards, and most of the necks from November 93 thru 94. That man was me. I was a CNC machinist and hired by Henry J at a Blues Show Gibson sponsored in Printers Alley in early November 93. It was a chance meeting. We sat next to each other in the balcony area. He heard me and my friend talking shop. He gave me his card and the rest is history. I programmed the machine and built all the original fixtures. Custom shop got credit for my attention to detail and truth be known all the guitars of that time period came off the machine within one hair width or .002 of an inch of each other. They were, in my opinion, the best guitars Gibson ever produced and I made 100,000 of them in that period. Later...

michael ancell damn that's awesome! except for the stolen ones. I've had drums stolen before, even my snare. It's crushing. I worked briefly for PRS back in the mid 90's. I was just a lowly neck sander, but my bench was right across from the custom inlay and a custom body guy so I got to see some really cool stuff created. As a drummer though, it was kind of hard to really love the job so I left because I figured some guitar player would appreciate the job way more than I and my band started gigging more.

I was given a 1979 epiphone genesis for my 17th birthday in 1981, my friend leaned the guitar instead of returning it to the stand. The guitar fell moments later and broke the neck completely off. I had the neck glued back on and to this day it plays like it never happened , however the repair crack was noticable but smooth. So don't be afraid to buy the gold top.

Tough look on the glare in the Reverb photo. You can see it but especially when you know it's there. Sellers can be crafty with angles and light and claim they did provide a photo. I bought an old Ovation Magnum bass that came with a cracked head thru the G peg which, if you knew it was there, could be seen in the angled photo. His ad said "No cracks, No breaks, No monkey business". He tried to blame me but in the end allowed my return. I trust Reverb's backing more the Ebay gotta say. Bought a different one in awesome shape.

Good players guitar. I can tell you exactly what happened to the top, it was a cheap D'Addario (as soon as you see D'Addario you know it going to be shite) A stand, one with out a neck cradle, and fell forward being caught by the bits sticking up in the stand. You used to see that a lot before people stopped using them.

@corneliuscrewe8165
@corneliuscrewe8165 4 года назад
I don’t know exactly why, but there has always been a stigma surrounding guitars that have had headstock repairs, which in many cases is ridiculous. A properly repaired headstock break should be stronger than any undamaged mahogany Gibson neck ever was. Part of it, i’m sure, stems from the collector’s market. A pristine example of anything almost always goes for more than one with wear/damage. Part of it stems from the guitars that have had really poorly repaired headstock breaks, and I’ve seen some doozies. However, I’ve seen some amazing repairs on guitars you would swear were ruined forever. It all depends on the skill of the repairman. Put it this way, would you say no to Jimmy Page’s Number 1? It’s headstock has definitely repaired.

Hey there, nice Les Paul. You got the Serial Number and year wrong. What you've got there is a 57 Gold Top reissue made in 2000 and it's the 202 Instrument of this type produced in 2000. Heeres what Gibson says. Gibson Custom 1952-1960 Les Paul, Explorer, Flying V, and Futura reissues (since late 1992): M YRRR or MYRRRR M is the model year being reissued Y is the production year RRR(R) indicates the guitar's place production for that year. NOTE: This number includes all models for a particular reissue year - so, for example, a 1958 Reissue serial number may include '58 Reissue LP Standard and '58 Explorer production. Example: 7 5123 is the 123rd 1957 reissue model produced in 2005.

Sugar Kitty your not factoring in that it’s a 57 RI not just an 87 standard. He tells you what they are selling for without the repair (on the low end twice as much as he paid) so not too bad. It’s a 57 RI for $1300, look around and you will see what they’re going for.

I think you may need to check the history of Gibson Les Pauls. I remember hearing something about the 80s and headstocks, so maybe it isn’t a repair. You can and should contact Gibson.

@@Trog Do you happen to know what they changed temporarily about the headstock during the 80s to change it back to before 80s style headstock after that? I heard something somewhere sometime and I think you’re a bit more knowledgeable.

If I ever sell a guitar on line, I'll gizz all over it before I ship it, what a black light surprise that will be for the buyer.

Now call me silly but it doesn't make much sense to me to buy something, make a video about it then resell it on the same platform you bought it at and ask for $500 more than what you paid lol. But you know what you're doing Austin, no there is no sarcasm meant in that statement, you seem to really have a good business mind and obviously you feel comfortable doing it this way. Is it just me or does this one seem to be more yellow than gold? It's more along the lines of a lemon yellow than a gold top , to me anyway.

Been watching for a few months now, just letting you know you've been measuring with the calipers wrong, you're getting a higher reading due to not using the 'sharpened edge'. Also you sound a bit off, hope all is well :)
@Riverdeepnwide
@Riverdeepnwide 4 года назад
Measuring across concave surfaces with the wider "flats" of a caliper can cause an increasing read error proportional to the decrease in the radius of concavity. The top and bottom surfaces of a guitar neck being convex however present no difference in reading between wider or thinner caliper surfaces. The upper and lower planes of the neck being angled do require the user to be aware of the actively measuring caliper edge position but again no difference between wider and thinner surfaces. This is splitting hairs of course where I think Trogly's intention is to simply give us a pretty good idea of the neck size. Ahhhh good tools are a wonderful thing to work with.
