Everyone wants to be an influencer

I remember reading a tweet a while ago saying “social media used to be this place where the kids who didn’t fit in could find community but then the popular kids figured out you could make money from it” and it feels so true 😢

Not everyone has the charisma or actual influence to reach to people in a genuine way

Social media is just a collection of echo chambers - even musicians aren't really accessing superstar status anymore (except maybe Tyla) . Its really hard to break through all the noise

tik tok has also ruined the perception of this art. Its so easy for people to blow up now without putting years of work like how many have on RU-vid. You should make a video of how tik tok has ruined a lot of things. coz it has also ruined music, nobody wants to invest into making the art and being part of a group of people, as you're stating; makeup, vlog, comedy. no one is putting in the effort because its so easy to get clicks on tik tok so being an influencer or making content is now taken for granted and looked at as a lottery ticket because that's how much tik tok is and unfortunately, all this apps have now basically created that environment, even for people that may not want to be content creators. I hope I made sense.

I also think that while ordinary hardworking everyday young people can work full time, long hours, but can barely afford rent with flatmates. While influencers online are “decorate my second bathroom with me” from a go-on-holiday get-sent-free-stuff job. That’s simplifying it I know, but the housing crisis and cost of living crisis really pushes it home. I went to Law school and could not get a training contract or a paralegal job anywhere. Influencing is very competitive. It's very hard to stand out.

Even though this is different from your regular videos I still enjoyed watching it. I do agree with your points especially about just waking up and saying you want to be an influencer without thinking about influencing them to do what. I get it lol. I will say authenticity has become an aesthetic so now we don't even know if they are really authentic. 😅

A bit out of context; I feel like organizations choosing influencers to model their brands need to be more careful or else they’d be in more of a loss than profit. For example if an android company gives an influencer a phone to model and the influencer doesn’t consistently use the phone but just for the ad, how do they expect people to buy the phone?? The influencer isn’t even convinced themselves 😭🤣 ( this could be a video idea as well )

Love this video❤ I think this is why as someone that wants to start with content creation, I never liked the idea of “just start” Yes my market research and my quest to knowing why I want to create content should not hold me back and serve as procrastination but it is still an important step for me! Now I feel so much more at ease knowing my “why, who and where” because I feel a sense of direction. I am so excited to start this journey ✨

old school youtube used to have vedif and veda and vlogmas, which have died off. there were whole months when the original creators on here would upload everyday, by the end you could tell they were tired af, but it was so good for builiding a connection with the audience because you so much of them in a short span that it became abnormal to not know what they were up to.

Definitely tired of everyone pushing a product - but times have changed. Social media or content creation appears to be a big ticket item. Whilst some do it for fun or a non-monetary intent, the monetary aspect has become a big reason to enter the field. So it feels really loud, everyone is suddenly an expert in a thing and wants to inform, influence etc. it’s a one way conversation and there’s a lot of people simply imitating others, which is bound to happen - imitation being a great way to learn a new thing as well as we’re all influenced by the information we consume. Anything good, all will hop on. Though I do miss the days the OG days, it felt like slow content as they’d upload a RU-vid video periodically rather than a reel on Tuesday, long form video Thursday and a live on Sunday. The appetite of the audience these days has grown and those creating the content have also grown the meet the demand

I feel like this is a never seen before influencer boom to the point where ‘influencers’ will cease to be special nor important. When something becomes too accessible it looses its value and in this case it’s the title & category of what entails influencing, cause honestly whose really being influenced by these influencers anymore? It’s like how computers were super special and exclusive when they came out and now everyone has them. Are they still important, yes. Do they have a use case? Yes . Do they have a wow factor anymore? No.

I went to speak to some 3rd graders and a few of them said they wanted to be RU-vidrs / gamers

I want to be a creator but because I like making videos but yea there isn’t much authenticity in content creation anymore especially on TikTok

You're so right. Started my RU-vid about 6 months ago and told myself I will be focused on community building and not just numbers. Some influencers have millions of followers and little engagement.

🎯 Great video. Will definitely be sending this to a couple people I know, lol my older nieces and nephews for sure! I think one of the things a lot of people don't consider is if they genuinely like their own content. As in, if you came across your own page/channel, would you follow? My thing is, make the type of content that you would actually like to watch and/or find helpful yourself. In the beginning, at least, you should just enjoy making whatever it is that you make -- don't worry about numbers. As a consumer, it's mostly always obvious when someone is half-arsing their content. I always laugh when someone starts and their fist ever video is a "get to know me". Like, you have made anything that's made me desire to know you quite yet!

Most of the reasons why people want to be content creators and influencers is for the money and nothing else. They want a bunch of money for doing nothing. They don't care about anything else but being rich. That's why they do it. Easy way to get rich without having to do a single thing.

so funny you posted this today and i decided today is day 1 of me trying to become an influencer. ive already figured out my why after years so im excited to get started, wish me luck (or don't!)

The sad thing is that it has really watered down real influence - there are people who can use platforms like these to honour their gifts and purpose. Really curious to see how this space continues to blow up.

I feel like the key issue is that influencing is arguably very similar to the acting and music world. You have actors like Sydney Sweeney, Ayo Edebiri, Jacob Elordi, Barry Keogan and Madelyn Cline who came from regular lives and became massive movie stars in the last 5 years. And people think they can replicate that. Similarly, Ice Spice, Doja, Pink Pantheress, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Latto they are all people who had regular lives with no connections but made it big. People think they can do it to but at the end of the day a lot of it is luck. It’s not about hard work. There’s likely hundreds of more talented actors and musicians. Some people just are more lucky and everyone likes to believe that people is them. That’s why they get disappointed cause everyone can’t be famous. TikTok had over 200 million followers in the USA alone and I bet half of them think they’ll be sat at the Met Gala in the next 5 years. Realistically it’ll only likely be 50 of them at most. And even then, influencing is so capricious that TikTok will probably be irrelevant and the next app will be around in 5 years time!

I’m also interested in the ethical side of influencing… i always wonder how many influencers think about the very real impact they’re having on real people’s lives for better or for worse? There’s a duty of care that i think is sorely neglected only because this isn’t a regulated or formal industry (which of course has its own pros too). With great power etc!

absolutely agree about your point of the lack of visibility of the work teachers do behind the scenes. ive graduated last year with a degree in math education, just about to start as a TA. but man, ive been rusty & out of practice for a while - i feel like i'm learning how to learn again. building discipline and a structure for your daily routines or goals is so important. and its equally important for kids to know that developing skills requires discipline & time. like you said, people want the cheat code. i never thought teaching would be easy, but man its so comforting seeing the practice done by people who are dedicated to their craft. also why i loved the show the bear so much.
