Everyone Was WRONG About The 2022 Subaru WRX

When the latest generation of the Subaru WRX was unveiled, it was met with a lot of not so great feedback from the community. However, as dyno results are starting to come out with the release of the COBB Pro Tuning software, it might have some people changing their opinions. What are your thoughts?

Overall, I'm hopeful for it! Anything can happen though lol. I've been wanting to drive one but here in SD they're pretty much non-existent. The only one was bought by my local dealer, driven and listed used for 8k over MSRP 😮‍💨

Most people in the subaru community already knew the FA24 was solid. Prime Motoring made 550 almost 3 years ago with one out of an Ascent. Stimikey just made 430/480 with intake, exhaust, e50 just the other day as well with stock turbo and is running bottom 11s getting close to 10s in the 1/4

BUT.... you will NEED to upgrade the brakes, and if you are pushing power the trans for sure. Those are what 10k+ to get done. I'm sure it will be an awesome tuner car in the future, but for now, I don't think it yet makes sense.
@chozen_juan

No.. most people in the subaru community know that this thing is an absolute turd. Its one of the worst looking subarus of all time that literally nobody asked for. A lot of the EJs were junk and while the FA20s were definitely a better platform they needed too much money to become anything worth while. Sure they can be quick if you dump enough money into them but most of the people on Nasioc, IWSTi, and Reddit started to notice subarus are just not on par with the competition in the price range and they haven't been for at least a decade.
@matthewwain9958

@@chozen_juan The only one's that come close to making sense are the base trim and maybe the premium. 31k to 33k is it? All the others are just banana's pricing for a regular WRX given what you do NOT get. I really like the eyesight stuff in my wife's outback wilderness, but for the WRX... it's just a money suck that could have been used on making it a better drivers car.

I’ve been working with one of the well known FA tuners since Accesstuner added support for the FA24. Here’s where we’re at with it: $3500 for intake, downpipe, intercooler and Accessport + tuning fees = 375whp/400ftlbs on e40. Fuel cut remains at 6100rpm. You really need to stop at that power level and rpm to protect the transmission, so those numbers are what owners can expect if they want to start modding today. The transmission is the same one used in the VA chassis so it’s a known variable and no one is going to figure out a way to make it magically hold more torque reliably. The next step will be someone doing a >$10k STI transmission swap to see if it fits. If it does, we’re off to the races with big turbos, fuel system upgrades, methanol and full e85 to see how far we can push the FA24 before it needs upgraded internals. Like you said in this video, things will be very interesting a year from now. It’s just important for everyone to keep in mind that a very expensive transmission upgrade is going to be necessary before these cars can make big boy power.
@akagels
@akagels Год назад
Thanks for the insight! I figured there would be something that would eventually limit the increased power getting to the ground l, whether that be the transmission, clutch, axles, etc. Interested to see if the STI transmission can be swapped over.

Prime Motoring explored the FA24 a few years ago when it came out in the Ascent. They transplanted it into a crosstrek with an STI driveline, did full bolts ons with an FP Blue and made near 700whp before the rods snapped. These motors are more than capable.

I think the FA 24 is going to be a good motor I still don’t like the new GEN WRXS and as far as making power I’m sure the motor can handle it but the transmission and driveline cannot being it’s the same drive line from the older GEN WRX my 2019 WRX has FBO FA 20 with a complete STI drivetrain swap and makes great power and if I ever wanted to go for more in the future I have already future proofed my car with the STI drivetrain swap it don’t matter how much power a motor can put down if the drivetrain can’t handle the power and you can’t make reliable power over time most people buying these cars are regular joes doing race car stuff all I can say is make sure you got about $15k set aside for when the motor does go boom boom pushing all that torque cuz SUBARU OF AMERICA is not going to honor that warranty you voided when you wanted to do all that race car stuff to your daily driver, I love Subarus exp. The WRX/STI PLATFORM but these cars from factory were not built to make big power from factory can you do it ? Sure … is it fun he’ll yes , should you push your car to its limitations? Exp. A factory block with factory internals probably not if you can’t afford to replace the motor you just voided your warranty on we all don’t know what the future holds BUT if your going to PLAY make sure your ready to PAY! cuz it won’t be anyone’s fault but your own if you push the car to it limits and it goes BOOMBOOM it’s all fun while we are going fast but once it blows we blame the car knowing damn well the stock block and drivetrain couldn’t handle all the power.

Prime motoring hit 500+awhp out of the ascent fa24 in their crosstrek before the wrx release. Think they did 30+ wot pulls on the dyno at that power. And have done well with their wrx.

Yeah. Good point . Probly saving it for sti if they are even making one for this.. sti Of this model will be worth it but this Wrx besides having an all wheel drive is just another sedan..

@@matthewwain9958 lol you won’t find one. Besides our dinosaur ej engine which I will advice you to monitor your oil level pretty much weekly is yeah can’t find one either.. your 2018 sti is far superior in parts and build quality in my opinion.. keep that sweet 2018 sti you won’t regret it.. I drive a 14 sti stage 2 and 2021 Tacoma trd. I’d rather get the outback wild edition ? Over this . Not hating on the new wrx just can’t get into it. My buddy has the silver 2023? Wrx gt .. recaro and interior is nice and nothing about it told me I gots to have this wrx.. felt just like any other sedan 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@noxnyc23 I bought my wife the 2022 Outback Wilderness, and honestly, I think it's fantastic. Pulls like a mule all the while being on regular gas, and handles pretty darn well given the tires, height and it's intended use case. Had Subaru put better brakes on the GT and maybe some other bits, it might have been viable... but 44k for a CVT ... not cool. Should have been the manual with the STI 6 speed for that price. And yes... I would quite happily buy another Wilderness, even with it's questionable looks lol.

I wouldn't say people were wrong about the 2022 model besides the plastic that's going to fade out but that's easily resolved with a little bit of paint. I would say the biggest complaint about the 2022 models was the lack of the true STI touch. Slapping wings and lip kits does not define it as an STI entirely. The whole world was hoping for a true tuned 400 horsepower STI, possibly completed with a bigger turbo that doesn't instantly spool and fall on its face on the top end, which it does.

Is anyone actually surprised that the FA24 is capable of a lot more power than the previous engine? It's a bigger engine with less factory boost, so of course there's room to grow.

Had a first run of the previous 2.0L WRX generation. Extremely disappointed, bad electric and brake failures in the winter. Got an '18 WRX STI (tuned) instead and couldnt be happier. I won't support anymore bad business decisions from Subaru. FYSA the STI is undriveable in 1-2nd gear without a Cobb tune. Still miss my 2013 WRX Hatch...

As a previous gen owner, all I wanted was for a new STI to come out. Apparently, subaru has been losing a lot of money and will instead focus on electrification. The new WRX isn't much of an upgrade over the previous gen with the 2022 being heavier and (slower?) I intentionally saved money for a new STi. Big disappointment

Thats all great an all, but that transmission is a weak link in the chain that is a known problem. People gonna be blowing cases left and right from that torque.. they are still ugly, and the interior sucks... but its good that the ascent motor is doing well in the wrx

Don't like the WRX? Try the BRZ. How many small car companies have two sports cars? I like my old 2013 Subaru Legacy, now with 130,000 miles on it. Suspension needed replacing the last 10,000 miles but that is about it. Oh, and the Master Brake Cylinder failed at 118,000 miles. Before that, nothing. So long lasting cars that are good in the snow in mountains are what I like.
