Oh dear, I can't believe I have been here for two hours or more, watching the video and reading comments with awesome ideas. I couldn't go back to sleep so here I am 🤣 God bless you all! ❤️
I’ve made similar luminaries for all different seasons and my tip or hack is to grab a solar light (that come with a stake to go into the ground) at Dollar Tree. Remove the top part so you just have the round solar panel with the attached light and optional the clear frame that’s around the actual light. Place into the can before attaching the handle. Once finished hang anywhere the sun touches the panel. It will light up beautifully and automatically at night. Note* I typically keep the clear frame attached so it gives the light and solar panel height. Helps with the solar panel get more sun and the light placement is more ideal as it’s more centred inside the can highlighting the pattern. But definitely beautiful either way. Hope this helps 😊 and thank you for sharing this super cute, easy and fun way of upcycling “trash” into luminary treasure. ❤️ from Shannon in Canada 🇨🇦
@@kathyking5372 I only have pictures of the ones I made for Halloween but don’t know how to post them on here unfortunately. If you know how to please let me know. But I used 2 large coffee cans painted black with TRICK on one and TREAT on the other. Then a regular sized can painted black with the word OR, to go in between the larger cans. We used these instead of buying pumpkins. Worked great!
I have done something similar with paint cans, they already have handles. I used stencil premade patterns as a punch guide, then I wired mine with a small bulb like a night light bulb. Replaced the lid and then you can hang them or sit them on the ground whatever you like.
Lol I watched this and immediately thought the “freezing cans” part was not necessary, however the frozen drinks in a cold can looks pleasing for summer time 🌞
I think the freezing water in the cans is so they don't bend or warp when you're punching or drilling the holes of your design I'd put the frozen cans in a vise to hold them still & steady while punching & drilling my design
80s here. Also, a friend of mine bought those aluminum foil jelly roll pans, cut the backs out, punched hole designs, and put them up as a backsplash! Never would have guessed what it was made from.
I would have thought she was going to insert some flowers or flower petals (to look pretty) and mini licour/ mini champagne bottles, to keep the cold, just gave me a GREAT IDEA for bridal shower. 😉😊
Jute is very cute if you're using electric candles; however, if you plan on using tea lights you may want to use wire for the handle. That's what I do, as the inside becomes quite hot & spontaneous combustion is a real thing~ Those little knots hanging on the inside could catch fire very easily, as well as the "handle".
My dad made wooden candle holders for Christmas, and freaked out on me, for telling him, that he could kill those, he gave them to. 100% pure narcissist scumbag..
Back in the day - you could buy large versions of these with one-shaped tops. There were many holes punched with differently shaped hole punches. Candle(s) placed inside would flicker, and the flickering would cause rippling light patterns on the walls and ceiling. Very trippy. Even more so when you blow a lungful of smoke over them, and the rays illuminate the smoke in a 3D mandala. : )
This would be adorable as a tin can garland!!! Paint each can a different color according to the holiday! Easter .. pastel colors. Halloween...orange, black and white. Love this idea! TFS!!!
For sure! Those shorty little, flat sided, mushroom cans with the green label and white/red brand title are SO cute on a garland. I take the label off. And I’m sure you could use any flat sided can. I used to have some I made in my home before I moved to Alaska. But, as I was hanging them, I realized they looked so cute vertically so I only hung them with one hook! I ended up wrapping some silk foliage vines around the line I strung them from. Later, I added Christmas lights around the vines and put little 2” photos in front of the punchline of every other lantern. It made the photo glow a little from behind. Anyways, the flat sided can made it really easy to decorate them through the changes of my life. 🥰
I've been doing this for years. At my son's graduation party spray painted them the schools colors with the schools letters as well. That was in 2011 that was my biggest project. Also do for holidays.
Patio lights for the summer! Yay! I'm pulling my empty cans out of my recycling box right now. I love the reminder about how to make these lanterns and also the decorating ideas. Now I have a new project to get ready for summer. Since I will probably use a hammer and nail to punch the holes, stabilizing with the ice is a good idea.
Draw the pattern you intend to “punch” before you freeze the can and the frosting won’t be a problem. You can also tape a paper design to the can and punch around the outline to make silhouettes of your loved ones or fav music artists. I like to use tin snips to cut a cute design at the top and bottom of my cans. This craft can get as elaborate as you can. It’s an easy fun way to shine beauty into your life. I can’t wait to make more!!! 🥳🥳🥳 Thanks for sharing your lanterns!! I forgot about this project. I’m really excited to punch flowers and hang them (on MayDay) on door knobs of people I don’t know. My children and I love celebrating Mayday 🥰. ~Sheeara, Alaska
@@Mrs.VonChin thank you 🥰. Just an added technique. Building on each other’s ideas and projects is my favorite part of art.🥳 I get the ink off with the aerosol version of “scrubbing bubbles.” I’m sure there are many cleaners that work. I just happened to have that when I made them.
Ahaaaa, thanks for your idea! I'll get a paper design of a Seahorse, a Starfish or any beach theme 🐚 🦀🐬... A butterfly 🦋 would be pretty too for a garden.
@@mariamercy7317 🥰🥰🥰 Thank you. Seriously. I love in Alaska and it can get a little quiet. Lol I feel really blessed that you took the time to share your ideas with me too. I have 5 kids and I’ve built my life by selling skincare and makeup. There’s just something special to me when we take what we’re living with and share how to make it exciting again. It’s the middle of the night… everyone is sleeping and I have a big stupid grin because I’m getting garden ideas for the cans I washed. Lol Isn’t it funny the way we inspire one another. I hope you’re about to have a really good day. You made my evening. ~Sheeara, Alaska
@@sheeara You put a great big smile on my face 😄 To think you replied at this your time. I have been here since around 4am and it's 7am in Florida. 😅 Alaska is in my Bucket List 🪣 Wow, so you're into skincare products and have small children. Great for you! You are BLESSED indeed and bless others! P.S. Happy to know I made your day. I think I'll go for my second nap. Lol... Till soon. Stay richly blessed!
That's a great idea, it makes it easier to put holes into the cans without causing damage. I wonder if this icy idea would work with the more fragile aluminum soda/beer cans? Aluminum cans dent so easily and I'd think the ice would prevent that when we want to put holes into it.
They are cute to make for Halloween too. I first learned this back in the early 90's from Martha Stewart - I loved all her vintage Halloween ideas they are all STILL amazing!
About 12 years ago I stopped in at my favorite thrift store and some had just donated a ton of Martha Stewart mags - including Christmas issues. I bought them all and am glad I did because those were the good years.
I've made these...so cute. I love the copper one. Lining them up somewhere with a name, or the seasons are neat too. You can also make garlands with them for Christmas or other holidays. Yours are pretty!
I’ll be honest. I’m jealous. This got over a million views. If I were to prove to you right now that the ice was unnecessary, I would get 500 views at best. Not sure how you pulled this is off, but I admire it all the same.
When you misread “lighting” 💡 for “lightening.” ⚡️ 😂 Got myself so confused there for a minute....or five. 😂 Love the idea of recycling cans for the garden! 😍😍😍
Go to a restaurant and ask when they do prep for their food. This varies from location to location. Get larger cans and have fun doing tiki torch tops, Halloween sidewalk lights, and even better, Christmas lights that fit your esthetic. You can use Sterno chafing dish fuels that burn out fast but the light is brilliant. Don't forget the can lids, these can be arched and reattached to make a safety lid. Use two holes for each low end and run wire in to attach the lid. These get really hot so use proper safety and care.
Instead of having the towel flat before punching, scrunch each side towards the can and it will not roll. Nice reminder to repurpose cans for other uses.
CoolIdea BTW the Punch you used in the video is actually a NailSetting Tool the small pointy end is Hardened which makes it fine for doing this Project i’ve been a Outdoor Enthusiast for many years and that includes Boating ,Backpacking , and other ways of Camping in thecWilderness i usually bend wire Coat hangers to make a Handle on TinCans i carry in my Backpack to heat up Water on smallCamfires that i use for MealPreparation, Instant Hot Cocoa , and Hobo Coffee the small cans like Soup or Vegetable sized ones with a Tea Candle will make a cheap easy Lantern that doesn’t blow out super easy i’ve even use them to hang above a small Table at nighttime on my boat to eat a late meal under the altars it creates. just enough light to see what you are doing and the ridged Coat hanger handle makes it easy to hang using Clothespins , Spring Clamps ,or even a Bungee Cord for my Small Hiking tents i install Grommets on inside fabric the manufacturers leave at the seams of the tent Fabric and that’s how i will hang my “homemade”:Lanterns
I think you might want to use wire instead of twine in order to avoid burning down your front porch. A few weeks ago I drilled assorted size holes in four cans to slide over the LED lightbulbs of my bathroom fixture. I recommend a pointed awl instead of a blunt nail set for starting the holes. That way you can forget about the freezing part.
I remember these as a child. And I remember also teaching my boys …. But we used a nails and hammer. Or a punch. It’s interesting to see this stuff coming through RU-vid after 50 years
I have used a fluffy folded towel to put my frozen can on. The towel will create a type of cradle to hold the can in place while hammering. Also if you do this in summer or a warm house it will catch any and all melted water. I have done this project with 5th graders as the youngest I would go.
Get an empty 5 gallon paint bucket. Place a smaller bucket inside, then fill the space between the buckets with water. Place the bucket outside in freezing weather. After the water has frozen, gently place the paint bucket upside down and jiggle until the ice "bucket" releases. A votive candle or regular candle can be set at the bottom of the ice bucket. These ice buckets placed alongside a sidewalk or driveway glow beautifully at night!
@@believe5922 thank you. I live in Alaska and during the winter months, these giant "luminaries" stay frozen a long time. I saw an entire driveway lined with them on both sides (4 per side). It was beautiful!
Yes I lived up Hatchers Pass Alaska. (Willow, AK) and the neighbors had their driveways lit with the frozen ice luminaries made with the large and smaller bucket for a mold. The would burn all night in the winter and those were very very long nights! Loved the luminaries and loved Alaska!
My thought, personally, is a thin aluminum can/s filled with ice "might" not bend inward (cave inward) or side dent inward when drilling a hole or tapping a hole into the sides????
Cute idea. I've seen people using bags of beans to hold the can still for the punching/drilling part. The freezing is a great idea to prevent crushing the can or hurting yourself. Two questions: 1) why paint the inside of the punched design, and 2) if I painted the inside of the can, would it still be safe for a lighted tea light candle?
This is such a cool idea. I would’ve never thought of it. I’m not that artistic, I paint but and crochet but that’s about as far as I go. Everybody has such good ideas. I’m gonna try it this next summer. Winter just started and I might do some now! Thank you so much everyone😊
It keeps the can HARD so you can make the holes without bending the can. My question is what is the white paint for? I would just leave the whole can the same color of spray paint.
@@valfletcher9285 I made those a zillion years ago in Girl Scouts. You don’t need the ice. We called them trash yard lights. Because we made them out of trash.
Thank you very much, ma’am! Awesome idea for keeping the kids from being a better shape when a person wants to make cuts or punch holes in them. Adds absolutely nothing to the cost of the project, While adding all sorts of quality. :-)
Fun fact, Gold miners made lanterns like this in a similar way using sheets of thin metal in California. I learned how to do this on a field trip in the 3rd grade.
Uhhhhh, cute. I love beach stuff. I'll paint the can white or a shade of blue and try to outline a Seashell or Seahorse or maybe even a Margaritaville Parrot 🐦 😍
To help keep it steady while making holes(for accident prone people like myself that literally hit my thumb like Homer Simpson at least half the time) roll up two opposite ends of towel evenly, then turn over (so the towel doesn't unroll) put the can on top, shouldn't roll or move as easily. Or use a shoe. I have yet to try either of these, they are just theories I'll try and remember if I ever need them
