Okay, so I let the notes app auto-fill the video title. Not bad! In reality, it is much better than fine. ‪@e_e_‬

I know you don’t really listen to the older stuff when you just discover a band, but this time I really think you could love their earlier work. « Get To Heaven » is an incredible pop rock album loneliness, politics and terrorism. But their first two albums « Arc » and « Man Alive » are also amazing, even though they kind of live in the shadows of Get To Heaven. I personally prefer them over the latter. As they release more and more albums I’m starting to realise that they might be my favorite band of all time, alongside Radiohead (yes they’re that good)

I have the exact same opinions, I relate to this so much its actually bewildering. Some of their more unknown stuff, like crisis over, really resonates with me. Personally I discovered EE before Radiohead, and as you said I believe that they're as good as Radiohead.

On the point of are these guys popular in the UK: kind of? Their 2015 album Get To Heaven was everywhere here, especially the tracks Distant Past and Regret which hit the radio. Since then, they’ve maintained a weird middle ground between cult band and mainstream mainstay, but this album seems to be a bit of an upwards spike for them (managed to get #4 on the charts, only beaten by Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran and Kendrick Lamar!)

Found this as an EE fan and subscribed, love how matter of fact you are about everything and you explain why you mean what you mean perfectly. Well played sir

YESSSSSS thank you, this is one of my absolute favorite albums of this year and this was a fantastic analysis. Quick note: you are pretty much spot on with the characters, they all represent something of Jonathan Higgs. Higgs himself said that Kevin represents a part of his childhood that feels lost, and one that he strives to regain, which is why Kevin's Car feels so comfortable. There's really no bs with this band, not a lot of crazy easter eggs with all of those names and stuff like that, it's actually very introspective

Wow, wow brilliant review! I really think Jon (lead singer) would like this, its almost as if you've completely torn apart the album and put it back together, analysing every component and possibility. I really think you should listen to Get To Heaven (their 3rd record), its their most popular record, also highlighting very large issues which I won't spoil! Then you have their sophomore album 'Arc' from 2013, which looks more directly into Jon's mind and his depression along with other things. Overall, Raw Data Feel does not in any way paint a picture for what this band is; every album is a turn in another direction, where they show-off their skills in all aspects of music making. I really do think Everything Everything are the best Art Rock/Pop band from 2010 onward as all six albums deliver a different recipe of almost perfection. Thanks again for this review, was a joy to watch

So happy to see you cover this album. It's easily one of my favourite albums of the year and one of Everything Everything's best overall. If you want another album from them similar to this one, then you need to check out "Get to Heaven". It's a lot darker and more confrontational lyrically but musically it's just as vibrant and fun. It's also their most critically acclaimed album as well so it's recommended listening either way.

Pitchfork gave this fun and unique pop masterwork a dazzling 4.8 out of 10. This is not a joke. They actually hate this band. It’s incredibly infuriating.

Yeah, I was looking for reviews for this album and saw this one, I was like, how is that possible? Everything EE makes is so much better than most popular music in my opinion that its just insane.

not to mention they misquoted lyrics from the record in an attempt to label them as nonsense (which, to an even more absurd extent, the lyric being criticized was “can you imagine it? the escalator breathing in a hydra howl” despite being such an obvious metaphor for an escalator still moving whilst on fire written in a song about a mall being set on fire)

Interesting that you mention the potential influence of Snow Crash on Pizza Boy, as "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind", which was the inspiration for Everything Everything's last album (Reanimator), was apparently a major influence on that book.

Wait… are you serious? That book played a MAJOR role in my early life.

@joeybaxter8707 2 года назад
@@professorskye yep!! Jon Higgs talks about it a lot in interviews from the last album cycle. “In Birdsong” is a song explicitly about the bicameral mind concept but references are littered across that album.

Loved this review back when you posted it, it’s what introduced me to your content. Everything Everything just dropped a new single “Cold Reactor” for their upcoming album Mountainhead! I’d love it if you had the chance to check it out. The album drops on March 1st.

Hi there! 'preciate the defense of Genius and those reddit nerds because I am absolutely That Person. And yes, I think I am about ten years younger than you. This review was interesting and you found things that I hadn't quite put together yet. I liked your calling bullshit on the AI thing. I think that was kind of a gimmick and a Trojan horse, and I mean that in a good way. It's about obscuring things. I think you hit the nail right on the head when you said that the music gives you that vague familiar-but-can't-quite-place-it feeling that AI gives you. Like that "name one object in this picture" meme from a few years ago, which I think was actually my first experience seeing an AI-generated image. I think the word you meant when calling Metroland Is Burning almost like a satire of '80s pop was that it's a musical pastiche. It's that thing Weird Al does when he doesn't do a "parody" of a single song but he'll make a song in the style of an artist. I was kind of surprised that you saw that and recognized it as subversive in songs like Metroland, I Want A Love Like This, and Bad Friday but skimmed over Shark Week. There's a lot going on in that one that goes way back into their older stuff but I get a sense that there's more to it than that. I couldn't tell you why though. You blew my mind when you pointed out the aquatic theme though! I had kind of seen a connection between leviathan, sharks, and a lamprey as being scary sea animals/monsters but you pointing out that it's water just helped me make a couple of other parallels too. Thanks for giving me a whole new layer to ponder! I'm intrigued by this "Snow Crash." Wikipedia says it was heavily influenced by Julian Jaynes' "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind", which is EXACTLY what EE's last album was inspired by! That's awesome! I think you've solved the Pizza Boy mystery! I know everybody is recommending Get To Heaven and you should definitely listen to that and every single thing they've ever done, but because of the things you said about "sex robots" I want to recommend the song "Supernormal" to you. It was written during the same time as the songs on RE-ANIMATOR, the one about the bicameral mind (and of course it's really about a number of other things but mostly Jonathan Higgs singing about his feelings), and released on an EP that came out after that album. So it's one of the last songs they released before Raw Data Feel. I think you kind of bridged a gap there. To answer your questions: Yes, they are consistently this good and I don't really know how big they are in the UK but they're so unknown over here that it makes me feel crazy. Also: you should skip the weird reddit fan theories and be careful reading the Genius annotations for Get To Heaven and RE-ANIMATOR if you do reviews for them because I want to see how your interpretations are different from mine!
