You can have water trucked in an added to your tanks if they get too low. There are tankers that fill swimming pools that can fill all your tanks to the top. You might also consider drilling a well and adding it to your power grid that you created.

Two main problems with wells: 1. They can be VERY expensive to put in (on the order of tens of thousands of dollars), especially in remote locations like they're in. 2. Well pumps use a LOT of power. They essentially have to shoot useful quantities of water hundreds (maybe thousands) of feet into the air through a pipe. I like the idea of calling a local fire company though. Never hurts to have a rapport with the local EMS.

This may be the final indoor project, but there are many outdoor projects that can still be done. To make life a bit easier maintaining the outdoor decks, and the pump house, I recommend using spar varnish as your finish. Spar varnish is made for boats, to maintain natural wood appearance and it's much more durable than applying stain every year.

I agree the water heater needs passive ventilation. Also agree that the right side of the water heater surround could be hinged much more easily now compared to future need, which will come sooner or later. SO much easier now with everything out of the closet, compared to sawing into sides or top and having to totally unload a packed closet because of potential sawdust everywhere. Am also concerned about that slide bolt being low enough for your children to easily open!! Please at least place another slide bolt at uppermost area of the door to the water heater covering. :)) Look at the space between the clothes hanger and the wall. Moving the clothes rod forward would allow shelf space behind the hanging clothes and it is so easy to hold hanging clothes aside to reach shelves built behind clothes rods. Fact - Shelves hold more than hangers. I built easily removable shelves from floor to ceiling in the end of my walk in closet with 1X12 sides, 1X2 rails on the side boards I set on top of the baseboard and 1X12 shelves cut to fit like your gravity shelf in front of the water heater. All held in place by gravity so I could easily lift them out to remove them without any nail or screw holes anywhere before the house sold. Those shelves behind the hangers held SO much that I barely needed any hangers anymore! I lifted them out and took them with me to make wrap around shelves screwed into metal shelf supports in a cargo trailer I still have 20 years later and am still using. Love creatively increasing useful storage space and repurposing opportunities! Y’all have totally and absolutely incredibly awesomely wonderfully inspired and entertained us with constantly creative and adaptive solutions to the present and future needs of your growing family. Thanks for your commitment to these very well edited videos of your progress. I am pained for you as normal aging of your new home as well as wear and tear and weather problems are already causing more work just when you were surely anticipating a break in the constant necessity that you both work to build and are now beginning to face the long term maintenance while still in the construction phase. Praying for all of your wonderful family as you live and grow in your self designed and self built off grid homestead! Spencer, for your next project you need a work shop. I am a union ironworker and I have installed and taken down several half dome enclosures between 2 shipping containers. Some were 10 ft. spread to 20 ft. spread. They are great for a dry place to work under roof and have a lot of storage to boot. Put your mower and toys inside. Build shelfs inside. Key hint, put door in the middle on each of container towards the inside of cover for access. Install covered vents on each end containers for heat to escape. Door in middle of containers will allow you to access each end of container if you have mower or other things on one end and still access to tools and other things on the opposite side. Look up covers between between storage containers, there are several. They were wonderful work areas on our job sites and wonderful dry storage. Food for thought. Love you channel. You inspire us all.

In Australia which is dry and relies on tank water, there was an old saying that the number of tanks is determined by the people who live in the house. Now you got four, and 2 dogs, maybe it's time to look at another couple of tanks. The ultimate aim is not to have overflow and enough to make it through a dry period.

And ditch the sock on the end of the pipe. Don't want any restriction with catching rain water. You guys have got a uv treatment system so who cares howuch debris you get in your main tank. It becomes a settlement tank of sorts. Cleaning the tank means not getting inside at all. Hydrogen sulphide poisoning is real and deadly. Until recently in Australia, we'd have a couple of people die each year due to the breaking of rhe surface of the crud in the bottom.

@@cynthiacrawford6147 They can do it themselves and show us all. Two long brazing rods bent at a 90 degree angle as a six inch handles. Walk the property with them "outstretched" and elbows tucked by one's side so they are able to turn freely parallel to one another. Holding them loosely they WILL cross all on their own. Double check by walking from different directions to that spot and you will find water. I did it and received a "gusher". I am not here to explain why just how.

Assume that drought will get worse, not better. It's the safest bet for a critical family necessity. Build an open pole barn with a large area roof to collect more rainwater. It would be a low cost/high reward project. Plus you get protection from the elements for whatever you choose to place underneath it -- vehicles, finished storage bins. shaded play area for the kids...

Hi guys, been watching since the start, and love the channel. My question is why have you not consided adding guttering to the barn? If you watch OUR FIRST RAIN | Building The Pump House episode 0.17secs in you could link the barn guttering left and right together into one downpipe down the side of the barn, that then comes across the lawn and links into the existing pipework, quadrupling your water intake when it rains. I know it's more work, but then you wouldn't stress about the water you've been able to collect. More surface area, more water

So nice that you are almost finishing the project but by other hand I'm sad because I'm afraid to lose your nice construction videos. Regarding the water tanks I have some ideas that could help you, at least to avoid going out in the rain in the night. Why you don't install bluetooth water level sensors inside the tanks, so that you can control in real live if they are getting filled properly. Not only you can act immediately in case of problems (probably catch some more rain...), but you can also plan your live better at the comfort of your amazing home. You can easily plan if you can take a shower, clean dishes or both. The only concern is if the sensors stop working or get malfunction :-). Another option would be also to install a bluetooth sensor to control the water that flows in your main rain water collector pipe. With this, you can be sure that at least the water is collected properly and avoid waste. A good idea for a next project could be installation of this small, but helpful, gadgets in your house. Making it a more advanced and futuristic house. Sorry for this long comment, I hope you can enjoy living your dream.

Put hinges on the narrow side of the shelf in the closet. Attach the hinges to the wall. Then raise the side of the shelf next to the water heater and hook it under the top shelf. Then you only need to find a place to put your rod and clothes when you're accessing the hot water tank. With the shelf attached to the wall you won't need to worry about children pulling the shelf down on top of themselves.

Since you have that big living room, you could build a little broom closet/pantry in there maybe. (Or even get a little IKEA pre-made thing to put in one corner of the living room for brooms/mop etc.) Like some others mentioned, maybe dig a well at some point and run it through the filtration in the pump house as a back up. Maybe in the future. Also, been watching so long, I can't even remember, are the kids sharing a room? If so, are there plans to do another addition at some point to plan for when they get old enough to need their own spaces? We need a tour soon, you guys have done so much, I can't even recall the entire layout. Can't wait to see what you do with that extra container eventually. Bunker/storm shelter, in-law cottage, etc. Then the pond dock and fencing and snake proofing everything and skirting under the house. Big garden and more fruit trees? Chickens and coop? Digging a pool? Carport/garage? Lol. Future projects perhaps? You guys can't leave us! 😄 Definitely take a well deserved break but please come back! Either way, you guys are amazing. Been watching from the start, so proud of you guys and inspired.

Hollywood showers is what we called them in the Navy. That was a no-no with shipboard life when the ship made its own water. I know I’ve said this several times before but there’s something so ethereal , so magical about the ‘stylized’ videos this couple produces. I’ve always admired cinematography and this couple is truly very good at it. Excellent, really. Don’t know if they studied photography or not, but either way, they’ve a ‘natural, talent/gift’. I genuinely love their perspectives and artistic ‘eye’, is very creative, in the best way. I don’t think I’ve come across another ‘channel’, that is as good with their photography, audio and editing as these guys are. - Same goes for this entire ‘build’/engineering’ ‘feat. Everything is done with an attention to detail and style re the house build and also with intelligence, especially re: the power and water systems etc. The entire property really. Very impressive; and they’re an adorable family with sweet & fun and loving personalities. Thanks for sharing all with us! 🙏 💜 ☀️ ☮️ 🌟 ✝️ 💫

My aunt has a animal shelter in a 400acre land. Took only 3 acres. 7 km away there’s a small waterfall. That’s her best way to pipe up all the way to the shelter for water supply. When her tanks are full the pipes just continues to fill in the dogs pool where it’ll overflow into the drainage system. But if you don’t have that source, could even find creeks and use that.

What you have built for your closet water heater is a "heat trap." This is concerning for an electric water heater because it can promote condensation and mold formation. I would advise adding a small vent grill at the lower and upper parts of the door so you can promote some passive air circulation. This will not lower efficiency and will enhance reliability. BTW, why don't you have a well to supplement your water catchment system?

Congrats on the milestone! I have been watching since the beginning so I am super excited for y’all. Also just a thought on the closet situation, I noticed that in your dining room you have the whole wall where the high chair sits against. If Spencer could build shallow (or as deep as you can work with) floor to ceiling covered cabinets the whole length of the wall and section them off you could probably get a small pantry, a broom closet and maybe some extra storage space without taking up a lot of space since your table is pretty much stationary against the other wall. It would still look like a wall but still be very functional.

That is quite a milestone, finishing the interior! Congratulations. That said, I have been wondering a few things, and I don't think I saw the answers in any episode (I think I've seen all of them) which is always the best YT every week: 1) When you were doing all the sound insulation, you thought it would work well to prevent sound from traveling to adjacent rooms. How well do you think that worked? Below, at, or exceeded expectation? 2) Similarly, you went thru quite the ordeal getting the foam insulation installed. How well do you think that worked, in hot & cold seasons? 3) Another huge project was the addition, and especially the tilting capability of the solar panel bank. Did you get the additional power transfer out of the project? Was expectation a 5% improvement? Sorry, I forget. 4) What are the Top 2 or 3 things that you would do differently? I think you mentioned more storage in the house last week, but what else? 5) What do you think were your best decisions in the 3-year build?

Firstly, great job guys. I've been watching this channel from almost the beginning and always look forward to the vids. The children are getting so big btw; I get it, we have two 14 year olds and an 11 y/o...all girls, it goes fast :/ Hey, real quick thoughts, which I'm sure you've already pondered...but given the intermittent and unpredictable nature of your rain supply, have you considered these three things? A catchment system above your holding tanks? Think of it as a reverse graded roof to the center...metal roof probably with a drain feeding the tanks below? That's a lot of added collective surface area. Second, why not catch water off of the solar panels, even if it's stored in half- drums that would require a manual pump; as a back up. Thirdly, you could have food grade barrels stored near the tanks allow overflow to automatically drain into the back up barrels during heavy rains. Just a few projects I'm sure you guys would conquer and we'd all love to see :) Regardless, amazing job as your home has turned out so well.
