Warcraft was panned before it even opened. Video game movies have an uphill battle right from inception. Maybe the critics were wrong? Here's everything right with Warcraft: The Beginning.
Just as an aside, I've noticed people putting a little too much importance on the final win score of films for comparison. Hopefully this video's score will put that to rest.

I bet they won't make it because legendary not gain profit. U know in usa this movie only get less than 50 million. China save this movie by increase it to 240million. Director said the legendary pictures Will release director's cut if it manage to gain profit at 300 million and we all know they not get that number.
@AH-nc6vv
@AH-nc6vv 7 лет назад
No? It made 45 million in the US and 386 million in other countries for a total of 433 million. It had a budget of 160 million so they made 273 million on it.
@UltimateDrDoom
@UltimateDrDoom 7 лет назад
That's not quite how Hollywood accounting works but even if it wasn't convoluted, the 273 isn't still quite right. There's advertising to pay for, and while the studio gets the biggest cut of ticket sales they still have to rent the theaters they screen in. For this movie to get 300 million profit, it would have to had passed a billion worldwide. China did a great thing for this movie, but still didn't save it. Which is too bad, I thought it was ok, but felt if it was successful it could get better.

One of the best parts of the movie is how the magic was portrait. I especially loved how the difference between a noob and a master was shown, with the drop-out having to grab a chunk of chalk and draw the circle while reciting the entire incantation while the arch-mage only had to wave a hand.

Orgrim Doomhammer was still a puppet of the Burning Legion. Him overtaking Gul'dan changes little to the fact the Horde's true purpose was to destroy human/dwarf/elf resistance to better allow the arrival of the Burning Legion. Orgrim would have done the same, had Gul'dan not screwed him at the last second during the siege of Lordaeron. Once Orgrim had served his purpose, the Legion would have discarded him.

This movie was great. It didn't follow Warcraft word for word (neither did LotR) but it was very entertaining. I didn't even notice Grom/Kargath at the end. They must be saving them for the sequel (if there is one). One thing I liked about this movie that I didn't like in LotR was that every Orc in LotR was a generic evil monster with no real backstory besides, "They're corrupted elves and now follow Sauron", whereas in Warcraft these Orcs have both a good and bad side.
@arthasmenethil7208
@arthasmenethil7208 7 лет назад
but orcs are vastly different in Lotr universe and for fuck sake if you know nothing about lotr or middlee earth in general you shouldnt speak. Lotr is not the only work of Tolkien,believe me Nothing can be compared to "Middle-Earth" despite my favourite character being Arthas. You should really read all the Tolkien's work and you will understand. Orcs were never meant to be badass(except for Uruk-hai) the "Scourge" is more close to the orcs in lotr than here...Peace
@Belodri
@Belodri 5 лет назад
@Scar You got that the wrong way around. Trolls that lived around the Well of Eternity evolved into Night Elves, some of whom later evolved into High Elves who, again much later after Arthas' raid on Silvermoon and the corruption of the Sunwell changed into Blood Elves. And just for completion's sake we now have Void Elves as well who're Blood Elves who embraced the void. tl;dr: Don't talk shit about a franchise when you don't even know the basics of it's lore.
@katatonikbliss
@katatonikbliss 5 лет назад
Considering the orcs in Tolkien's works are sentient, thinking creatures that are essentially enslaved by Sauron, no, they aren't comparable to the mindless and insect-like Scourge. I do agree that the bad guys in LOTR are, for the most part, not fleshed out at all, but there's a reason for that. At the time it was written, something like giving the villain personality was pretty unthinkable.

I've played a grand total of about 20 minutes of World of Warcraft and know absolutely nothing about the lore, but I loved this movie! I'm also a huge fan of both the LOTR and Hobbit trilogies. I never compared Warcraft to LOTR while watching it, because I knew it was a completely different take on the genre. This biggest draw of this film, for me, was it's take on the orcs and how they aren't just mindless savages. Seeing depth, heroism, and even nobility from the orcs is something I wasn't expecting in a big-budget motion picture. Also, Warcraft has the best onscreen depiction of dwarves of any film from this genre. Hopefully we will get to see more of the dwarves in future films.

One thing that really pisses me off about the bad reviews is that I doubt the movie was reviewed fairly. What I mean is that... the reviewer probably didn't even care about video games, fantasy or Warcraft. Had no interest whatsoever. Now, who would you put to review a superhero movie? Obviously you wouldn't put someone who usually reviews a fun childrens movie to review it. No, you put a fan or someone who knows about superhero movies to review. And the same goes for the oppersite! In this case, from what I've heard, most of the critics weren't even into fantasy. They didn't know about Warcraft and a lot of them didn't even seem to care what it was all about. IMO that is a very bad review. And shows why the movie had so many bad reviews overall. At least I feel that way. Its not a perfect movie by any means, but someone gave the movie 0/10. I mean... seriously? How can a movie, thats as beautiful as this one with the scenery and CGI, give it 0/10? Thats not only weird and upsetting. It literally feels rude to me :P

Mucrush I haven't played the original Warcraft games though I know what was the story in them and I will admit I'm not a fan of the film. For me, it's because of the lack of focus of the plot and the weak human characters. But I really liked the world building and the attention to detail, the Orc characters and performances, the visuals (for the most part) and the film score. But I can definitely understand the love people have for the film. In fact I would had like to see a sequel despite what I said. I think my issue with the movie was there was decent ideas for the human characters but because of the lack of focus, it's poorly developed and when there is emotional payoffs, the impact for me never came. But I refuse to say the film is in anyway even near the worst films of 2016 because there were things I liked. I still adore Duncan Jones as a filmmaker as I championed his films Moon and Source Code. I met him in person and his next project he told the audience I was with in an interview he did is very promising. It's called Mute and it's in the same universe of Moon.

@@thecinematicmind If you know the origin story of WoW, you will know where was the lack of focus came from. To build a game that big, blizzard needs to stretch and stitch the story here and there. And if the fan didn't like the film because it was different than the novel, well... the novel is not perfectly the same as the origin story as well. But, the cast of this movie is bad tho... I saw one or two acting quality that didn't communicate well in the scene such as Garona when she waiting Medivh to awake, she totally broke her character with her face act and gesture.

@Nobody Knows hmmm, true though I've never really had a problem with that. I've always been able to make sense of the movie's plot lines, and don't really understand where the confusion comes from. Though I'd like to understand. Mostly cause it seems weird to me when I hear about it, and before the warcraft movie I honestly had zero knowledge of the lore past what little I played of warcraft 3, warcraft 3 frozen throne, and the super tiniest smidge of WoW. Outside of that, no knowledge, and none of those titles gave me any context on how or when the Orcs came. Nor did it go into much detail over the lore of the characters. So I honestly didn't have a basis for comparison for the Movie and the Game universe. Essentially going in blind. And I enjoyed it, I could follow all the various plots and the characters were pretty good, able to keep me entertained and interested.

And not to mention Blizzard Activision, the company that make this game, just opened their movie own studio last year and already making a Call of Duty Cinematic Universe. They themselves love the movie and expressed an interest in the franchise so it is not likely that we won't see a sequel, just won't back by the same studio. It like Square Enix, doesn't matter how much critics hate on it. They will keep making Final Fantasy movies.

I think part of it was how long the movie was stuck in development hell. People built up all sorts of expectations about what it could be. The other big issue this movie dealt with was Warcraft 1's lore was super bare-bones, and what was later established around it (prior to Chronicles) was a sloppy hodgepodge of retcons and word-of-God. So the filmmakers, understandably, went with an alternate take on it which alienated the purists. Me, I really enjoyed the film, and loved all the shout-outs, easter eggs, and fandom winks, but I can understand why some fans were really put off by the AU take.

because this movie was supposed to be a love letter to the fans, and yet screwed the lore badly on it. like oh i don't know, orcs were not changed because of the fel, they were changed because they drank the blood of manaroth.

Because it completely ignored and butchered the lore, of course that would piss fans off. Dalaran floating when it damn well was not in that time period, the retarded cliche hollywood love sacrifice on the battlefield instead of Garona assassinating him in his throne room. I could go on but I've not watched that trash since its release and its so forgettable I barely remember it. The point - Fans get pissed off when directors with no clue of the source material take artistic liberties and make changes. Outsides love it cause 'oooooh ma hollywood action'.

I felt it was rushed too, BUT, this single movie could have easily been a trilogy based of the first game. Obviously the budget for that trilogy would be ridiculous. So I understand if they have to cram a lot of stuff at the start of the movie.

Well it was very rushed, they apparently cut over 40 minutes from the movies. And if you see the deleted scenes included on the bluray. A lot of them takes place during the first 20 minutes of the movie. And a lot of it is much needed character development stuff.

Honestly I loved this movie quite a lot, but personally I found that some of the story changes they made for the movie were not as great as the story moments they replaced. Such as Ogrim Doomhammer killing Blackhand and beating Gul'dan into submission to then take over the Horde in the first game, and the razing of Stormwind. As well as adding in a son for Lothar in the movie. In the games it was his honour as a knight and pride in his kingdom that made him the leader that he was, and then it was the loss of his kingdom and king (and not his son) that drove him to eventually command the forces of the Alliance against the Horde. It is just little changes like that to motivation and tone that irked me about the movie, but over all I did quite enjoy it.

There is a lot of lore stuff I don't remember but from what I do remember, it is mostly the ending that is the most severe lore change. Garona does not kill the king by her own hand, she is instead controlled by Gul'Dan to do it. Which is fairly traumatic for her as she is forced to kill a good friend. And it is done during a siege on Stormwind where the city falls too. That is the only change I feel would have been more powerful to watch. But I guess that would require a much bigger budget. Though I think they actually was going to do it that way as one of the posters for the movie of Garona has Stormwind burning in the background. Small changes here and there has also been done, like giving Lothar a son and Khadgar is supposed to be Medivhs apprentice not someone who renounced his oath to become the next guardian. But as a big Warcraft fan, these changes does not bother me too much. I think they where unnecessary but I still greatly enjoyed the movie. I just look at the story in the movie to be an alternate universe or something like that.

I will admit that Spectre had potential, but if that's the last Bond movie Craig does, that's also a bit of a travesty to end his stint on. There were a lot of great ideas (the growing irrelevance of MI6 in the digital age hitting even harder than in Skyfall; Bond going rogue on a semi-personal mission; the whole relationship between Bond and the girl who's name I forget and am too lazy to google), but they were stifled by poor ideas (twisting in the MI6 irrelevancy with the actor of Moriarty leading the alternative charge: you're giving away that he's a secret bad guy literally the second he comes on-screen (and even that reveal wasn't handled all that well, like even the characters within the movie were expecting it as much as the audience was); the linking of Bond of Blofeld through foster parenting that was wholly unnecessary and honestly detracted from the character of Blofeld by taking him from a fairly decent criminal mastermind who's plans James keeps mucking up and turning him into what amounts to the replacement villain from Luke Cage on Netflix). It also had something I honestly didn't believe was possible; a boring car chase. And that car chase itself also had no reason to be boring from a theoretical standpoint; it's Bond in a suped-up sports car trying to escape super-henchman Batista who's being set up as the Jaws of the film. A chase with that set-up should not be boring, but that chase was.

One of my favorite movies ever. I admit I am extremely biased, as I've loved Warcraft since I was seven years old, but I really enjoy the movie objectively as well. I think 50% of critics would like it more if they watched it a second time. Yeah, the pace is fast, but everything you need to know (besides who the Draenei slaves are) is explained. And Medivh is Garona's father in this universe! Whaaaat!
@ryuranazmut3617
@ryuranazmut3617 7 лет назад
I feel that the greatest mistake of the movie was to not spoonfeed all the details and lore. I may be a little biased since as a big fan of the Warcraft lore I already knew the characters and settings, but I feel that if it had more explanations, through the movie it would have been more successful to the critics and majority of movie-goers (that aren't Warcfraf fans already) alike, if it was more like someone telling a great tale about the past or something like that. The subtle format of the movie works more for a tv series ( which sadly would be impossible due to the high cost CGI) than a movie, people would have more time to understand and relate to the characters and story. I personally loved the movie though, hopefully they will make a continuation and I will get to see Arthas and Illidan on the big screen one day.
@BigDoener

I wouldn't agree with that. Mad Max: Fury Road only had minimal explanation of the world as well (poisoned soil, guns, water and oil only ressources left) and still did amazing. I think Warcraft's issues were more the lack of focus in regards to story and the weak human characters
@ryuranazmut3617
@ryuranazmut3617 7 лет назад
I'm sorry but both your exemples are not comparable with Warcraft. Mad Max is mostly praised for it's action, it's story is too simple and didn't really an explanation on the world since it was a soft reboot. Lord of the Rings had it's fair share of explanation, imagine if it had started without telling the story behind the rings and showing Sauron for exemple, not to say that most characters are introduced very well. So I think it's a mistake, even from the director's part to compare to LoTR.
@ryuranazmut3617
@ryuranazmut3617 7 лет назад
***** That's what I call "spoonfeeding", that's what attracts more people. What Warcraft did was appeal only to the game fans, people who knows the lore and characters, if you did you probably would like the movie, if you don't I can see you not caring for the characters and story at all. That's why I think that if they did explain the setting and lore in a more obvious and clear manner it could have gone a completely different way.
@thinhvo3893

Lord of the Ring have an hour long exposition even without the extend it is still a lot which this film extremely lack. I remember my friend just give up on watching Lotr (an idiot) because to him it was too long of an exposition. However those exposition was so much worth it if some thing ever happened like let just said Gandalf death (in the first movie not the second) and Boromir last stand. What Warcraft did was, hey here a fucking spoon chew it or dies.

As someone who has studied the lore for a solid 4-5 years, the story was vastly improved. Garona being brainwashed into killing the king wasn't nearly as interesting as doing it for a Machiavellian reason. Also her being Medivh's daughter instead of lover is way better for their dynamic and doesn't lead to he who shall not be mentioned being born. The only people complaining about the lore being changed are elitists who want to show off they know the lore.

And Prince of Persia too, I loved that film, even if it was a semi departure from the games, it was good. But critics had to hate it too. That's the problem with critics. It's about half of the first game. I do have 1 problem with them changing the lore though. The human was supposed to be wiped out after losing at least 3/4 of their army after the last part. In the lore they went and seek shelter/help from another human king in a faraway continent. Now they just miraculously produce army on their own after the defeat.
@War450
@War450 7 лет назад
Frzned9x I've never actually played warcraft but as far as I know the humans of azeroth never left azeroth. The nation of Stormwind, unable to fight the orcs by themselves, sought help from kingdoms in the north like dalaran and lordaeron, thus forming the alliance. I also haven't actually seen the movie either but this video had a scene of them chanting about the alliance. I mean, given warcraft lore they COULDN'T seek help from a human king in a faraway continent since azeroth was the only continent with humans on it. The only other continents were kalimdor or northrend and neither of those had human kingdoms.
@Frzned9x
@Frzned9x 7 лет назад
War450 Lordaeron is in a different continent than Azeroth. I remember them running away on ships to Lordaeron in a cutscene from the first game. Not really that experienced with wow either. Googled the map, they are on 1 continent called "eastern kingdoms" in naming but in 2 different continents physically. Azeroth is half way accross the globe from Lordaeron (vertically). Lordaeron is in between Ironforge (Dwarf capital) and Quel'thalas (High Elves capital) so it is capable of rallying the high elves and the drawf, which are inaccessable from Azeroth by land unless you went through a mountain. The Orc was supposed to conquered the lower half of the continent.

I feel like they had a rough time with this one. As someone who knows a thing or two about the lore of Warcraft: If you wanted to explain every race, clan you'd need like 2 movies before this one. And they would be boring as hell to just show you who's who, where are they from, why do they act like they do. At least I think it would not be to easy to make those movies really interesting while giving you tons and tons of information. This movie honestly was made for fans. To know the orcs you would have needed to at least play WoW in Warlords of Draenor. The humans? Harder, most of them don't show up to much in WoW. But then again: if you know a bit about the wars, and know the Orc Clans, you understand this movie just fine I think. But still, if you just look at the movie: the plot isn't to complicated, so this part should be ok even if you don't know to much. You'd not know some of the Orcs from the look, but I don't think thats to important. So for a movie about a video game? I think its still good. Not great, it certainly has issues, but it looks great, CGI and voice acting is pretty good I'd say, and you have calmer moments for character developement but also battles and action, I think the balance isn't to bad as well. Could it have been better? Sure. But some issues are hard to fix since the universe is rather big. But to be honest: it could have been WAY worse. So I think they did a good enough job, there was certainly effort put into the movie. As a fan of the games and the lore? I'd hope to get a sequel, there is SO much to tell after this movie... Rise of Thrall, Arthas and the Scourge... granted, parts of those movies would be really depressing but then again: not every game movie has to be light hearted, fun right?

i’m not gonna lie, i knew nothing about wow going into this movie but i extremely enjoyed it for just the story it was telling, i will say i didn’t see some of the deaths coming, but i loved the movie so much that i ended up looking a bit more into wow itself, and whenever i get paid again (been out of work for a while due to everything pandemic wise) i plan on buying a subscription to play it. if this wasn’t made i dunno if i would’ve ended up ever finding out about wow, a lot of my friends don’t play games like this and hadn’t even heard about the movie when i asked them about it and i have this movie to thank for that. it honestly introduced me to a game i’m extremely excited to jump into as soon as possible. did i know everything i needed jumping in, probably not, was i taking in the info they told, yeah, but as somebody who enjoys fantasy movies in general and found the movie randomly in a Walmart for dirt cheap last year i think it was honestly pretty amazing. it made me a bit sad to hear that it might not get a sequel too since it seems like the story was just getting started.

I agree, my only problem is how fast it's pace was on the first half, but even then I never felt confused nor do I lost interest. Plus, it is currently the best Video Game to movie adaptation I've seen, so while it isn't perfect, you do have to give credit to the creators whom tried to please two extreme sides or movie goers, and even managed to partially succeed. So yeah, nice movie that was hated a little too harshly.

Medivh's Golem, not Medivh's Gollum. I think Mister Frodo would have had a problem if Gollum was that big. Also I think you meant to say "total immersion" and not "total emersion"?

I started playing WoW with my dad when I was 7 and so this universe has always had a place in my heart. My parents (who both played this game for years after I was born), although they didn’t understand as much of the lore as I did, loved this movie.

It was a beautiful film, even those in my family who know.. nothing of warcraft or the lore enjoyed it. the action was well-made, the cgi for both the orcs as well as lothar's gryphon and the small little nods to the games were both realistic and stood apart from the others aspects of the movie. The Lore and storyline itself was actually fairly spot on, sure they shifted garona's relationship with lothar a bit because of the ret-con to her son, and the ending wasn't the mind-controlled crazy uber-garona some might have expected, but it was well done, and was set up for another movie. All-in-all, as someone who has read lore from the very first Warcraft to the current expansion of WoW, I'm happy with this movie. It gives me the nostalgia I wanted without it crushing me, it delivers beautiful world-building and brought to life my FAVOURITE city (ironforge) and it builds up the characters. It introduces Varian very well and makes sure that it is clear where this is all going. It does. The Job! Hell it does it really well! Visually beautiful and story-wise, at least to me and a few others I've talked to, pretty darn spot on. Of course there are going to be differences, with parts of the official lore being ret-conned, or even just being hard to explain in visual form, such as the real reason for Garona killing our lovely gold-clad king, and garona's relationship with The guardian, they did well to change those around into something a bit easier to digest. What seems to be a common thing Warcraft fans don't quite realize is, yes, this is 20 years of lore they're trying to put into a possible series of movies, but the timeline is scewed. The Warcraft team has changed lore to fit WoW, ret-conned things such as Garona's guardian son, changed relationships, killed off people who were originally alive at some period, messed around with the original guardian storyline for Medivh, all of these things can't be fit together because, and I HATE to say this, but some of it makes no sense anymore. Having Garona with Medivh no longer makes sense. having Garona kill Llane the way she did in the movie was a better ending than the long, convoluted mind-control idea originally introduced in lore.

IDK how i missed this as ive been a long time sub. As someone who put over 500+ days in World of Warcraft BEFORE quitting the diehard life during Warlords of Draenor. I had also played every single Warcraft game, (Starcraft too, that needs a movie as well) and have read all the books. Other than a few things in the Movie, that I think were done to ponder to the inexperienced, this was all around made for the fans. Which, in my experience, when looking at video game based movies, tend to fuck shit up horribly, Assassin's Creed for example, while still being watchable, but only once. Warcraft on the other hand wasn't that, I watch it at least once a year because it gives me the fuzzies inside. And when I forced a bunch of my friends to go see it with me in theatres, gave me the spark to start playing again casually, and got a few of my close friends to play as well. I jumped up from my chair and shouted FOR THE ALLIANCE during that scene in Stormwind. Even tho I main horde now. Such a good movie for those that knew. Would be nice to see a second but that's highly unlikely.

Are we getting a sequel? I have been following the story (or try to at least... ) and began reading the books and there's so much of the story that I think will translate well into a movie. I enjoy watching this and I really do hope there will be more.

Here's how I view this movie. Revenant won best picture last year. Mad Max won multiple awards for technical feats. This movie shows the natural shots that made Revenant great as well as the technical mastery of Mad Max. While this movie isn't inherently likeable, it's not boring or dull either. It doesn't quite reach the peaks of Lord of the Rings in epic battles. The movie is overall visually stunning though. They have great costume designs, cgi monsters, and world building. This movie isn't for everyone for sure. I'm just surprised the critics haven't sung the praises of this movie. It should be critically good besides being overwhelming in lore. The only reason this wasn't the highest rated movie of the year by critics is Hollywood politics. It's the reason movies like Marvel or Pixar movies aren't nominated for best picture. Critics don't personally understand the movie and aren't told they're supposed to like the movie. To clarify something, my current personal favorite pick of this year is likely Zootopia. The political commentary, buddy cop, comedy is too strong to ignore. It's not my favorite overall, but likely the biggest piece of art.

actually the critics outside of the US weren't that bad. The problem is that the US tends to follow the critics too much and most of the critics were going in knowing they would hate it regardless because they hate all video game movies no matter what (hell some of the critics even wrote their review without watching the movie they just read a negative review and paraphrased it)
@Redflametrow
@Redflametrow 7 лет назад
Revan Ruler The problem with reviews is that likely 20% of the biggest reviewers are completely out of touch with the market. They like things that have complex themes that they infer to be true. One look at something like Revenant could have it as a beautiful journey. On the other hand, the Revenant shows on the surface a guy very slowly trying to get revenge and just barely surviving at any given time. Just very little desire for the market to see the movie, but they thought it was the best of the year.

One thing I loved is how they made using magic a physical ability, like they were pulling the magic from some other space and manifesting it on this plane. That's the work of a top-notch movement director/stunt choreographer.

The action scenes were amazing, but I'm kinda upset they made footmen such useless red shirts. They stand literally no chance at all in a fight against orcs in this movie, and part of it is because they went with WoW interpretation of orcs - basically Hulk - but not with humans, who look like muscle mutants as well. Back in RTS games they were certainly strong and muscular, but not inhumanly so - an army of Conan the Barbarians, versus the equivalent of LotR Gondorians.
@CeilingNinja
@CeilingNinja 7 лет назад
Well, after Warcraft II, a footman couldn't beat a grunt in one-on-one combat. They needed backup and support units in order to have a fighting chance.
@grasander
@grasander 7 лет назад
True that, but it's not like they were useless against them. 3 footmen were about equal to 2 grunts, and here it's like they're made of tissue paper
@CeilingNinja

It's also the first time in universe the humans have ever seen the orcs. They likely never had to fight anything bigger than themselves, and the tactics they use against other smaller races wouldn't work on orcs. I mean sure you can get lucky, but without learning how to fight something as savage and huge as an orc, they're not going to do very well.
@dylancross1039

Tomek Zylka Have you read the books? The orcs initially tore the humans apart until they had backup. The demonic horde was nothing to be fucked with.
@LuaanTi

During Lothar's first fight, you can already see him adapting to the new enemy - they were completely unprepared, and the Orcs were very stealthy (indeed, even that fight would probably be another stealthy victory, if not for Medivh). As he progresses through the movie, he gets better at this, until finally he's just tearing through them. Presumably, he revised the Footmen training with his experience from the field - don't try to be _stronger_ than the enemy (that worked on all the other peoples in the region, but not Orcs); be faster, more agile, smarter.

The movie didn't trash on lore, After seeing the movie I thought that but then I replayed the first Warcraft game, and all that happens there is in the movie, exeption being the fel and the origin of thrall (he wasn't resurrected by fel), all that being in the expanded lore after the first game, so minor things.
