I'm still in the middle of the book that this movie was based on and its mindblowing how they just skimmed over the world-building and changed the ENTIRE egg hunt, literally the entire plot. they changed the answers, the riddles, they took out a whole SUBSECTION of it. jesus. theres also multiple spielberg references in the book. i guess steven really liked his references.

The saddest part is they changed the Hunt's premise. In the book you need to know 80's trivia to solve the riddles because Halliday loved the 80's. But in the movie you have to know Halliday Trivia. which is dumb. and is more akin to the books sequel, Ready Player Two. You dont get that joyous feeling of solving the riddle With the characters because the information is based on something you cannot know about in our world.

Sin 192: There's about 10 minutes of exposition at the start of the movie, half of which could be introduced later or cut out Sin 193: The way the characters talk about King Kong makes it sound like they use the same map again and again, meaning that you could memorize or even computerize the race, and yet no one has done it Sin 194: IOI drivers all use the same car, despite the fact different cars could help in trying to complete the race. Like imagine if someone brought like truck or something Sin 195: No one has done a Mission Impossible style break-in to try and get the keys. Heck, the egg itself is probably inside the code or something like that Sin 196: "Character on a motorcycle slides underneath a truck" cliche Sin 197: Cars seem to interact with each other, meaning to you could lose a perfect run because someone else, out of your control, messed up Sin 198: "Main character conveniently forgets thing they should know for the viewer's sake" cliche Sin 199: All of New York City's buildings rotate, but builds the bridge from nothing, instead of, like, taking the Brooklyn Bridge and putting it there Sin 200: Wade is kidnapped and brought to a secret base because... Sin 201: IOI has access to body armor and long guns, for no reason Sin 202: IOI doesn't decide to surround the building, despite the fact that they could clearly do so Sin 203: For some reason in the Artari puzzle, the ice breaks after one minute of play, meaning that if you had like 30 minutes, you can do the puzzle by pure trial-and-error, which is what IOI ends up doing

Felt like half the sins were for things that they had addressed in the books. Why could you get attacked in the club? Cause it was in a PvP area, which made it risky and exclusive. Why are there portals? Cause it cost money/resources to travel between worlds. Why wouldn't multiple arcade cabinets spawn? They did in the book. Why could you approach the character doing the final challenge? You couldn't, entering a portal was a single-player thing. Why were there cans of soda sitting around? It was about creating a realistic atmosphere you could brag about. Etc. Etc.

18:35 very true. In the book, the coin is on top of a pac man game, a way of reserving it back in Halliday's time. When parzival tries to remove it, it's stuck. He plays a perfect game of pac man, with maximum points, and then the coin falls off. It's stuck in his inventory, and he can't examine it, and therefore doesn't know it gives him a second life. That's how he got the coin in the book, and I totally agree it was much more satisfying

I haven't seen this movie, so I was pretty surprised to see that one of the characters is an insanely hot girl who happens to have a birthmark on her face. I knew someone like that. Friend of my daughter. I was in my 50s when they were in their mid teens, so I had to play it cool, but seriously, she was gorgeous and had the most smokin' hot figure I had ever seen. Plus, a red-wine-stain birthmark that covered half her face and extended down almost to her waist covering most of one side of her body. I never believed that it distracted from her beauty, but I was an adult and she was a kid so I never told her that. She killed herself at 20, mostly because of her rotten self image of herself as something horribly flawed. It broke my heart that there wasn't anything I could do to bolster her self esteem, but I never let myself be alone in the same room with any of my daughter's friends. Had to avoid the appearance of impropriety, right? My daughter is 25 now and only two of her old friends still come around any more (to her house, not mine) and they have both turned out mostly OK. One married too young and is in the process of divorcing her deadbeat husband. I help out as much as I can, but between the three girls they have five kids, so there's only so much I can do for them. They have all called upon me to help with last minute babysitting, rides to appointments, small loans when necessary (OK - gifts. I have never been paid back), and other things one would normally call upon a dad for and I am happy to fill that role. Neither girl has one, so I am sort of their surrogate dad (and their kid's surrogate grandpa). They never talk about the one that killed herself. Probably because it brings up such painful memories. Better to move on and think of the future.

Nah, she was fair. Her only line to Wade was, "Don't touch my stuff." That's all. The writers failed characterize her, so I sorta felt a little bad she died.
@sagebauland4276

Yeah. In the book he made a statement about how she was shitty but didn’t deserve to die, but it wasn’t played out in the movie. Plus he later mentions to sorrento ‘you killed my mom’s sister you think I won’t kill you?’ Making her death a bigger deal than portrayed in the movie after the stack collapse

She was an absolute bitch in the book. Only looking after him to steal his food coupons and pawning anything she found of his worth any money then expecting him to be grateful to her for letting him stay there. Just another reason why the book is way better than this piece of shit movie, you get far better fleshed out characters.

3:36 - YES! For a completely computer generated race with every element placed and controllable, whoever put this race together has no grasp of continuity, pace, momentum, persistence, or understands that most in the audience can grasp where a handful of critical vehicles are within the race. The Akira bike jumps all over the place to the point where it makes no sense and makes the critical "end" of the race feel forced and stupid.

CrazyE: yeah, that's just one of the stupid plot holes in the movie. The director can't decide if you stay in one place (as you do in the book) or run around with your vision blocked. Sometimes the sixers are running around (in the beginning when they run to their cars) and some times they are strapped in to their rigs.

Well the stats of the weapon and armor are what matters, planet doom didn’t exist in the book, but leveling up just increased what weapons you could use and your base hitpoints. So level doesn’t matter, and a guy with a machine gun will win against a guy with Jason’s machete

@Randomizer-ui4mn

The story is changed depending on the type of media. For example, if it was a play, the script would be rewritten to suit a play. This is what they did with the book to movie adaptation.

@Michael Grabsch Now that's a detail that mattered. For someone like me, who haven't read the book, playing 255 lvl pacman didn't sound that amazing either. He is a "master" gamer after all, kinda. Taking him a year though, yeah that's much more fitting.
@derboehsevincent3791
@derboehsevincent3791 5 лет назад
that's the main problem of the film. It needs an "afternoon" from start to finish. In the book there are month of reading and combining clues - no strange android. Also the quests were lame. Driving backwards, jumping on zombies? The book is an homage to the 80s, the film a dumbed down version of it, sadly. (with useless mentions of newer technolgies and games which breaks immersion for me, twitter, overwatch, minecraft etc)
@JackWatts017
@JackWatts017 5 лет назад
Can I add that the Watts in the movie has been dumbed down than the Watts on the book? And I kinda hated it when the most thrilling part of the book (Watts invading the IOI just to know how to disable the orb) didn't make it to the movie. Imagine that happening on the movie instead. That will be quite more thrilling.
@derboehsevincent3791
@derboehsevincent3791 5 лет назад
thrilling is word that doesn't exists in the film. You never have the feeling that there is some sort of danger. I also missed all the negative side of the oasis - wade alone in his Apartment for month, not communicating with his friends and so on. I really hoped they would make a good adaptation of the book, but it's just another blockbuster
