Sorry for lying I have shot with this camera for 3 weeks not a month haha (got it early then took it to japan and then inter state). Clearing the air with all the main points people keep raising after shooting literally thousands of videos with it! If you are in doubt this is best video camera for creators and I shoot with it for everything!

Well, mine is ordered. Primarily it's for travel photography and videography. I know this camera is heavily skewed towards videography but, as you said in this video, 12MP photos should be fine for most purposes. I *love* slow motion video so it was the 4K120 in 10-bit that sold me. The only other cameras that can do this are the FX3, A7S III, Canon R5 and Nikon Z9, all of which are much more expensive. There's also the A7 IV which has a 1.5x crop so no deal. Or there's the GH6 (doesn't 10 4K120P 10-bit0 and the X-H2S which records at 120P but outputs in 24P/25P/30P. So, this camera isn't perfect for my needs - I'd really have liked a viewfinder - but it's as close as I can get without spending a LOT more money. I managed to get it for £1,700/$2,200 which doesn't sound like a great deal to my American friends but represents a £600/$782 discount off the regular price in the UK.

I shoot things over 30 mins regularly and have tried this camera. Evertime i use it for paid work it Kept overheating and caused me to miss so many shots. Not for event use. It's just a high end tik tok camera to play around with. It's for the kids. No one is gonna take you seriously if you do paid work with this camera 😂

I agree the intended audience is content creators - they should have given us open gate so we can better crop for different formats. Or taken the next logical step and done it in camera. That way, all you have to do is connect to your phone, download the file, and post.

i actually asked sony about open gate haha hopefully they come through but they still only see that for like anamorphic use and not vertical shooting. Hopefully that could come around eventually but again may just be tempted to shoot vertical lol

So the camera will overhat after 15-30 min of HQ recording. But what if you are shooting like 100 clips of 18 seconds (30 min.) with really short pause intervals (max. 10 seconds). Will it overheat or just record to infinity?

will overheat 15 mins in 33 degrees in direct sunlight which is fairly uncommon. 4k 30 30 minutes continuous is basically the standard. Otherwise I shot 4k 60 basically my whole travels to japan (on and off shooting), recorded this youtube video with the camera and the one before and saw no signs of over heating.

Nice mini review. The build quality vs A7iv is pretty shoddy. I suppose, the question is…if you could have only one, which would you choose? With video being the primary use case and needing good supporting photos for projects? The thing is, most, if not all of these reviews say “Get it”. However, they also have an A7iv or several high end camera bodies. Ya know where I’m coming from? Beautiful image out of this. Can’t be ignored. And if Sony make the cinematic bars an option and allow full aspect ratio with the creative looks, this thing would be very powerful for workflow.

@@SianCKB story is king. For RU-vid etc. But, for Instagram etc, people have absolutely shocking attention spans. So, you need about 15,000 speed ramps in a 15 sec reel to keep people watching. I exaggerate obviously but you get my point. I think this sensor coupled with nice colours and some imagination will help brands stand out on Instagram etc. I prefer longer form content and story. Documentaries and what not.

Thanks for honesty. Thanks for confirming small form Sonys still overheat in warm weather. I refuse to buy a camera for video that doesn't have a fan... Southern USA heat and humidity is unavoidable... The APC line runs hot no surprise a full frame runs hot...

Thanks for the video. Towards the end of the video you mentioned the camera is not weather sealed, this was a deal breaker for me. My question is if I tape the microphone up will that still be a problem with medium rain or water spray ? I don't have a need for the mic

There are some potential solutions to overheating: 1. USB fan 2. Dry ice bag. Place a soft dry ice bag on the back of the camera, behind the LCD screen. Carry extra dry ice bags in a small insulated box/bag. 3. Use an umbrella to block sun 4. Cover the camera in a think white small blanket to block sun. Except the front of lens of course.

Hey I have the dilemma at the moment. Looking to have a B-cam/B-roll cam for social media content. Took my a7IV to Japan trip in May but the weather wasn't that great. Lots of noise in my clips. Even with 24mm f1.4 GM. Looking to have ZV-E1 for a cinematic short clips 10-15seconds and maybe at times, a talking head with 5mins duration of myself and subjects? Do you reckon to have FX30 with Sirui anamorphic and 7artisan, Sigma 23mm, and Sigma 56mm as B-cam with robust build or ZV-E1 and taking the advantage of the a7RV, a7SIII and FX6 features with higher ISO range for the shoot?

Hey Andy! Quick question I'm was about to pull the trigger on the A7Siii but it's a bit out of my budget so I'll be getting the ZV-E1! What prime lens would you recommend for filmmaking, car video's and maybe some portrait shots? I was thinking for a sigma ~30mm or something. Any help would be appreciated! Oh and also can you plug in an Atomos Ninja V to the ZV-E1? 😅

i love the 24mm 1.4 i’ve got a video on it raving about it haha. if you want something tighter 35 1.4 is also amazing. choose whatever brand fits your budget. and yes it does just use the micro hdmi cable!

Zed my man, we Aussie Sony continues with odd product design decisions. What bothers me is the active ibis works best with Sony Native lenses. I use a lot of third party lenses so just makes me feel at a disadvantage.

the a7r series is really for photo, this gives you next level video performance like an a7siii on steroids

@@andyescapes it still has very nice performance if exporsure is dialed in perfectly. And 4k 30 with good autofocus and possibility to crop from a big sensor. Probably would get 10bit with an usable log for more extreme color grading, good night performance (but does autofocus keep up at night?) and 4k 60p. Not available 4k 120p at start sucks (and you need to pay for it lol, even if it would be barely usable because of overheat). Would be nice if someone reviews how it behaves on a gimbal and low light autofocus. Sony likes these "this feature is disabled if it is connected to a control cable or HDMI is connected"

REALLY REALLY NICE video Andy!! I will use my buddy A1 and probably hold off on getting 3rd camera although I am tempted to get FX3 I will wait to see what Sony does in the future with new cameras. From where I stand, sit or lay in its own was as you also said Sony adds a bit more to its new cameras (probably - most likely) in a effort to make you want to get that camera. That is TRUE TRUE TRUE (I mean that a lot - can you tell) since I own the A1 & A7Siii have 2 GM lens, a G lens and one another so I am DEEP INTO Sony's ecosystem and they certainly appear to be now playing the "lets hold back not give our high end cameras the firmware up dates we know people want and we really should game. Do not think I will ever buy a Sony real high end camera again since it makes little sense with lower end cameras get the software and updates most people buying the highest end Sony camera would expect. You video helped convince not to get the ZV-E1, thank you!!

mainly just because it has the exact same sensor as that camera so you can see it is a great deal haha. I’ve used lumix before the sony e mount is worth it compared to the L mount which will give many headaches haha same as canon who don’t let third party lens manufacturers exist

@@dericsanchez4081 the lenses are just wayyyy more limited. Take this example, its a fact that the AF on s5ii is not perfect by any means and if i want a 24mm 1.4 (my fav lens) the only option lies with sigma which is a worse form factor version of the 24mm sony gm 1.4 and then add on to that the AF performance will definitely be worse on a sigma lens vs a lumix lens on the s5ii. If you used the same sigma lens on the sony it obviously wont be as good as a GM as well but the AF on sony is so good its really negligible. Also the second hand market is dreadful for L mount haha lost a ton of money there too but yeah just a little rant for you haha

@@dericsanchez4081 i mean that’s the whole L mount issue in a nut shell we are compromising f1.8 for f1.4 and the price really isn’t too far off. if you are fine with that i guess L mount isn’t much of an issue but second hand market does not have much demand purely due to the number of users and it took me months to sell a lumix s5 and a 24-70 l mount for quite a discount as well

the ZV-E1 is for video, nothing else - point. no comparison with other cams this and that needed. the price is super ok, you get a A7sIII ( more than 4.000,-- ) sensor and filming thing in a little differend body. i NEVER NEVER had any overheating, even after update and filming 4k 120p for 20min....

That's not true, every single person has a different experience when it comes to overheating. You can't generalize it by saying you can only record for 15 mins under direct sunlught when others are able to record for hours

Thanks for this! I wish it was a bit cheaper so I could put more money into lenses but what first lens would you recommend for someone new to Sony? My main use-case would be short bts of music making, diy music videos and just general day in the life type stuff. My instinct is to grab a 35mm - I'm not ready to spend for GM lens but I really want something good quality. Any ideas? Thanks

28-75mm f2.8 second is the best budget option and can shoot everything you mentioned!

If you are only going to shoot video, Sony 20mm f1.8 G should be a great options, you can use clear image zoom to get the 35mm look. For budget ultrawide lens, sony 10-18 f4 oss is excellent. Sony 24-105 f4 oss is also a great options.

A lot of the people in peticular the wanna be youtuber/Vlogger, buy every year a new phone from apple. They´re willingly paid more than 1500€ for an iphone -smartphone. BUT for a camera like the ZV-E1, noway, "too expensive"! PS.: Many of the RU-vidr/Vlogger buy every 1or 2 year a new Apple Smartphone.

sony ibis is as worthless as not having it. your video sample is digital stabilization, which im sure the canon r8 has. so we would have to see a real side by side comparison. im sure the sony digital stabilization with it extreme crop could be better but again extreme dynamic crop.

not all digital stabilisation is built the same and if you can get stable walking shots with out wobble what is not to love. 1.1x crop isn’t much at all and they use clear image zoom anyway

@@truthseeker6804 the dynamic mode is about 30% and walking straight is practically a gimbal but if you check out my review you can see the plain active mode (1.1x) is still way better than it was before. i brought a gimbal on my japan trip and never touched it lol so great for the run and gun shooters!

@@truthseeker6804 i said this is better than the R8 when purely comparing stabilisation and basically if you want to shoot video. if that doesn’t matter to you then go for the R8. having 0 stabilisation is pretty crippling if you want to shoot video. Objectively the only thing the R8 has on the camera is more megapixels in photos but everyone has different needs so you can buy whatever you like 😃 To be fair I also would not say this is exactly a beginner camera but can still serve many beginners if they want to invest more at the start
