In order to help all of my writer friends navigate the book editing process, I've decided to film a video series delving into all of the different kinds of editing. Hopefully, I can help you figure out what kind of editor you should hire to help you make your book publication-ready (or querying-ready if you're going down the traditional publishing route).
I am kicking things off with developmental editing. What does a developmental editor do? What sort of issues does a developmental editor help a writer address? How much do developmental services cost and what questions should you be asking?

Glad this video was helpful! ☺️ There is such a wide range when it comes to how much editors charge because every editor is unique in experience, education, and how they want to be compensated for it. But you’re right, editing can definitely be pricey! I’m almost done writing my book and will be looking for a developmental editor as well, so I completely feel you on that 😅 Best of luck with your work in progress!

Thank you for this information! It's going to be useful shortly (LOL, when I finally finish the darned book). I'm imagining the *immersion* in the work being edited that an editor needs to accomplish to do the job right. I think it would be exhausting. $46 to $50 per hour for developmental editing seems low to me. Between your given 3 to 3.9 cents per word, and the pages-read-per-hour figure, I can calculate how much a developmental editor will cost me when I get the book done. Ouch. Again, great video, and thanks.

I have book 1 finished. I am plotting book 2 - a sequel, and I list some foreshadowing and hints that come ot fruition in book 2. Should I point out this bits that may initially seem extraneous or superfluous that an editor might initially recommend deleting?

That’s a great question Elizabeth! ☺️When it comes to writing a series and each book containing foreshadowing/Easter eggs that pay off in sequels, I always recommend listing them out in a separate document that you can then share with your editor. Upon agreement, that can be one of the things the editor gives you feedback on. Foreshadowing is such an important part of storytelling, especially when it comes to writing a series. A thorough editor can help you ensure that the bits of foreshadowing are effective and are used at the most optimal points in the book. Hope this helps ☺️
