As much as I wish I had sent my dog to Brandon for training before bringing him home ru-vid.comUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU I am so grateful for this down-to-earth, practical guide. His training techniques and tips really work. Thank you as well for dedicating your life's work to rescue dogs, and to rescuing those of us who want the very best for our 4-legged family members.

Hi, thanks first class information, i have a question, when first starting training and going forward with training, is it ok if you alternate trainers I.e different member of family or is it better for one member? Thanks Kevin
@robinrutherfordcost4748
@robinrutherfordcost4748 2 года назад
@@kevinmccarlie5717 it's best to meet as a family to decide what the words and rules are going to be and get input from everyone - what you want to teach, etc so everyone is on the same page and the dog doesn't get confused. Like if the rule is no dogs on the furniture, it's not fair to the dog if when Mom/Dad aren't around the dog is up on the furniture. Either they are or they're not or the dog has their own piece of furniture that the dog is allowed on. As a group class obedience instructor, our rule in class is whomever is holding the leash is giving the cues/commands. As long as the cues are the same and consistent, especially with the release word so the dog is clear about when the exercise is over, you s/be fine and the dog won't be confused.

The more difficult part is how to work with stubborn family members who just don’t wanna be on the same page. They don’t respect my advice and our dog suffers for it, there is no leadership, no direction. 😢 example, my dad feeds my dog freely without any discipline, aka spoiling him. When I bring it up, he gets mad at me. We need therapy
@nicholasyoung2867
@nicholasyoung2867 Месяц назад
I hear that. Been trying to get my dog to lose about 5 pounds, put her on a diet, and when I went back to the vet, she hadn't lost anything. Found out family was giving her table scraps. So frustrating when people that don't know anything think they know better than you.
@Qwuiet
@Qwuiet Месяц назад
@@nicholasyoung2867 I finally had enough and gave my dad a straight and serious talk, that we all need to just responsibility. I got mad at him and threatens to cut off ties with him. He finally succumbed. Some parents unconsciously bully their children, especially if their children are too nice and they take it for granted.

I learned how to use Pavlov's approach to teaching/conditioning when I was just a teenager & used it w/horses immediately & my dog. Then, I continued using the techniques for over 5 50+ years as a professional horse trainer helping my clients understand how to communicate w/their horses even though everyone said Pavlov's conditioning would work w/predatory animals alone. I promptly proved that was totally untrue & never looked back. My horses & the horses of my clients have all been introduced to a type of training that conditions them using the reward of treats. To my amazement I found horses are indeed motivated by treats just as dogs are. As soon as I established the fact my horses would perform behaviours for treats, I was very quickly able to illicit behaviours by simply asking for them & the horses would comply. I also discovered that horses in general, learn just as quickly when they are mature adults as they do when they're youngsters. When horses are paying attention to you they're learning from you. They observe each other & learn new things from each other each & every day, they also learn new behaviours by watching you with other horses each & every day, while they will also respond well to any training you wish to share with them on a pink or canary diamond recognition diamond.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:02 🐶 Understanding dog behavior: Dogs are motivated by accessing something pleasant, preventing something unpleasant, or enjoying the behavior itself. 00:25 🕰️ Timing is crucial: Within one second of a behavior, use primary reinforcers (food, toy, affection) or a marker (sound like a click) that predicts a reward. 01:07 🐕 Conditioned markers: Dogs learn to associate markers (words or sounds) with rewards, just like Pavlov's dogs associated a sound with food. 02:23 🐾 Marker timing and value: Use markers within a second of behavior; the value of a marker depends on predicting rewards consistently. 03:46 ✨ Training process: Start by conditioning markers, then use physical cues for behavior, add verbal or physical commands, followed by the marker, and finally the reward. 06:07 ➕ Four quadrants of operant conditioning: Positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishment. 09:11 🎯 Markers predict actions: Continuation markers (e.g., "yes") signal reward continuation, and terminal markers (e.g., "free") signal release and reward. 10:49 🚫 Wrong and no: Use "wrong" for negative reinforcement (guidance) and "no" before corrections (positive punishment). 11:59 🛑 Negative punishment: Implement "no" to indicate a correction is coming (negative punishment). 13:25 🔄 Timing of markers: Begin moving within a second of using a marker; you don't have to provide the reward within that second. 16:11 🐶 Engagement training: Establish strong focus through markers, especially during puppy training, for quicker learning. 18:49 🔄 Release cues: Use release words ("all done" or "break") for ending behaviors without predicting a reward. 20:31 🐶 Use a terminal marker for training rewards to reinforce commands. 21:12 🏆 Terminal marker teaches faster response, associates reward with quick action. 21:53 💡 Hold hands by face to encourage eye contact before using markers. 22:21 🗣️ Say marker slightly before rewarding, avoid simultaneous delivery. 23:16 🕒 Deliver reward based on dog's attention, not just within a second. 24:00 🐕 Reinforce training with treats or toys initially, gradually reduce. 25:09 👀 Engagement training establishes dog's focus before commands. 28:20 🛎️ Conditioned marker leads to behavior anticipation for rewards. 30:01 🤝 Use different hands to reward, teach varied response. 34:38 🛹 Fixed shaping guides dog into specific desired behaviors. 36:28 🔍 Free shaping rewards behaviors you like without set goals. 38:11 🍗 Use luring to guide dog into positions for training. 41:12 🏃 Chase games increase engagement and make training fun. 42:37 🎮 Make training playful and enjoyable to accelerate learning. 43:21 🐶 Teach "power steering" technique by guiding dog with food to aid turns. 44:19 🐾 Guide dog's head for positions, reward with "yes." 45:47 🪜 Teach "sit" command: Lift hand, mark when rear end sits, reward. 47:15 🐕 Guide hand down, create a "cave" with hand for "down" command, reward. 48:39 🐾 Use hand to assist dog's rear end to stand for "stand" command, reward. 51:58 🚶‍♂️ Train loose leash walking using "heel" position, guide with hand or leash, reward. 54:20 🐕 Teach "come when called" by walking backwards, reward close to body. 56:08 🛏️ Train "climb" command by guiding dog onto elevated surface, use "off" command. 57:52 ↩️ Teach dog to spin in circle using food, choose direction, incorporate into training. 01:08:39 🐶 Using luring technique for training involves guiding the dog with food to achieve desired positions. 01:09:10 🐾 Adjust rewards based on your dog's motivation and perseverance during training exercises. 01:10:13 🐕 Teaching "walking backwards" by luring and marking small steps; gradually increasing difficulty. 01:11:22 🦴 Luring the dog to "walk backwards" using hand cues and rewarding progress. 01:12:19 🐾 Using luring to encourage the dog to "walk backwards" and marking successful steps. 01:13:10 🐕 Developing the "rear end awareness" by luring the dog's back end to pivot. 01:13:37 🍖 Teaching "walking backwards" with a focus on using luring techniques. 01:15:22 🚧 Using a barrier to guide the dog's movement while teaching "walking backwards." 01:16:02 🌀 Teaching the "center command" through luring with food in both hands. 01:17:44 🐾 Introducing the "place bowl" exercise: getting the dog to place its paws on the bowl. 01:18:19 🐶 Encouraging the dog to place its paws on the bowl and using pivoting techniques. 01:19:50 🐾 Teaching the dog to pivot and maintain its position on the "place bowl." 01:20:47 🥣 Teaching "place" command and maintaining paw position on the bowl for different uses. 01:22:31 🎒 Teaching engagement training with a young puppy using luring techniques. 01:24:30 🐕 Introduction to leash pressure training: using negative reinforcement with leash guidance. 01:25:54 ⚙️ Emphasizing the importance of negative reinforcement with leash pressure and correct timing. 01:31:17 🦴 Incorporating leash pressure to enhance training: starting at the dog's level and moving forward. 01:34:39 🐶 Using leash pressure for training. 01:35:06 🐕 Gradually incorporating leash pressure during training. 01:36:38 🦴 Using leash pressure to teach commands and behaviors. 01:38:49 🙌 Teaching dogs proper directions without immediate correction. 01:41:08 🐾 Introducing leash pressure while walking. 01:45:12 🐾 Transitioning to verbal commands, avoiding overshadowing. 01:52:42 🔀 Demonstrating commands with leash pressure and verbal cues. 01:55:58 🐶 Training should be fun and incorporate variety to engage the dog. 01:56:38 🗣️ Pair verbal commands ("now") with physical cues to improve timing. 01:57:08 🧠 Challenge habits by using verbal commands contrary to usual behavior. 01:58:33 🤖 Encourage dogs to anticipate commands to reduce reliance on physical cues. 02:01:14 ⏰ Time commands and rewards separately for clear communication. 02:05:16 🎗️ Combine leash pressure and verbal cues for effective training. 02:07:53 🐾 Train stays using clear cues ("yes" and "no") and leash guidance. 02:10:59 🏆 Progress from easier stays (e.g., "climb") to more complex ones. 02:19:24 🐕 Let dogs explore and pull on the leash to satisfy curiosity. 02:20:39 🐾 Allow dogs to explore the environment before leash training. 02:21:41 🐕 Build a dog's comfort in distracting environments to enhance training effectiveness. 02:22:22 🐾 Teach leash pressure response and focus during training. 02:22:35 🏃‍♂️ Train loose leash walking: Use harness and collar pressure to guide dog's position. 02:23:33 🎮 Make training enjoyable and playful to maintain engagement. 02:24:05 🐶 Teach dog not to pull using harness and collar pressure. 02:25:44 🚶‍♀️ Leverage leash pressure training for basic obedience commands during walks. 02:26:06 👣 Correct and guide dog using leash pressure for proper behavior. 02:27:33 🐈 Respond to distractions during training walks using leash pressure. 02:29:15 🐾 Progress from harness to leash training gradually based on dog's readiness. 02:32:46 📚 Understand stages of dog training: physical cues, command alone, rewards. 02:34:09 🐾 Address dangerous, destructive, and fear-based behaviors using corrections. 02:40:54 🐕 Tailor training based on specific behavioral issues and implement corrections if needed. 02:44:29 🛋️ Address refusal to perform commands using leash pressure or corrections. 02:45:25 🗣️ For non-compliance, use immediate "wrong" and leash pressure or correction for compliance. 02:45:54 🐕 Teach verbal commands, corrections, and leash pressure for command compliance. 02:46:49 🚶‍♂️ Teach proper stays, reinforcing with leash pressure and corrections. 02:47:02 🛑 Correct dog for breaking stay, ensuring return to previous position. Possibly weeks of work for a 3 hour video with editing. I would personally have spent almost a week just compiling this information to paper and scripting it, if not longer. Then the actual recording can be 2x-10x longer than the finished video easy. Then maybe edit it over another week lol But then I'm not a RU-vidr haha I know a RU-vidr who ends up recording near enough 16 hours for a 30 minute video, then has to sift through all the footage for editing lol Looking at his views it's possible he has a editing team behind him though but this is the first content I've seen so no idea :D

Thank you so much. I have 2 unruly, untrained female rescues who i need to train badly. They hold their bathroom habits while outside and minute i bring them in - they pee and poop in the house. Theyre really feral but very sweet. One is 2yrs old mut and other is 3yrs old pitbulls terrier. Nothing i do is working, so i have to undo their bad habits or they wont be able to be adopted out. What ive trained my dogs is the past is not working on these two. The shelter call me to take them because they couldn't get them to respond to anything, the director wanted them put down. But the staff knew i would save them and i have trained all my foster dogs in the past. I have hope for them, of course theyre food driven. So im totally trying it your way, see how receptive they are. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

First time i see someone valuing free shaping as much as i do... instead of fighting with agressive or fearful dogs and traumatising the fearful ones i do that with them to create a bond of trut between owner and dog and shifting the dogs mindset to a more creative, agression free fear free mindset and trust towards the owners bigger plans behind it. I love how i see the fear vanishing, orientation shifting to the owner without just avoiding pain but looking for fun an treats and affection :) Nice Video from a professionals view!

Thank you so much for this amazing video (and all your uploads). I have always had rescue GSDs and they invariably come with little or no training but have become fantastic dogs. My latest (GSD X Malinois) is especially challenging - she's young and completely untrained but extremely intelligent and willing to learn. She has made me realise that I really need to up my game and I have a great deal to learn so I can teach her well. This particular video is so insightful and informative - I've learned so much from it. I have watched many, many hours of dog training videos on here but yours are by far and away the best I've ever seen. I can't thank you enough for making this available to me. Thank you!

I was wondering, if you have a well trained dog who knows commands in and out and will obey them without rewards, should you still take them out once in a while and while playing with them teach continue teaching already learned commands and rewarding them? Also I’m a huge fan. I recently got interested in getting a dog and wanted to learn how to train one before I made I final decision. Your videos have been super helpful and make it seem much more doable than when I read things online and stuff. But anyways that’s my question. I hope it makes sense LOL
@breakfastbat
@breakfastbat 2 года назад
Isaac, I will answer your question with a rhetorical question, how many things have you learned in life that you have no idea how to do today? Math topics come to mind in particular, how many advanced math topics can you recall if you were to take a test today? It's the same with dogs. You should be training skills for the dog's entire life if you want their reliability and knowledge to stay in tip top shape. The ideas behind Spaced Repetition Software might help you refine your concept of this idea. At first, you have to do many many repetitions, then you can space it out to once a day, once every three days, once a week, once a month. If you want a behavior to continue to be reliable, I would say about once every 2-4 weeks is the absolute minimum upkeep to prevent those skills from degrading too severely. Although it is certainly possible to go many months or years without practice and still retain a behavior, it is monumentally less likely.

We learn so much from your vids, thank you so much for sharing.. 1 of the things I learn from my DIY training on my Boxer dog is that it is easier to teach a trick or tricks compared to teaching a discipline such as loose leash/off leash walking or staying off the couch or bed even when they are unsupervised or even remember where and when to eat, to pee and poo.. when they learn them (disciplines) they become amazingly easy to handle.. I love it, we love it...

Dear Nate, I'm a German dog owner and have adopted 2 very highly driven Hungarian Sheepdog-Mixes last year. Both by the age of approx. 8 month, booth with fear and aggression issues. I've surfed the internet extensively for dogtraining information. I'd like to express that your compilation of basic dog conditioning and training is the most comprehensive and most understandable I've found so far. And I've researched and looked a lot around for the entire last year, e.g. Susan Garrett, Micheal Ellis, Tom Davis etc. Luckily I'm bilingual and can research also in the English speaking dog world, which is a huge advantage for me, because there is far mor information available then in German. Thank you for your very helpful work. Warm regards from Germany

I am so excited to see this video. My granddaughter uses an electric wheelchair and did 4H dog training last year. Our mutt was a little big and unruly, they did ok but I had to be right with her holding the leash. This year we have gotten her a little yorkie. I really like this method because the voice is the cue that she did it right - then Zoey would have time to get the treat. I'm going to have to look more to see if you have a video on 'heel' . That is the thing we are really struggling with that right now. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
