A tour of the darker corners of the PMDG Boeing 737-700 FMC (Flight Management Computer) in Microsoft Flight Simulator - covering:
- Adding waypoints
- Removing waypoints
- Flying directly to a waypoint (DIRECT TO)
- Adding custom or "vector" waypoints
- Adding "Abeam" waypoints (ABM)
- Changing your intercept course into waypoints (INTC)
- Flying offset courses (OFFSET)
- Range rings
We cover a lot of ground, and make some small mistakes along the way. I never edit anything, so you get to see me fix problems too.
Hopefully this will be interesting for you!
For a beginner's guide to programming the FMC, check the following video:

I watch a lot of Sim-related videos and I must say that you are the best. Thorough yet humble. When you don't know something you admit it and this is something I appreciate. Also, a lot of RU-vidrs on their tutorial videos will focus on unimportant items where you are usually focusing on the video subject. Thank you!!

This is so cool, and atthe sametime it shows how antiquated the 737's FMC is..this could be so easy and intuitivein a graphical user interface instead of having to know all these incomprehensible quirks of the FMC..lol. Stilll awesome that it'spossible to simulate this on a home computer in such detail :)

Intersting way to program a flight plan. Usually you do it the other way around, i. e. creating the route first, than adding the SID, the STAR and the Approach. As a side effect this will also avoid many route discontinuities.

13:23 what I've noticed with the PMDG 737 (back in the FSX days) is that if the FMC shows you multiple waypoints because somewhere else in the world there is another waypoint called 'RODOL', the FMC will put the nearest one at the top of the page as that's the most obvious choice. Also, when pressing the WPT button to show waypoints on the chart, play around with the zoom. When there's to many waypoints to display at the current zoom level it won't display any.
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett 2 года назад
Did I not explain that the closest waypoint is at the top ? You're wrong about the number of waypoints - they only appear at specific zoom levels (unless part of the plan)

Hey Jonathan! Great video as always! Never disappoint. I do have a question, Today I flew Cancun, Mexico to Houston, Texas in the PMDG 737-900. But for some reason, my plane would not bank all the way. Like I would have a different turning leg and my plane would turn a little bit, but I would have to manually turn it. If I had a hard right turn it wouldn’t go all the way. Do you have any idea what to do?
@bkcttu
@bkcttu Год назад
I am just trying to figure out if this is just me or it’s a lot of people.
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett Год назад
If you were flying on autopilot, I'm guessing you might have changed the turn rate? (under the heading knob there is a second knob that controls max bank angle).
@bkcttu
@bkcttu Год назад
That’s not it. My LNAV would go in a straight line then the lnav would turn 90 degrees and my plane would not.
@RobFisherUK
@RobFisherUK 2 года назад
In the PMDG tutorial, they have you program a route and near the arrival there is a leg labelled (VECTOR) instead of route discontinuity. I'm not sure how this happens. Perhaps it is a feature of the approach into KSFO (they have you use BDEGA3 STAR and MLBEC transition). This all makes sense to me because as you get close to the airport ATC is likely to vector you. But in this route and on routes I have made up, there is no (VECTOR), only a route discontinuity. In this video you just close them up. I tend to leave them in and make up some ATC vectors for that part of the route. But I don't really know what would normally happen on a flight, or whether there is a difference in how the FMC treats (VECTOR) vs. route discontinuity. What I do know is that you have given some tools here for programming in a route onto the glide slope -- I could put a waypoint some miles before the runway and specify the intercept heading, for example. Useful stuff!
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett 2 года назад
When vector appears it is a gap in the plan where the pilot should take over. I.e. the SID or STAR expects human interaction at that point. You can usually remove them if flying on your own. If using ATC you might ask for vectors.
@RobFisherUK
@RobFisherUK 2 года назад
So I got a copy of the 737 FMC User's Guide by Bill Bulfer. From p28: Waypoint names in brackets are conditional waypoints "events when a condition occurs and not at a geographically fixed position... cannot be entered manually... embedded within stored procedures such as DEPARTURES and ARRIVALS". Then on p29: "When (VECTOR) is the ACTive LEG, the FMC does not automatically sequence to the next wpt. It maintains heading indefinitely. The next wpt becomes ACTive only upon EXECution of the procedure for proceeding direct to a wpt or intercepting a leg to a wpt." I guess this means, follow ATC instructions using the other nav modes and it's likely you'll at some point be told to fly direct or else will intercept the next leg. It's an interesting book, btw. Probably full of ideas for more videos like this!

Love youre videos. Qst: is it possible to just use the route planning inside the sim and calculate it on the fmc? For a easy fast flight when you dont have so much time
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett Год назад
No - the FMC in the 737 takes no notice of the flight planning in the simulator. What you *can* do is create a flight plan in simbrief, download it, then upload it into a very specific folder about 20 levels into the filesystem, and the 737 can then load it as a company route. That said, the flight plan will not come in "complete", so you still need to know your way around the FMC to complete it.

Is there a program that where you put a way point or whatever into the fmc that will appear on a live map? Sort of how you set a flight plan up in a flight planner and upload it to msfs or the pmdg, but in reverse. I put the waypoint into my fmc then will pop up one by one or I select an approach and the way points of that will pop up on the map but programmed from the pmdg fmc...not the flight plan software?
