If you don't want the gaps on the sides, try velcro instead of elastic perhaps. Elastic on the bottom would probably still be best though.

@Towbee92

if you only stay inside for cons the elastic stuff works but if you go to multiple events a year with the same shoes it might not be enough. I managed to walk through this tough shipping strap stuff and even 1mm aluminium. then again I walked to and from cons often and the biggest con I attend is gamescom which is huge.

Is there a version of this pattern for men's boots and is this available on your site?
@mione3690
@mione3690 6 лет назад
Why the gap though when the pattern could be lifted off the boot? Wouldnt the foam be easy to slip on and off then?
@alessiobellotti3912
@alessiobellotti3912 7 лет назад
at 12:00 you said that elastic is a good option, because comicons usually take place in buildings with smooth floors. I live in Italy, and cons there usually take place in the city streets, not rocky terrain, but not smooth either. Is it ok to use elastic for the bottom straps? Or should I use something else? (sorry for bad English)

I'm having to make shoe covers that basically look like a whole new shoe, and my issue is that when I make hte pattern, if I transfer it to foam, the foam's thickness makes it so that it's too small to fit over the shoe properly, and I've really no idea how to account for that descrepancy :/
@gyse6920
@gyse6920 5 лет назад
Add the thickness of the foam to your measurements.

Great video as always, oh mighty evil one, but what about characters who wear different size shoes/boots, such as the Werecat Sisters from Vision of Escaflowne or Rose from Legend of Dragoon? (I have to ask because I know someone else was going to if I didn't). Also, for those of you (like me) who don't want to run the bottom strap under the shoe's tread, here's a suggestion: move it back a little ways so that it's under the arch of the shoe, past the tread part, so it takes less wear and tear. If you're going to conventions, yes you'll be on carpet and linoleum most of the time, but what about when you're crossing the parking lot of the hotel or conference center (asphalt or concrete)? Just a helpful hint; what's right is what works best for you, as always.
@EvilTedSmith
@EvilTedSmith 7 лет назад
+Kitirena Koneko Costume building is problem solving. If don't want to use elastic you can use nylon webbing.

Hi Ted! Question; if you glue the elastics at the same position, and just put a cut in the foam where you now made that gap, it would still work the same, right? No need for the gap.

@lemonmeringue1448

Where the gap is couldn't you leave the foam, but just leave a cut. So that the front and back would be connected and wouldn't have the gap, and just attach the elastic underneath.

Do you have issues with the elastic pulling off the foam? I tried this with EVA floor mats and almost all my straps were peeling back in no time. Do you use a special type of hot glue? I had the basic high heat type from the craft store.
@EvilTedSmith

If you are gluing to the textured side of the foam, sand down the texture to make a spot where your strap can stick to the bare foam.

I have a single concern, when walking, the shoe physically bends and flexes before you bring your foot forward again, with this design, either the foam itself will bend or it would lift off the shoe and look a little weird. If you understand what I’m saying... just interested in knowing if this is really a problem or if it’s really not
@EvilTedSmith

The elastic strap I used to attach the front and back piece together, allows it to stretch while slupping it off and on.

Yes. When maiking the pattern off of the Shoe. Depending on what thickness of the foam your using. If you going to use 1/2 foam make the pattern a quater inch bigger to compensate for the thickness of the foam.

*really* needed this a few months ago when I was trying to make power armor..... I made the helmet and then gave on it completely when a.i had no tools to smooth the bondo on my helmet and b. the boots I tried making over shoes *exactly* like he's doing here (after hours of thinking "how tf do I do this?") failed miserably because I'm too broke for thick foam. RIP every project I dream of doing
@Kyuuei
@Kyuuei 7 лет назад
I've been cosplaying for about a year now. I use harbor freight foam mats. It's $10 raw, was enough to make a helmet, chest piece, arms, and legs (with mess ups and re-dos) they always have 25% off coupons to use on top of that super cheap price (and you can usually get a free item too like a flashlight or something), it smells bad so you unroll it outside and let the sun/rain wash and sun bleach it for about 2-3 weeks, then wash it off and voila. Super cheap foam that is smooth on one side. No one even notices the diamond pattern after I sanded it down some and painted it, but most of my costume just had the smooth side out (trace your patterns on the diamond side to ensure that's the smaller, inner side).

How hot is the foam whenever you form it? I've heard that a hair dryer isn't hot enough but I also usually see people bend the foam with their hands. Are they just in extreme pain and good at hiding it, or is a heat gun not actually that hot? Are gloves an option?
@EvilTedSmith
@EvilTedSmith 7 лет назад
Yes, heat guns get hot. The best way to shape foam is by ysing a heat gun.
@kristenbrandon4647
@kristenbrandon4647 7 лет назад
I find that if you heat it up with a heat gun, wait a few seconds, then shape it, the foam is warm enough to still shape but it's not too hot so you can't touch it :)
@AJS0121
@AJS0121 6 лет назад
HonyeePhantomhive . Wear some mechanics gloves. I do that with the hot foam and it gets shaped faster without playing hot potato.
@epiclolman57
@epiclolman57 6 лет назад
I work in a restraunt so my hands are kind of used to the heat lmao, but a heat gun works best. If you dont have gloves you could use two millimeter foam to hold onto so you don't hurt your hands. The heat doesn't go through

No, I did not. Sorry about that. These boots did not need to be stuffed because there stiff leather boots. If you are using a pair of soft shoes, then yes, you should stuff them before making a pattern off of them.

I've watched this video like three times and I only just now noticed the girl who mysteriously appears for about a minute.
