What a comprehensive video! I recently started looking into Taoism and was wondering about these historical developments. As mentioned Vietnamese culture is saturated with Taoist notions, but they are so entwined with Buddhist or folk practices that one does not know where the threads begin. Somehow it's very harmonious, like the cosmology in "Journey to the West". So glad to see my two favorite channels doing a collaboration. Your channel is so valuable.

So yin yang and the 5 elements look like the vedic siderial astrology and its 5 elements and ruling forms of om and aum. Do you think there could have been a development of thought of these much older philosophies into the Chinese form?

Taoism aka Daoism is one of those faiths that are more about inner discovery
@suikunrin8672
@suikunrin8672 3 года назад
I agree with the discovery part, but I think of Daoism faith and Daoism teaching as separated entities. That aside, if I didn't butcher the phrase, Lao Zi didn't name the practice because "The 'Dao(s)' was not supposed to be named. If it was named, it was not the Dao". What I comprehended from the phrase was that the "Dao" supposed to be vast and various, to give a name is to bind that 'Dao' to the name thus limiting that Dao, excluding it from its 'livelihood', the 'progression'. Like when seeing the word 'Blue', oftentimes people will stop at "Oh, it's a name of a color!" rather than going on further length of pondering about other aspects, meanings, values and significances of 'Blue'. So I completely agree with the discovery part, but inner or not, it's hard to say. Things perceived are built upon different proportions of interactions of 'inner' and 'outer' factors varying between each object and person, it's hard to say which one is more significant between inner and outer in 'Daoism' or 'anything else', don't you think so?

Interesting to note is that the Chinese name for Jupiter 木星,Mars 火星,Venus金星,mercury 水星,Saturn 土星, are named after the five elements, 金木水火土。In a Taoist book 阴符经,the five elements are used to refer to these planets in the solar system (or so I believe), and in according to the Taoist philosophy of heaven and human correspondence (actually not exactly sure if it is Taoist or Confucianist), changes in those planets (which I guess to be the retrograde motion of those planets), means something auspicious would happen (some kind of divination of the future, something to do with the mandate of heaven I think). I'd argue the book is about astrology and divination, but some say it is a military book. I read somewhere that the Yi-Ching was the foundation of the Chinese calendar. The calendar was relevant to farming and knowing the seasons etc, but it was also used for divination. The derivation of yin-yang is from Yi-ching I think, and the five elements from yin-yang. The Yi-Ching is 3 separate books written at different times, and there are also interpretations (divinations?) written by Confucius. But the book is very tough to read, so I haven't really understood what it is talking about, other than its divination purpose. Apparently, 2 out of three books of the Yi-Ching is lost throughout history, but other claims say that the current version encompasses all previous versions or something like that, I'd stay on the positive side and hope we have the full version.

I'd say some of those Taoist scripts may offer insight into the "sciences" that the ancient people used. They are pseudoscience by our standards, but it was working decently for the ancient peoples, and it did come from empirical observations. People in the past are not stupid by any chance, they are just limited by the times they live in, and the preconceptions they have.

OH MY GOD MAN.... I've been reading about teachings of the 100 schools of thought since I was in high school just for self interest. I am a Chinese born and raised in South East Asia. My family worship is the mixture of confucianism and taoism in the magic sense only, but I'm curious as to the teachings of Tao. So I read about Lao Zi, Confu Zi and the other -Zi of those eras. It got my confused, all these are good for the mind, they teach us logic and stuff (and I still dislike Confucianism). But for sure, none of them speaks about magic, feng shui, or any of the god worships. Now thanks to your video, I know what they are roughly. It's so clear now. Thanks a lot bro, you teach history in a cool way.

That's a pretty interesting idea. I dont think these can be considered religions, and if so they are certainly not Organized Religions. They're more accurately each a school of thought promoting a certain way of governing or behaving in society. A conceptual framework.
@nomanor7987
@nomanor7987 3 года назад
@@kurtmill9080 isn’t that what the various denominations of Christianity do? Try to persuade? Whether the people follow or switch denominations is the question. The Hundred Schools of Thought are denominations of Zhouism.
@kurtmill9080
@kurtmill9080 3 года назад
@@nomanor7987 I think promoting and persuading are different than proselytizing and recruiting. Organized Religion intends to proselytize and its life blood relies on recruiting new members to speak and spreas its faith. It's also, usually and largely an unquestioned static faith that requires constant reinforcement. A School of Thought is a teaching where people are attracted to it by choice and share it not by force and desperation, but by invitation and honesty. Obviously for anything to be shared, a certain amount of persuasion is needed, but its different when it comes naturally vs desperately.

Interesting... *Self-note: this would explain how some ideas over the centuries were attributed solely to a single individual "Confucius" and yet one wonders how much of this is true? Lun Yu wrote The Analects of Confucius's teaching; However, much of the actual text was written by his students over a time period spanning the thirty to fifty years following his death. How many of these were actually his teachings and not interpretations by his students? What was left out? What was changed? The human minds back in ancient China were susceptible to the same flaws, lies, rationalizations, and simple forgetfulness as our modern minds, if not more. Conformity to the existing system/rulers is also a thought when thinking about how long these were written after his death.
@joshyeo33
@joshyeo33 2 года назад
christian texts werent written until 300 years after his death... the Chinese have far too much self respect and discipline to randomly assign to some long forgotten person. only two explanations are likely: 1) the INTERPRETATIONS by the students are attributed to confucius either because understanding of the teachings came later, or the students did not dare claim the idea as their own as their ideas stemmed from confucius' teachings; or 2) everything is made up and a concerted effort by different people from different states, across centuries and dynasties colluded to create an image of a person...lol i'm going to go with the first one...

Hong gildong is not a Taoist magic master. ( Infact I dont know what en earth is that) . Its just a simple translating error of dosul. We just say any kind of superpower 'dosul' and we called taoism 'dogyo' . 'do' is an idea not only in taoism but in other ancient Chinese, Japanese, Mongolians,Koreans philosophies or religion.

"chosen" is the old country name of 🇰🇷 Korea. pin.it/4StxErv The etymology of "CHOSEN" means a child of the sky, brought to Earth by a bird when a new moon (mother) gives birth to the light (child) of the sun (father). Korean Hanbok is a traditional costume worn by the child(khan,han,🤴)of the sky when they perform rituals to the sun and the moon. Please Note^^ Shangdynasty = dangun chosen 商朝 天干 = 朝鮮 檀君 History was distorted and divided, and when under colonial rule in the 1800s, they learned colonial history. Currently, Koreans have fled (moved) the dynasty to the Korean peninsula where the Russian embassy was located in the 1800s with Emperor Gojong. Korean means continental nobility. Modern Joseon(chosen ) and Ming(明) Dynasty are the same thing. Cheonjamun was created by the ancient Korean "CHOSEN". 🇰🇷 The old Korean name is "CHOSEN". Characters like "bowl" containing the original ancient language are called sonic characters. Over time, multiple meanings began to be added to a single word. As a result, communication problems arose. So, we studied to solve this problem. As a result, separate meanings were made to create characters. As a result, a cheonjamun with meaning was created. King Sejong of Korea did not create text. It distorts the history of hangul in Korea. Also, the original name, not "hangul", is "cle ssi or cle thi or glish". Its history goes well beyond at least 5,000 years. “GLISH” in English is rooted in Korean characters. In addition, Korean language is the root of the world's languages, including Sanskrit and English in India. pin.it/2QxcZP7 Currently, Korean history is being distorted by colonial history and being educated. www.gelssi.com/ Emperor Gojong moved away from the continent and before the establishment of the Taiwanese government, Emperor Gojong flees to the Korean Peninsula where the Russian Embassy is located This means that the dynasty moved to the Korean Peninsula. At that time, Vladivostok was called Liaodong Peninsula or Giza, meaning the same. This is the Korean peninsula now. Japan wins the Russo-Japanese War and is occupied by the Japanese army. This is the current Korean Peninsula. Joseon is the continent itself, and it is now the People's Liberation Army that the Korean peasant forces abandoned the scholar and joined the European forces to become rebels. Because of these forces, the dynasty moved That is why I came to the Korean Peninsula. The Koreans are the scholar who defended the emperor, and they are called the descendants of the celestial son, and they are called CHOSEN = Josen. They say that the bird came down with the seeds of the sun The origin of hanbok is that when a rite is held in commemoration of that day, a rite in the form of a bird is worn. pin.it/3Wdgimi
