Evolution of the WAD is a show describing the history, legacy, and content of Doom mapping styles and themes. This episode covers quite probably TeamTNT's most important achievement, the source port known as Boom. We take a look at the Boom engine itself, what could be done with it, and how authors chose to make use of it early on; as well as a brief look into how it's used today.
There's no way we'd be able to cover anything close to the full extent of what's now called "boom compatibility", and there's some side-tracking into the concept of limitation projects, but this episode covers the most fundamental bits quite well. Mouldy's Going Down is but one of numerous mapsets, nevermind individual maps, that makes use of Boom features in the present day, something we'll likely cover later on.

Team TNT's deathmatch mapsets: As I pointed out last time, Icarus had special DM versions of each map according to its own readme.

As it stands, none of us have anything particularly insightful to say about TeamTNT's deathmatch maps. Some brief discussions with current deathmatchers lead me to believe that few players used them even when they were new, and no one uses them now. To attempt an episode's worth on them would likely lead to the kinds of things you heard here. I showed it primarily because it is TeamTNT's singular usage of their own engine. Nice to know we can technically add a sixth deathmatch set to the lineup, though!

Sounds like an episode just on DM maps to me! I wanna know what kinds of things players look for in those maps then.

This was a great episode with some spirited debate. The perspective on Going Down is interesting, since that's what got me back into the Doom community and remains my all-time favorite map set. Being an outsider at the time I played a year or so ago, I assumed it was the current state of the art, i.e. basically what Doom mapping was like "these days." I really want to hear more about death match. Doom has p much always been a single player experience for me, so I have no idea how to think about DM maps. I know this isn't easy to do, but I was so curious to see some actual gameplay on the TNT DM maps. I honestly didn't understand what was bad about them.

the maps were really cool. boom looked like a good advancement of features. i still want to go do some doom maps myself, see if theres something new to find to do. the new ones really are better.

I would cite Duke Nukem 3d as having some of the first, but UAC_DEAD did it a year earlier

Just an idea for an episode if it isn't already on your list, but could you make one about starting with Doom mapping? Like what are the available tools, how to pick an engine, where to get some feedback on your maps, etc.

While listening to this, just thinking about the deep water on Map01 of Alien Vendetta. Is that a mapping trick? If I remember correctly, AV should be vanilla compatibility.

I think it's missing lower textures that makes the surrounding floor textures bleed into them

Yep, fake deep water is a widely used trick in vanilla mapping, you can even see it in Final Doom IIRC

Heh I think atomic tomb is "boom" only because I didn't want to think about nor test for HOM/VPO. If I used a generalized linedef or two then old-me will have impressed current-me, because I dont think I learned that until much later

I really enjoy this exploration of Doom history, however watching too much gives me motion sickness every one hour.
