Great video! Unlike all the other "same/better for less" arguments I've seen, this is extremely well thought out. Same for same, pointing out pros and cons, and so on. Much respect.

Astrophotography has quite a learning curve- I am very interested in seeing how you set up your system as I travel in an RV so portability is important (as the best telescope is the one you use all the time)

Very nice comparison. I object against the "much lower price" though. You have to take into consideration the time and effort for putting the parts together to get it to work in first place, including the test sessions. For the experienced user this may be quick and easy. For the unexperienced user it may be quite frustrating. Other than that I fully agree with your summary of pros and cons.

I had been thinking along the same lines. I am thinking of putting my 127mm Mak on my eq6 and try my svbony sv305 with Sharp cap. I could easily pass 5 seconds and for live stacking even get good quick results at 10 seconds. Now just to find the time. I would like to see what you can get the 5se to produce. Bet it can beat the evscope with your set up on everything. And still be cheaper.

Good comparison. I would have liked to see how he aligns with the AZ mount. All in all, it's a matter of preference as to which images are better. Clearly in the first shot light got in the evscope, but in his photos of M1 I see the same thing with the DIY photo. BTW, I prefer the escope image of M1. To me there's not a lot of difference in M42 until you zoom in. Would you be zooming in like that on your phone or tablet? Lastly, again to my eyes, the Horsehead looks much better with the evscope image. So, I think the images are a wash as to which system puts up better images - meaning, some are a little better with the evscope and some with the DIY setup. But, at the end of the day give the cost differential I'm interested in putting together a DIY setup and am considering the Skywatcher AZ GTI wifi mount with a 72mm Skywatcher refractor. That would be a true grab and go system. Looking forward to seeing the followup videos he mentioned.

Great video and exactly what I needed since I was leaning toward the eVScope. I already have a Celestron 130 SLT with Nexstar mount and ordered the ZWO224/ASIAir for my intro EAA setup. Is there anything else that you would recommend for my kit to maximize my experience? Also, I can't seem to find your other videos that you mention in this video.

Good video however a couple of points I want to make. The evscope is made for VISUAL astronomy, that's it's main job. To let you see deep sky easily. It's not meant to compete with regular astrophotography set ups. Secondly, you DO have the ability to change some image settings in the app. Also right up front they say this scope is NOT for planetary viewing. As you can see the scope works very well (I have one and was a backer) but yes, the price is definitely too high. I paid $1,299, I would not have paid $3,000. They do runs sales from time to time I understand. Scopes like this one and the Stellina will get better and cheaper over time. I think it's really going to help more people get into the hobby once the prices come down. Unistellar has already delivered over 4,000 evscopes. I love the idea of EAA (Electronic assisted Astronomy), I've used regular scopes for 50 years and EAA is the future I believe. Have fun no matter how you do astronomy!

Thanks Tommy - good points and I do have a video in the works dedicated to the eVscope. I was trying to give an honest review of what you can expect. In the dedicated eVscope video, I call out how much I enjoy its ease of use - it is great as a grab and go. I did say you can adjust the background and foreground, but IMHO that is very limited. The good news is that most of the items I called out (and I said this at the end of the video) can be addressed with software updates if Unistellar wants to go that route. I certainly plan on keeping and using my eVscope. The real heartburn is the price. I would love to know eVscopes true mission statement. They are pushing "citizen science" but at $3k it puts it out of the reach of most citizens. Again, IMHO, if they really wanted to push astronomy to more people, they would take an approach like the Raspberry PI and make it as affordable as possible. It is a very well made piece of kit and I hope they continue to evolve. I just want people to know what they are getting and that they have other options. Its taking a lot more time to get these videos done, but I have landed on a DIY design that is lightweight, quick to setup (though not as quick/easy as eVscope) and 1/3 the price.... And lastly, I was really clear in the video that this is meant to be for EAA and not Astrophotography! Bottom line, I love that we are all talking about it and hope Unistellar continues to evolve their product - it will push astronomy forward and that is a welcomed/needed thing.

@@cosmicpov4842 One of the cons you have to take away from the eVscope is that it doesn’t support 1.25in filters. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DyCFjn1MDDQ.html

@@cosmicpov4842 I like your analogy of the raspberry pi and I think a raspberry pi of telescopes is a great goal, but my suspicion is that the eVscope price is reflective of the difficulty of optimising for ease of use with current technology. It seems reasonable to expect that in 5 years there will be eVscope equivalents that are half the price they are currently. It's hard being patient though!
@stuartcmcd

Your point about VISUAL astronomy is crucial. I admire the discipline and dedication of astrophotographers, but I just want to look at an object for a minute or so and then move on to the next one. Essentially I'm more interested in experiencing the sky than post processing it. The fact that anyone is bothering to compare an eVscope with a comparable astrophotography setup is testament to how good the eVscope actually is. A better comparison is with what you can see down an eyepiece. I have an 8" dob with four times the light gathering capability of an eVscope and I observe much less detail in DSOs and see nothing in colour. There's a certain purity to just observing with your own eyes, but if I could upgrade my eyes to see more detail I would, and looking at the situation that way, Stellina and the eVscope are a revolutionary innovation. It would also be good taking into account how much time is spent setting up the DIY scopes compared to the eVscope, including packing and storage. If you're travelling and/or using the scope with a family, the more time you have to spend putting the rig together, the less frequently it will be used. Having talked up the eVscope I confess it's too expensive for me at the moment, but in the next few years, as prices drop, I'll definitely be buying that or some other equivalent telescope.

Wrong question perhaps? Why does it have to be a comparison with traditional astro/processing multi modular solution. Its not a bad thing to have the processing chore reduced? The travel/portability I suspect is an unintended consequence, it is a tick in all boxes, the travel capability is a major plus.

Thanks for that overview. Why wouldn't you mention the citizen science features of the eVscope? That's IMHO the killer argument for the eVscope: Asteroid occultations, exoplanet transits, planetary defense, cometary activity, and (soon) other transient events. I am not aware that amateur astronomers could be part of cutting edge scientific observation campaigns with any other telescope of that class...

I have owned an EVscope for the past year. I also have had a Celestron 11" GoTo scope for about 5 years. The EVscope takes BY FAR better images than I ever got from the Celestron (yes, I was stacking); it weighs 1/3 as much so I can set it up and use it by myself while the Celestron takes my husband and I both straining ourselves just to get it out of its box and onto its tripod. The automatic finding on the EVscope is fabulous; there have been times with the Celestron where it took over an hour just to get the scope to know where it is so the Goto could work (yes, I know how to aim it and my way around the sky. It was the scope not working well). The EVscope works how an amateur telescope should work. If you want to do your followers a service, tell us HOW to put together this vaunted DIY setup--you are one of many folks who claim this is a breeze, but I have yet to see ANYTHING that actually explains how to do it. ("just get this and that and the other thing (from where?) and put them together" is NOT an explanation.) I want to get the clarity, resolution and planetary capabilities of my Celestron with the ease of use of the EVscope, but I am really sick of folks who have spent tons of money and even more time learning to do astronomy condemning an instrument that can show galaxies and nebulae to normal folks without the previously spent $$$ and learning curve. THIS is why science doesn't get funded--scientists and dedicated amateurs keep it too dense for most people, so it becomes irrelevant and stupid.
@xaniac2429

What imaging do you use with the Celestron? It doesn't sound quite right that an EVscope can take better images than a Celestron 11 inch one... You're talking about the Schmidt-Cassegrain model I presume? The EVscope is a 4.5 inch telescope which means that it has MUCH less light-gathering ability than the Celestron one.
@lezror9322
@lezror9322 3 года назад
@@xaniac2429 a older DSLR camera (Nikon D3100 I think). yes, the SC. The EVscope stacks for me, which improves the images. Now, one could argue that I need a more suitable camera and more software (I used DSS and Photoshop) --& 100 years to learn to use them. Obviously the EVscope has substantially less light-gathering capability, but the advantages are so many! I have a friend who is a passionate sky nut but lives in NYC area. He uses a 12" dobsonian, and says my EVscope gets decent (not fantastic, but decent) pics of things that he has never been able to image with his dob, despite traveling with it all over the E. coast to try to find a dark sky. The EVs has many disadvantages (can't do decent planets is the one that bugs me most; limited to only one size field of view is a close second) but the advantages are profound & game changing.

@@lezror9322 I have to say that I agree with your comments about the convenience of the eVscope, having owned for a year myself. That being said … if you get better images from the eVscope than the C11 you were doing it wrong. Sorry, but that’s a fact. I have a really nice Astro Physics refractor setup, and an old 10-inch SCT (of a brand that must-not-be-named) and I hardly touch them anymore. It is just too darn easy to plop the eVscope in the backyard, check focus and collimation, go inside and flop down in a comfy chair, do a field detection (to let the scope figure out where it is pointing) then start imaging. All this in about 15 minutes. Is the eVscope an astro-imaging rig? Nope … never will be. But the images I can gather from my chair in front of the fireplace when it is 20-deg F, or less, outside are quite satisfying.
