Sony had reached an astonishing level of quality and complexity at this time. Thank you for giving such an detailed insight and for your engaging narrative.

Probably one of the best consumer compact camera in it's day, was really good for low light
@Elecami
@Elecami 2 года назад
Good big lens is critical for that low light performance. Cell phones can't ever get that unless they get thicker.

This camera was a good attempt to innovate and try a new form factor, and it's too bad it had issues and never caught on. Seems like Sony was always trying new things. The '90s and early '00s had so much cool experimentation in design, at least compared to now. Great tear-down. That flash capacitor discharge made me jump too lol. Loved the close look at components with the microscope.

Thanks. Always got to remember to discharge high voltage capacitors. Or you can jump even more. Very dangerous. It is an interesting design that allows a good quality lens. Probably did not catch on due to its size. Compact cameras were more appealing.

That assembly behind the lens is not an ND filter it is for flipping the IR blocking filter out of the way to enable Nightshot mode... as you discovered later. :) Very unique feature of these cameras. I used to modify and resell them (many years ago) by replacing the filter with a clear optical glass so one could shoot IR at all speeds. Since then it's been discovered one can merely use a magnet from the outside to do the same thing! Loved the close-ups of the LCD and sensor. This video will help me repair a 717. Thanks.

Makes sense, you would need to get the IR filer out of the way to use the night mode. Just like in security cameras. Thanks for the info.

Error C:13:01 is caused by the camera's internal memory stick contacts being worn or dirty. Disassembly and cleaning of these contacts usually will fix this error (if you can get to them). If this doesn't work I've heard (but not tried) to use a pencil to deposit some graphite on the contacts of the memory stick which increases the conductivity of the contact. These are great cameras and take great pictures.

Thanks for the info. I'll keep that in mind if I revisit these cameras. Not sure I will get back to them. there is so much other equipment if need to look into first.

Nice that is still working! Most failed due to CCD issue.

Hi unsure if you still have it, I just bought one from a thrift store. Do you know how I’d get the pictures from the memory stick to a modern computer? Thanks!

I have the same 717, the LCD display shows horizontal color streaking like shadows. Can replacing LCD screen fix the problem?
@Elecami
@Elecami Год назад
I am not sure. In the video I tried changing the LCD screen and it did not fix the problems it had with streaking colors.

Sorry I don't know about that. Have you tired a different memory stick or formatting it? Have you looked up what the error code means?

@@Elecami I think I have a solution for my problem maybe someone else can help but I've been looking at forums to fix it and I got to one where they say that the problem may be the maximum memory capacity allowed in the camera and the maximum allowed is 128mb.
@Elecami
@Elecami 11 месяцев назад
@@elwaramay8813 Ah, yes. You might be best to buy an old original Sony memory stick rather than using the newer modern versions.

Do you think it would be feasible to do a image sensor replacement on one of these, just picked one up for $15 and i really want it to work but the sensor is bad. Other than that the rest if the camera seems to be fine, thanks!

How is it possible I did't find your videos before ? I have two of those cameras, at least... Sadly I had to downsize my camera collection, because of lack of space (lots of other stuff in the hoard) and a bunch of them where just decaying, in particular the Minolta film SLRs, all rubber parts became goopy.
@Elecami
@Elecami 2 года назад
Not sure, how did you find it now? Would this stuff appeal to more, not sure how / where to advertise it more? I see you have got a good collection of stuff too. I've got a lot more video cameras to go through and a very large amount of VCRs (100+). It might get boring, but I want to document them at least. I've seen the rubber / grippy / coated parts going bad on some of my stuff, also the multicore video camera cables going sticky, not very nice.
