dude, I can't tell you how many times I've listened to a song so many times and on my 50th listen I notice a guitar melody on the left channel or piano sting or something like that and I'm always so surprised by it because if that's one aspect of a song I missed that means that there's more reason to keep listening to a song more and appreciate an aspect of a song that an artist put a lot of effort in and that most people wouldn't notice. I think my go to is September by Earth, Wind, and Fire because there is so many chord progressions and melodic ideas that are happening almost independently to each other but come together so perfectly. So yeah, I rather listen to something on some crappy earbuds than $8K headphones because if I can find a way to keep coming back to a song despite my inferior equipment, than that song is a masterpiece.

It’s interesting to learn how complicated people made listening to music is. I usually just put playlists of random songs I got from Spotify’s Shuffle and put it on for work and chores or if I’m just chillin. Didn’t know people had backlogs or cared so much about how others consumed it.

I’m a weirdo and I know it. When I was like 7 or something I got my own boombox and a few CDs. One was literally a sampler full of covers of songs from movies. I set up the boombox on my desk, listened to those albums front to back over and over again for weeks, and did nothing but sit there looking at the boombox. I still do this to some extent. I just put something on my phone, lay in bed, and stare at the ceiling. 80% of the reason I listen to music on walks is just to have an excuse to listen to music while not doing anything else (…..besides walking). This doesn’t make me “better at listening to music” or whatever crap. It just makes me weird. Everyone can just do what they like 🤷

Technically isn’t about music, but i used to do something kinda similar as a baby (and still do, sometimes.). Where i would just play with a certain object in an odd way for a while. Like for example: a brush, i would just slide my finger over the brush cause i liked the way it felt. Same thing with a toy monster truck, I didn’t play with it like a normal baby and instead just rubbed the wheel over my finger cause of the way it felt. It’s odd and i don’t know why i still do it, but i’m not really complaining either.

Hot take: one person can have more than one way of listening to music. That's why I usually listen to albums twice: once actively and once passively. Sometimes you want to take everything in. Focus on the lyrics and the meaning. Sometimes you just want to vibe. A good album will make room for both (GKMC is a good example of this imo)

really appreciate the distinction you made between "hey where should I start with this artist" and "UHM ACKTUALLLEE YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO IT WITH BAJILLION MEGA MALUNGO SUPER SPEAKERS AND IT HAS TO BE THE ORIGINAL VINYL ORDER OR ELSE IT'S NOT REAL" I have this whole thing I go through whenever someone asks me how to get into Swans that's meant to ease them into it as best I can, because, like, they're an intimidating group! but it's also more of a general guideline because I know people wouldn't want to have their hand held all the way through because that'd suck. it's more like, "start with this set of albums, it's the least abrasive part of their discography, this specific one out of those is my favorite. then try this set of albums, this specific one's my favorite," etc. etc. etc. but also, like, as long as they didn't do Soundtracks for the Blind first (because while I do love that album it is SO MUCH to take in for the first-timer that it helps to have context first), I don't really care all that much. unless it either gave you the wrong first impression or just a flat-out bad first impression, then it's all fine by me great video bites

@finnaboing
@finnaboing 7 месяцев назад
@@chikinonfrydai it's not an exact science on my part by any means but: - start with The Great Annihilator (best overall middle-point between a lot of what they've done) - then do the goth rock/neofolk stuff (Children of God, White Light From the Mouth of Infinity, and Love of Life) - then try out the revival trilogy (The Seer, To Be Kind, The Glowing Man) - then check out the early no-wave stuff (everything from before Children of God pretty much) - top it all off with Soundtracks for the Blind I know it's a lot and seems like an excess of hand-holding when you look at it altogether but imo this is a path through the band's discography that flows better and is the least likely to immediately scare people away because no-wave is scaaaaaary (at least to me lol) and also, like, if you wanna ignore this you're more than free to, it's just a suggestion at the end of the day I should also mention that this isn't necessarily an infallible system either, it's mostly just off of gut instinct

The frustration of not properly listening to the music comes from myself, not from other people telling me to. I wanna listen to these artists I like and I wanna listen to my favorite piecees and really get to know them front to back, but there's always something that gets you out of your concentration and time is hard to find. There is a right way to listen to music and fully get immersed into it but damn I just can't find the time.

Incredible video!! There is no correct way to listen to music, there is no correct order to listen to music in, and I can only focus on a separate task when I have music on; but I do try to cut off as many distractions as I can when listening to an album for the first time. I will often set aside time to listen to an album I haven't heard before and try my best to completely lose myself in it. Some of my favorite albums could have easily been overlooked and forgotten if I hadn't done this for every new album I listen to. Multitasking while listening to a new album has always resulted in me being confused with the album's pacing, not hearing or understanding the lyrics, and just not getting as much from the song as I could have if I took the time to focus on it. When I get rid of almost all distraction, I really dig into the sound and simply enjoy the music way more. Much of this is caused by my ADHD. When becoming bored by a song, it is very easy to do something else to occupy your mind; but when a song gets boring in a distraction-less environment, I am forced to listen closer and dig out ideas and sounds that the artist made just for this specific song, making a connection to the song, artist, and even the time and place I was in while listening. When I listen to an album with nothing else going on, the music means so much more to me. Of course, there is some music that isn't made for that sort of practice, and I can recognize when an album is made with the ability for the listener to multitask in mind and go do other things while listening, so I take advantage of that when at all possible, but when I know I would enjoy a song or album better in a quiet place, when a song or album "demands my attention", I save it for later. I feel like a lot of people that try to convince others to listen to music how I do do it because they want the artistic integrity of a song to be as unfiltered and direct as possible for everybody. The reason that this is wanted by purists is because those features that come from listening to music without distractions streamlines artistic integrity, which creates the exact emotions and connections that they love music for, like what I love music for. I almost never try to convince people to listen to music how I do because artistic integrity will never be completely undiluted unless you're in the room with the artist making the art. That's why I love concerts. Concerts are the completely raw vision and product of the sound and emotion that is trying to be created fully realized. But when comparing a concert to someone listening alone in a room, and to someone listening while eating and watching youtube, the person listening alone in a room is a lot closer to being at a concert in terms of integrity than the person eating. When viewing it like this, from somebody who enjoys music best like this, it can almost feel disrespectful to the listener and the artist to not give an album as much attention as possible. "This artist spent months on it for YOU to listen to, and you're doing laundry while listening to it!? Are you trying to enjoy it less?" These people (purists who won't let others enjoy music) fail to understand that not everybody gets the same enjoyment from their practices. I hate that some fans will tell newcomers to a band that they need to do all of these things to listen to the band, not realizing that they are gatekeeping. Not everybody is going to be floored after listening to Swans or some shit. I'm not listening to any of their albums a second time. That's too much time to just kinda like it again. I have friends who love music just as much as I do, yet I'm the only person that I know in real life who gives albums this sort of treatment. Most of my friends who love music don't even listen to albums. That tells me that I have more to learn about when it comes to enjoying music, and considering that I know everybody listens to music in different ways, who am I to tell somebody how to love something? TL;DR Listen to music however you enjoy it best, don't let people tell you how to listen to music, I like it best on it's own.

I listen to music while doing other stuff, but I also have times when I just want to listen to an album all the way through bc I heard one song and wanted the context :P but having a set-up for listening to music seems ridiculous tbh, and sometimes id want to listen to a crunched down song with something spinning on the video, like just crispy deep fried music.

I like to knit while I listen to music. It keeps my hands occupied -- until I get so caught up in the music that I have to dance. Then I put the knitting down and I dance. But that's only for active listening, when I want to really soak everything in or discover someone new. I get easily bored if the music's not *amazing* and all I'm doing is knitting. So of course I'll clean, dance, drive, tidy, draw, paint, knit, walk, or whatever doesn't require me to hear my own thoughts. If I need to hear my own thoughts then I have my favorite instrumental albums to keep my ears occupied, so they don't get distracted by random outside noises. Your videos are funny. I like them :)

Instead, I do something while I'm listening to music. I don't start doing chores, feel bored and then listen to muic while I do stuff. I start playing music and then I think to myself "Might as well clean the toilet while I'm at it." That way, I don't feel like I spent all day doing things. I tend to listen to something attentively once or twice, take some moments to fully appreciate it, and then it gets plopped into my playlist of 500+ songs that I listen to on shuffle whenever I'm going into flow, cleaning, cooking, working. The artist might not care, but they did put in the time and effort to make something with a lot of detail, for it to be ignored kinda sucks. So, I personally try to admire a creation like a fine meal before I consume it like chips. It's like a leitmotif in my life, I just hear bits of songs now and I can recall many of the details!

I have three modes. Casually listening and hopin from one album to another. And mode two when I am sitting on the couch and listening to the vinyl with focus with maybe occasionally watching albums of my favourite painters. There is also third "listening to albums on my way from and to work" mode. But I am more focused on the road and my car speakers are not great, not bad but not great.

As an autistic with very bad anxiety. I use music as a coping mechanism when I can’t cope with life, I just listen to my fav artists and it makes me feel better and more sane.

yeah i personally need to absorb every fibre of the work without anything else distracting me. When I listen to music, i want to be my number 1 priority until im done listening, doing other things while listening just makes me gloss over the soundscapes. Is it too much to just do 1 thing at a time instead of drowning in 6 tonnes of stimulus until nothing is fully coherent?

This compliant kinda funny though there is an album out there that actually does want a specific way of listening to it! It's called Deconstructionist by Giles Corey if you are interested and it's an attempt on trying to force someone into an "altered statue of consciousness" with a specific setup in mind. Keep being cool with yo videos!

For me it depends on what I'm listening to and when I chose to listen to it. I put music on when I'm working, but sometimes I'll just sit and listen to it and nothing else. Sometimes listening while working works against me as I find myself getting too enthralled by the music to focus on the work and can't help but sing along.

I’ve recently been listening to Kendrick Lamar albums while doing just anything. I could literally just be breathing then I be like “yk what? Let’s listen to some Kendrick”😂 Funny enough I saw a yt vid on his album damn saying the wrong song order and figured he released two versions of the same album just the order was different so you got a different ending(there’s a good and a bad).

I planning to do a really long trip with my friends so, to fill the 10+ hours of driving I'll have to do, I bought every CD I wanted to have and also made a playlist of other songs. It helps to stay focused and I can't drive without something on anymore lol

Personally I can just sit and listen to music, especially if its something I'm really into at the time or something I am hearing for the first time. A good time i find to listen to albums all the way through is when I'm walking to and from college, or when I've got free time to chill. If i'm doing something though I will probably just put my playlist on as I put everything on there and am quite happy to listen to anything if I'm already occupied by another activity.

This is mainly for Vinyl records, but you don't need the 12 grand set up but you do not want to cheap out with those Record Players you find at Wal-Mart and Target cause records are expensive and those players are infamous for ruining the records

Me personally most of the time when I listen t music I do it when it’s thing where I would get bored or something really quick, for example doing dishes I have always kinda had a bit of a problem focusing on things and my brother running around everywhere doesn’t exactly help so I like to listen to music to keep me focused, or like when I’m grinding a game I do that to keep me focused so my mind doesn’t wander off cuz when I listen to music I don’t really think about what I’m doing as much I just do it and get it over with, other times I like to listen to music while playing games cuz it kinda adds to the experience and in some occasions I just like to chill with it, the type of music I prefer honestly is things like video game ost especially undertale tracks and fan tracks, although with all that aside I think you should just listen to music the way you want to and what you want to listen too cuz nobody’s really stopping you it’s you’re choice

yeah i'm that nerd who listens to a song to analyze it, and i can tell you why the song was written the way it was because i know music theory and blah blah blah... the thing is if i try to listen to music how a normal person would i can't anymore. my brain will stop everything it's doing to listen to a piece of music with it's full attention to pick the song apart. please help i can't stop it! i sometimes hate being a musician/producer...

I'm both. First time listening to a song I tend to just sit down and listen to it, then I put it in a playlist somewhere and listen to it again when it is queued randomly and then I am normally doing something at that point.

I don't really mind how people listen but I just wanted to admit that I am someone that habitually zone out to listening to music Most likely because I tend to image a story to view in my head whilst listening to the song. So I end up day dreaming rather than trying to understand the lyrics as other people who tend to sit still. But anyways if I am not frozen, I am probably dancing to the song

I'm no audiophile, I just throw on a pair of headphones and listen to whatever I feel like at the moment while staring into space or else I can't focus on it whether there's vocals or not. I treat listening to music no differently than watching a movie, though that's absolutely not for everyone. I'm sure I'm in the minority

I only listen to music when grinding through long programming/drawing/etc. sessions, but I CAN NOT THINK if there is music, especially lyric'd music, I need to pause it if I need to work out a problem.
