Examples of melodic shapes in vocal melodies. Writing a good vocal melody is hard. How do you write a vocal melody and what makes a good vocal melody? Melodic shapes can be a great place to start creating melodies for a song. They don't require you to know much music theory and can be a big part of making melodies express the emotion of the song and its lyrics. In this video, we look at melodic contour examples and how to make a good vocal melody using the Flatline or static shape melodic contour.

These videos are meant to break down the songwriting process into easy to use tips, techniques, and tools that spark creativity and help you apply them like the pros. I do my best to make videos that share the 'secrets' of writing great songs without holding anything back.
My main focus with this channel is to pass on the tools of the trade that I have learned and found to make a big difference to my creative flow and songwriting. There is an old saying that goes "everybody has one great song in them", I hope to show you that once you know what makes a song great, you can apply it to all the songs you write. Start from the heart, follow your gut, and revise with your mind.

Let me know if you fall into the 'using the same melodic shapes' in every section of a song?
@realcarlspartacus

I had been composing metal songs for some years and just now I learned about melodic shapes. My compositions improved A LOT, but now I compose without bonds of a genre. So far I learned that we must use the same shape on chorus and verse, at least in part of it , to obtain the Prince / Max Martin effect, is that right?

@@realcarlspartacus It's right if it feels right! There's no objective answer if we don't know what you're conveying in the music you're writing without hearing it & reading the lyrics.

Excellent!!! The genius of these videos, in my humble opinion, is that Tony doesn't bamboozle you with many different melodic shapes. I really love the way he takes one per video and shows it too you from so many different angles using great examples. Bravo Tony! You've really hit your stride!

This is a genius concept. I love this concept for songwriters because it is more or less theory-agnostic. Of course it works in the context of progressions, modes, modal borrowing, etc. but fundamentally our brains are responding to the tension/release inherent in melodic shapes. This totally lines up with the predictions of gestalt theory / auditory scene analysis work of Al Bregman.

Thank you so much, learning a lot from your videos. Any chance you could look into the works of Tim Bergling (aka Avicii)? He was a huge musical theorist, and his lyrics along with vocal melodic shapes are genius. Would love to know what you might find in his works, especially on the latest album. Thank you again.

I want to ask a question and the question goes like this how can I make my listener's feel sad emotion.
@akashhhhhhh
@akashhhhhhh 2 года назад
What makes u feel sad? Just pour out them feelings in your lyrics
@SongWritersChopShop
@SongWritersChopShop 2 года назад
Great question Godswill. If only it was one that could be answered quickly. First you want to be clear about how you want the listener to feel. sad' is a bit vague but it's a good start. Is it the sadness of loss?, the sadness of beauty?, or nostalgia? you need to feel this emotion before you can express it. Then it's about using all the elements of a song, the lyrics. the melody, the chords, the tempo and rhythms...(there's a lot more) using these elements in a way that expresses the emption. Have a look at these two videos and let me know if they give you some ideas. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5rGTNyM_7b8.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Je6Da1kCy7E.html I think these will start to give you some idea. Get back to me, let me know how you get on and feel free to ask more questions.

When you are sad, write the song then. Also, minor chords immediately bring a seriousness to the mood. Try experimenting with a recorder and record what you are playing and many times when you listen to it later you will think, "hey I didn't even know I did that." And, keep a notepad or some writing device with you so at all times so that when you have a flash of inspiration, of a melody, rhythm, or lyric, you can write it down immediately and you won't forget it later. Lastly. if you are feeling it, it will come through and across. Just be honest with your creativity and it will lead you to honest songwriting. If you aren't feeling sad, then simply write the song which you are feeling. Ultimately the result is to write a great song expressing an honest emotion, whether that be sad or happy or whatever. We all have emotions which is universal. But we all don't have great songs. Good luck !!

This is very good and informative. But writing melodies for songs shouldn't take so much thought if you're singing soulfully anyway. It's like James Brown said. Can, you feel. If you feel it, a lot of the technical stuff goes out the window (for the most part). After watching this video, I understand why TAXI Music critiques are such BS. TAXi's critiquing is based on some Harvard perfectionist BS when simple pop and even R&B aren't always that technical!
