I own these headphones for the last 7 years. The headband cushion and the ear cushions were worn out but I got some new ones from Senheiser and they still look as good as new. They are fantastic for studio use.

To replace the cable you'll have to unscrew the drive housing and the cable is connected the the headset by a little adapter with three little pins (like computer motherboard wire connectors).. I've replaced mine a couple of times and it takes 5 minutes.

Just got them and I love them. They are not the most comfortable ones, but the sound is clear and crisp and the lows, mids, highs and everything in between are clearly distinguishable. The sound is never getting messy and details stand out. 8 out of 10 to me. I use them for producing.

You know, considering being a man in your position, I believe you're very much used to studio headphones. But even as I was used to cheap consumer grade headphones, they weren't good enough for me as a musician. I got the HD 280 Pro for Christmas 2014 and my first impression was amazing. These headphones may not be consumer grade, but they are still showing regular headphone consumers what sound is supposed to sound like. Dynamic range and the high fidelity of these headphones compared to say Koss Porta Pro is close to divine. Plus the bass is not too loud like in most consumer grade headphones, but it's still clear. If people here are used to regular consumer grade headphones and even the notoriously overpriced Beats, you have to try these headphones or at least similar headphones from Sennheiser or brands like Bose and Beyerdynamic.

Both the 380 and 280 are amazing at the end of the day, I don't think there is a massive difference between to two. I am going to get 280's for Christmas but there is no right or wrong answer

From some of the comments, some don't understand that these follow the input signal closely - this means that the 'phones aren't biased towards more bass or treble than there is in the input to the 'phones. one of the bid reasons I bought a set was because I wanted some decent 'phones for listening to music, etc on the PC AND for LAN gaming where there is a lot of background noise - for the latter they were especially good and, indeed, a number of friends and aquaintances who also tried them actually preferred these to the much more expensive high end 'phones they were using. the only problem I had was after several years of abuse the head bridge spring broke - probably due to being repeatedly dragged off my head with one hand - me bad!

Thanks for a great and helpful unboxing and review of these headphones which gave me exactly what to expect to get from these headphones. I do also plan on getting these headphones for my birthday in a few months, but before I was gonna make a purchase, I had to do some research in order to know if it's the right buy, and this video made me more willing to buy it. And as a Music Producer like myself you gotta have the right audio hardware in order to make the music that is pleasing to your listeners. And as for the off-the-shelf speakers I have now, they're not great for listening to any kind of music, and now that I've got a good look at what these headphones are, I'm more than excited to get these!

@ScottyD
@ScottyD 8 лет назад
zomby | 2k15 Absolutely... if you're doing any "production" you will want reference monitors for your studio. My favorites are the JVC LSR series. www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&keywords=lsr%20speaker&linkCode=ur2&qid=1454598333&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Alsr%20speaker&tag=iw09-20&linkId=E6PJOHWT4LPVA66I . If you're in a small home studio the 305's will do you well. and of course studio monitoring headphones as well like the Sennheiser HD280 Pro's that I review in my video are incredible.
@zip5644
@zip5644 8 лет назад
Thank you! I just purchased the Sennheiser HD280's as soon as I saw this comment. Also are there any good reference monitors for a a budget of around 100$-150$?
@ScottyD
@ScottyD 8 лет назад
+zomby | 2k15 Ive listened through a few low cost reference monitors and I still go back to the quality of build and sound of the JVC LSR. Also remember... if you playback commercially released music or audio, it has already been colored with compression and equalization therefore you won't get the true FLAT response that these Sennheiser headphones are designed to deliver. These are made for the studio, not to listen to commercially released audio that is already mixed and mastered for consumers.

Thank you, very informative video! I am an Audio Engineer and I am currently looking for a decent pair of headphones. So far the Sennheiser HD-280 would be my top option but I've also checked the Sony MDR-7506, both are nearly the same price and have very similar descriptions regarding sound quality, though I have always wanted to get the Sennheiser HD-25ii cause I have tried them already and they sound fantastic, they are absolutely perfect in my opinion but I am aware they are better for DJing and have been told the same. @bobcatt2294
@bobcatt2294 6 лет назад
Un-boxings in general have there place and I stay away from un-boxing videos. I would add in your statement, under your video, how they have held up - that is a benefit. I notice that there tend to be cracking where the adjustable band meets the sleeve - they may be micro cracking, please check if that is the case with yours. The pressure exerted over this bracket assembly - overtime, can cause cracking of the plastic. Will be awaiting your response.

I bought this for listening to music as an upgrade over my shitty $20. Sony headphones. It was a huge improvement. If it wasn't that would be nuts. Lol. Anyways i was listening to Led Zeppelin on Tidal which is a lossless streaming service. Led Zeppelin just remastered there albums for the service and a few other lossless services outside of the u.s. and at the end i caught a lyric i never heard in the song! I'm also using viper audio with this. However yeah the chord is kinda heavy and if you use this with your phone you will want to wrap the chord around your hand to stop it from pulling down on the prong. I used the twist ties to make it into a loop that i can just put my hand through. I also record once in a while too so this could be cool for some of my guitar riffs as well. However I will be using them mostly to listen to my music around the house.

I wonder, if you wouldn't recommend these headphones for casual listeners, which headphones would you suggest them to use?
@ScottyD

Sennheiser makes some great prosumer high end audiophile headphones. In addition to them, Beyerdynamic, Grado, Austrian, AKG, Sony, & Shure all have fantasic prosumer mid and high end options for in-ear, over the ear and closed headphones.

@rbmanb
@rbmanb 3 года назад
@@ScottyD specifically the HD series, what would you suggest as good headphones for consumers?
@ScottyD
@ScottyD 3 года назад
@@rbmanb Buy what your budget will allow. The HD559 are great headphones at a $99 price point, but honestly when it comes down to what you buy and "like" are very subjective. It's hard to say what is what I would suggest for you as my use-case and preference may be different than yours. I personally like in-ear dual-driver earbuds for music listening. Shure makes some great ones but there are plenty of others out there as well. Again buy what your budget can afford but don't base your purchase on price alone. That doesn't mean greatness or awesome sound. I have a $20 pair of dual-driver generic earbuds that sound great to me.
@rbmanb
@rbmanb 3 года назад
@@ScottyD thanks for your comment. The only thing, is that the hd559 costs at least 200usd where I am. I would have gone with in-ear if I could but I can't. I'm using earplugs every night, so have to let my ear canal breath during the day. Sennheiser HD 280 pro just might be my only option, as I have a tiny head, and those headphones seems to have the highest clamping force of all of other headphones I've seen online, and that I know of. If I go for anything less, it would fall off my head, like the M40x did. So I've tried the 280 today, and it just barely fits. Although causing me ringing ears at even the lowest volumes, I guess I'm not used to it yet, and it will get better with time. The only other thing I can think of is on ear headphones, or on-ear headphones that's big enough to go around my ear (my ear is also tiny).

i never understood the opinion that a pro headphone thats supposed to be flat response are not fir for general consumers.. If a consumer wants to hear the music as an artist intended they will do perfect. If you want sound freq amplified, use your equalizer. But...these pro headphones including this one is not flat at all. its kinda dark coloured imo. i have far more neutral headphones that are meant for hifi. I like pro because their usually very tough and cool looking. so if you want neutral...dont get these. if you want a comfi tough and truly great sounding headphones..get these.. there awesome...trust me. I listen to metal, rock, electronic and 70s music...they will eat it all up...use it on the go...cable is a bit heavy but it works fine and reduces sound nicely

My kid is learning how to play electronic drums! Is this set a good set for that matter? Sorry I'm new on this!!!
@ScottyD
@ScottyD 8 лет назад
+emilyarelyvictor1 They provide good sound isolation and grip and I would think they would be good for monitoring. The key with drummers is you want to isolate the drum noise away from your ears to protect your ears (with acoustic drums) while still being able to listen to the music you're wanting to be a percussionist to. So as long as they don't overdrive them from the drum kit amp. If you're wanting to have a mix with your drum kit and a playback track you will need a mixer to combine the two signals.

I don't understand, I am getting these headphones soon, but I will be using it for listening to music. Wouldn't one(me) want to hear the sounds of music to sound the way the professionals mix the different frequencies? I just thought these would be a change to what I usually hear from the regular headphones I hear like overused bass amplified feeling with too much tssk tsssk at the top
@ScottyD
@ScottyD 9 лет назад
These headphones will give you more of a flat response to your listening experience... unlike that which you would get with some consumer brands like Beats or Bose which are designed to color the music with enhanced lows and highs. That said, studio produced CD's and MP3's are already so compressed which will not be a true representation of what it actually sounded like at the time it was recorded, that along with the device you are listening thru and any further equalization you may be doing will also have an effect on how the music will sound thru the headphones. When in a studio, you are monitoring a lossless flat format and thus a true representation of what was recorded.
@chrispewpew
@chrispewpew 9 лет назад
Scotty D I get what you mean about it being designed for uncompressed/ flat formats and all, but, I did not think compression would change the levels on highs or lows all that significantly
@ScottyD
@ScottyD 9 лет назад
Compression will most certainly affect what you hear. In fact the over compressed music of today is why most people don't realize but it's a portion of the reason of "ear fatigue". Where you can only listen to music for so long before your ears need a break. That along with the over processing people do in their own equalization and listening device choices... and lastly WHERE you listen to your music also has an effect on the overall listening experience. A full true lossless format, raw and unprocessed is vibrant and dynamic... it flows with true lows and highs like the waves of an ocean. Ebbs-and-Flows if you will... A lifelong friend of mine and a fellow broadcaster as well did a great video showing WHY CD's and for that matter why current "MASTERED" digital audio sounds so bad. Here's a link to his video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3TlQo9k827c.html
@chrispewpew
@chrispewpew 9 лет назад
Scotty D Great video, Thanks, and yes I agree with your friend. The way the audio ends up being formatted does make it sound different, but compression,I still don't understand why compression makes a big difference, what does compression actually do to the audio track? The remastered CD your friend talked about is that due to the compression itself or something else, like someone re-compressing the audio recordings and changing the overall settings without properly listening in on the track.
@ScottyD
@ScottyD 9 лет назад
In simplest terms... hyper compression or over compression squashes the sound. It limits the dynamic range of the actual instruments and vocal portion of a track to the point of almost no dynamic in the music. If done poorly it can also muddy the track to the worst case scenario that you can lose some elements of the song entirely... it's known in the industry as the "Loudness War". Producers feel that if they make their track just a bit louder than the others then their track stands out. While that is true from a psycological observation that the "louder one" sounds better when in reality it creates ear fatigue. A great example of this would be... IF you can ever listen to a great Analog LP on a great HiFi system and then listen to the same track digitally remastered as a MP3... your ears will be shocked. I would compare it to listening to something that is comforting your ears and letting you enjoy it vs a jackhammer ramrodding a track into your head and forcing you to listen to it.

Great video. I am kinda confused though. My entire music collection is in lossless formats(flac, ape) and with my 30$ headphones(sony mdr zx300) the difference between lossy mp3 is not really THAT much. Will these ones allow me to hear some fine details in the recordings? I trust that I can use a good equaliser to enhance some of the elements a bit.
@ScottyD
@ScottyD 9 лет назад
Keep in mind, lossless and flat are two different experiences. Lossless is usually how it's saved after mastering. Flat is before any processing is added to the original recording.

What would you recommend? and do you think the HD280's would do the job?

I personally think they would be good as they are Studio Monitoring Headphones so what you hear is good flat response... but you will need to try them out for yourself and see if they provide you what you are looking for. They provide good sound isolation since they are over the ear and since you can use a variant of plug sizes, it should be accommodating as well.

@ScottyD
@ScottyD 9 лет назад
I have not tried the 380's so I can't speak for their comfort. What I can tell you is many online retailers list the 380 as a discontinued model. So be careful... The specs between the two are extremely close so if you have very accurate ears (tested in a hearing exam) then you may be able to discern a slight difference between the two. However for the most part it will come down to personal preference in the end. en-us.sennheiser.com/professional-dj-headphones-noise-cancelling-hd-280-pro en-us.sennheiser.com/monitoring-headphone-studio-professional-audio-hd-380-pro

There are no different 280Pro's on the Sennheiser website so I assume that if you are seeing different packaging you will need to look further to see if they are different in some way. If you have a pic of the package of the one you are referencing, email it to me. I'll take a look at it.

Would you recommend me these headphones for rock music production? I'm not a producer =P... I have a small youtube channel (not this one) where I make rock arrangements to videogame songs and I want to give my listeners the best audio quality possible. thanks

What your viewers here on RU-vid after you process the audio in post and after RU-vid jams on its compression will sound totally different than what you would hear in these headphones in a raw format before you edit the audio. It also depends on what audio you're using... if it's pre-produced loops and tracks it's more than likely already processed therefore what you would hear in these headphones would already be colored to some extent. Therefore, my response to your question would be maybe?

Oh don't worry I don't use prerecorded tracks, I use EZdrummer, VST plugins for organs/keyboards and my guitar and bass. I record everything from scratch. So do you still recommend them?

+Super Charged4life Are you looking for "consumer" headphones for casual listening or are you looking for "professional studio monitoring headphones"?

What would you recommend in this price range for CONSUMER experience? I would like to listen to a music and feel power, clear bass tones. I am afraid that I may be dissappointed if I order Audio Technica mx40, or these STUDIO MONITORING headphones because some reviewers said that they all produce flat sound (which I read - boring, dull). I am not a DJ, I don't need this for studio monitoring, I would just like the best sound experience for 100$.

Milos Momcilovic Some great headphones for consumer listening are the AKG K-99's... www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001GF7WRW/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001GF7WRW&linkCode=as2&tag=iw09-20&linkId=FCX54OFQRZCONRVZ

Scotty D Thanks a lot for this suggestion. I already ordered this morning m40x and Asus xonar DSX sound card. I guess I will have to play a bit with equializers to get the sound I prefer. I know that m50x-s have better bass but they are over 200$ in my country (double as much than m40x) which is not acceptable for me. Thanks again, keep uploading videos.

So you say that these headphones let you hear the music exactly as its been recorded with no frilly enhancement. So say if I actually WANT to hear my music the way it was recorded without base boost or whatever would these be the headphones for me? Cause I actually do want to hear the music like it's supposed to sound like. Thank you for your response in advance.
@ScottyD
@ScottyD 9 лет назад
Remember, any music released on CD or streaming is not "raw" and has been processed. Therefore these headphones will not yield "raw" listen playback. IF you're talking about raw recording in a studio setting PRE any processing, and playback for listening, then yes they will yield a great result.
@ShinYoshao01
@ShinYoshao01 9 лет назад
So... The music will sound, worse, with these headphones? Damnit. They are already on their way to my house.
@ScottyD
@ScottyD 9 лет назад
I'm not saying it will sound worse, but certainly any pre-processed music that is commercially released is "colored" therefore it's impossible to strip out the processing with simple headphones. But you can certainly compare commercially released music in these studio monitoring headphones to consumer headphones and will notice a difference.
@ShinYoshao01
@ShinYoshao01 9 лет назад
Oh okay. Thanks for your input on this. I guess the only way to really know for sure will be to actually try them, which will probably be sometime this week. I will let you know how they work (or don't work) out.

I got these headphones in yesterday. I tested them out on a few classical recordings I had, and I could hear stuff I hadn't heard before. It was wild! I decided to compare some songs with these and the headphones I was using. Boy oh boy, It was like night and day! I was hearing stuff in the songs, like instruments and background vocals and such that I haven't ever heard with just about all of the headphones I have used in the past. I don't think I can ever go back to regular headphones now. I've read in some websites to allow 20-100 hours for a "burning-in" period. I'm guessing these need to break in like a pair of shoes audio wise?
@efmarmaronilla

so what can you suggest for consumer grade headphones?
@ScottyD
@ScottyD 10 лет назад
Efmar... before I answer that, I will need to know a few things... 1. What is your budget? 2. What kind of music or playback do you tend to use these for primarily? 3. Do you travel on airplanes or are you in noisy places when you intend to use these? 4. Do you prefer, in-ear, on-ear (not completely covering the ear), over-the-ear (similar to the HD280's)? 5. What device will you primarily have the headphones plugged into?
@efmarmaronilla
@efmarmaronilla 10 лет назад
Scotty D thank you very much for replying! 1. my budget is up to $200 2. I like EDM, R&B and POP 3. Yes 4. over-the-ear 5. Itouch, Iphone and Laptop

@efmarmaronilla

Efmar Maronilla I can also get along with on-ear
@ScottyD
@ScottyD 9 лет назад
Efmar Maronilla The AT M50's are great headphones but they are also "monitoring headphones" so if that is the configuration you're after then they're a great option.

If you're still having problems, that should be because there is no built-in mic. This is meant for studio work where you'd have a standalone mic if you need it.
