When my mom was dying from cancer I had to stay with her the entire time to make sure they would give her her pain meds. They came to know they couldn't tell me they would be there or let me check with the doctor. Advocate aggressively for your loved ones. Don't leave them alone or think they will "take care" of them. I think someone in that situation should stand firm and be stern when talking with medical staff. I think family members should record the interactions with the staff for their records. This is sad and unfortunate. I remember Judge Hatchett lost her daughter in law after she had a c-section. She had internal bleeding. It’s heartbreaking and angering because this shouldn’t ever happen when it can be prevented. Thank God you had an advocate cause so many may not understand that they have to be the voice /patient advocate for family members. RIP to all those who lost family members.😔🫂🙏🏾🕊️💐❤

Racism in health care is engrained in the US. I had severe back pain and it took me about 45 minutes to get out of bed. Went to the ER at the VA hospital 2x in the same day and got no medication. Finally I went to a different bad hospital in my city out of desperation. The doctor gave me an injection in my hip and the pain went away almost instantly. I asked him why the pain did not go away when I received an injection at the VA. He stated that the injection has to be injected in the exact place indicated by the patient. The nurse at the VA asked where the pain was coming from and I put my finger exactly where the pain was but her injection was made in another spot. I did not complain because when in severe pain hope springs eternal and one hopes no one taking care of you has malice towards you. That hope was in vain. Thank God for the physician at the other hospital. May God bless him all his days.

I had a bad experience in a VA Emergency Room and will never return. Waited for hours (in the middle of the night), just to be sent home in pain and given a laxative. I felt ignored and dismissed by the doctor. The next morning, my fever worsened and I was nauseous so I went to another doctor. I was immediately given an IV with antibiotics and told I had diverticulitis (an infection in my colon). Grateful to God the doctor that treated me just listened and figured out the problem. Plus she addressed my pain appropriately too...hallelujah.

Its not just racism, its misogyny. Do black male patients get treated the same way or just the women? Its very common for male doctors to dismiss female pain. When female health became a business and went from the hands of midwives to male doctors, do you know how many women died needlessly after childbirth, from infections, for centuries, just because doctors didnt disinfect/wash their tools? Happens to women, doesnt affect them, they dont care. 🙄

I saw a woman who had open heart surgery, cut straight into her rib cage,crying and begging for pain medication while the nurse is being condescending and telling her that she’s receiving acetaminophen (Tylenol) , a weak muscle relaxer and nerve damage medication through her IV which should be enough for the pain after being sliced open all down her chest. Its not really because some [blacks] are addicts. That's what they say. There are more white opiod addicts who get prescribed opiods more so than black folks which is why the opiod problem got out of hand. They treat us this way out of hate. Its not incompetence. it's racism.
@consciousanfesiashapsnikof8688
Thank God, husband reacted. I have the same issues with people indicating "Oh, you don't look like you're in pain". My response was to many people: "Does it look like I am menstruating?". There may be some science behind the Asians. Some Asians don’t metabolize opioids well and may either need a higher dose or multimodality pain control. Although science may back up the Asian-pain theory they should not be disregarded if in pain. There is no evidence saying that black people don’t feel pain so I don’t know why these doctors keep this BS up. I’ve also had to advocate for my black patients as well. Also told the patient don’t let up on them. If you’re in pain you’re in pain . That Tylenol ain’t helping . That 0.25 mg of dilaudid that I had to beg to get ain’t helping.

Almost died lost a lot of blood and they couldn’t find one of the surgical tools, left me with blood gushing out and they forgot my husband was in the room watching all these happen. The doctor also induced me because he wanted to go on vacation and couldn’t wait any longer because I was pass my due date. Another red flag! BE CAREFUL people! I have 3 adult children I raised mostly as a single working parent and as a Black female Board Certified MD I realized in the late 1980s that "Medicine was no longer "Healthcare" but was fast becoming a "Sick care" model that benefits financially from people being chronically ill. Today's Medicine is NOT controlled by your doctors who are treating you but the Corporations that own the hospitals, practices and clinics Pharmaceutical companies and the Gov't offices such as CDC, FDA, NIH, Insurance companies etc. Doctors are only EMPLOYEES of the system and are REQUIRED to follow protocol designed by the system which basically are for the purpose of profit. Doctors are not getting "rich circumstances but are pushed to work long hours sometimes having to see as many as 45 patients/day during working hours. I have taught and encouraged many people to practice self- managed care over the past 20 yrs. years but unfortunately it mostly falls on deaf ears because !people lack "self discipline" and would rather trust the doctor to "fix them. If you have been in a similar position and you don’t know how to start speaking up for yourself I want to remind you that at the end of the day, those nurses/ doctors are just human just like you so they are prone to human flaws. Don’t feel timid by them they just have a uniform on. I’m not saying pick a fight, that’s not right. Simply voice your concern to them by being more stern and matter of fact. You got this. In Dallas, interestingly enough I was treated beautifully by all the white medical professionals but my black anesthesiologist and later on a black hospital pediatric nurse were both very callous in their care for myself and my daughter to the point where I had ptsd from the whole epidural debaucle where she actually took several minutes digging the needle into my back bc she couldn’t find the right place to administer the medicine and as I’m writhing in pain tells me to stop moving. 7 years later I still feel the phantom pains of what happened. The nurse who cared for my baby daughter while sick in the hospital was so rough with my baby I ended up filing a complaint and hated to do so bc she was one of the only black nurses in the ward. I’m a educated single mother of color, I was articulate, They thought I was a crack head off the street and treated me as such. No one helped me at this hospital after I’d collapsed unable to support my back upright. They told me they were going to call the police on me if I didn’t leave the premises immediately- I couldn’t support my back upright at all to walk to leave. I believe the first doctor should be sued for neglect and lose their license. Her symptoms alone; based on her medical history and the fact that she recently gave birth should be a clue that she was dealing with a blood clot. Most people who suspect an embolism even if they weren’t a doctor. It’s disgraceful how she was treated. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the community. You may have saved someone else's life by encouraging them that it's okay and it's your right to advocate for your love one. As a nurse I encourage my patients to voice their concerns when they don't agree with their plan of care or to continue to demand for answers in a respectful manner. I'm proud to work with a team of doctors when they are approachable and I can say, the family is requesting clarification on the plan of care. We are a team and you have choices although they are not always presented to you unfortunately. Poor care can happen at any facility if you get a combination of doctor that is dismissive of your symptoms and a nurse that doesn't advocate for you. My biggest advice - ALWAYS have an advocate with you. You will receive better care. Congratulations on the birth of your baby and I'm sorry that you had to go through this life threatening experience.

I can attest to what her husband is saying regarding the treatment of sickle cell patients; specifically our black women. As I have firsthand experience with the hospital staff taking their time to address patients in crisis; providing care for their pain. I understand the opioid crisis and being sure you’re not just administering medicine. However something has to give. I’ve witnessed my wife in labor and in a crisis at separate times of course. By far the crisis seemed to be so much more painful than labor. It felt so bad seeing her basically disabled by the pain. Then on top of that having to literally fuss with nurses, doctors, and any staff member that would listen to try to get her medication and water to help with the pain. I apologize for venting I just truly feel this families pain. I sympathize with all individuals with this disease.
