Hosted by New York City Council Member Carlina Rivera in Manhattan on the morning of September 28, 2022, this ceremony for Doctor May Edward Chinn Place celebrates the East 29th Street co-naming and the life of Dr. May Edward Chinn (1896-1980). The event was held at the street's First Avenue intersection near Bellevue Hospital and includes the unveiling of the permanent Doctor May Edward Chinn Place street sign and a proclamation from New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
In 1926, Dr. Chinn became the first Black female graduate from nearby Bellevue Hospital Medical College, now known as NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Dr. Chinn then opened a private practice because hospitals refused to grant admitting privileges to Black doctors. She went on to do groundbreaking work on detection of cervical cancer in women.
Remarks are delivered at the ceremony by Council Member Rivera; Bellevue Hospital Chief Operating Officer Marcia Peters; Aklia Chinn, a cousin of Dr. Chinn who came in from her Los Angeles home for the event; Committee to Honor Dr. May Edward Chinn Co-Chair Michelle Deal Winfield; Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine; State Assembly Member Harvey Epstein; NYU Grossman School of Medicine Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion Dr. Joseph Ravenell; and, representing Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Westchester Alumnae Chapter President Kanika Morgan and New York Alumnae Chapter President Jimyce Johnston.

Congrats to Michelle and all that took part to bring this to fruition. Awesome to see African Americans finally be recognize. We are so oftened overlooked due to racism and biases. Great that school students are also there to learn this history.
