As with most of the people here, I was introduced to the Cappelletti family through the movie Something For Joey. It was an eye opening and sad event. I purposely looked for this video because I had never seen the entire speech. Even though I know what was coming, tears filled my eyes again. John Cappelletti was a class act whose speech is the one that all others are compared.
1949 game 1 world series I have a Jackie Robinson signature on ticket stub Because he sat next to grandpa at ice cream parlor after the game! Old Reliable hit a walk off in 9th for 1-0 Yankee win.
You can see the pain in his face as he makes his way through his speech, done with grace and dignity. I highly doubt that there are 5 players in the league today that would be able to make this speech without completely losing it. We live in a very different world today, one with many unthankful and greedy players who couldn't care less about the game but are all about the money. It sure has changed a lot since I started watching in the mid 1970's, and that for the worse.
I remember the announcement. I remember the made for TV movie. I watched it several times with athletes of mine. And in 2024 I am still crying. That is one of the most squared away athletes I have ever known. His on field abilities earned him the trophy, his qualities as a human being earned him my deepest respect
There is a famous pic of Joe D standing on the 161st station platform overlooking the renovation . From that same photo shoot they took a pic of him with a bat in his hand standing approximately where home plate would be
@@ihl8608 I'm not sure how a comment on someone's stage presence is considered "talking politics." Cap was inspiring and Ford was not. I'm actually thankful for Ford because his lack of personality led to the rise of Ronald Reagan. Now THAT is politics!
Thank you so much for this film! What I'm immediately seeing with this is Lou's inherent shyness and humility, with his head down and him moving around his spiked shoes, he certainly appears uncomfortable with all of the adulation. Also, note him clapping when Ruth is introduced. Although the differences between these two men have been well documented, I believe Lou had great respect for the Babe.
Couldn't with you more. Having been raised in the Bronx, remember, going to The W.B. Dive In when I was a kid. Remember the grandstand and outside windows when I started attending in 1968.
If biographers are to be believed, Lou didn’t want to take part in the ceremony, but was more or less compelled to. He suffered physically through the ceremony. Joe McCarthy had Babe Dahlgren watching Lou closely and if there was any sign of Gehrig starting to fall or collapse, he was to rush over and catch him.
McGraw banished Frank Frisch to St. Louis. Banished Frisch went to World Series in '28, 31, and 34, winning the last two. McGraw never went to jackshit again.
What a beautiful piece of property, wasnt born in the 50's..but went there alot as a kid in 70's, and we owned some ok, horses in the 80's who raced there. Remember running thru the backstrech entrance on the side, and hitting to grandstand to watch warmups..and ripping out the Nathans coupon in the program for later, as that was the spot across the road, we would usually hit before heading home..thanks for sharing..
Sounds like the Parents don't do a good job teaching their kids 😂 the great DIVIDED STATES of EMBARRASSMENT LAND OF THE SHEEP HOME OF THE SLAVES 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I grew up in UD. Went to the same grade and high school as John. Great speech. I will always remember Mrs. Cappaletti. Might be one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. She ran a little water ice stand a block from my house in the summer. I miss that.
In the West Virginia game after 3 touchdowns, John was taken out of the game. At some point after that, it was relayed to Paterno that John had promised his brother Joey 4 TD's . Paterno returned John to the game and on the play that John scored the 4th TD an old Penn State fan that told me he was at that game said that Penn States Offensive Line EXPLODED off the line on that play and would have moved the Iron Curtain of the Pittsburgh Steelers on that 4th TD for Joey !
