Exercise is one of those recommendations clinicians love, but what is the evidence that it can help our patients with depression? There are wonderful new data from the HUNT Cohort Study (Nord-Trøndelag Health Study), which followed over 33,000 healthy individuals in Nord-Trøndelag, Norway, starting around 1985. I went on a Whole Foods plant paste, diet to lower my cholesterol, and it sold a lot of problems for me. I’m on medication for depression and have been before I started this diet. I think it’s the best thing I’ve done but exercise helps me with mood and sleep. I believe as the science shows can happen. I started the diet at age 48 seven years ago and it fixed blood pressure, total cholesterol, LDL, weight, blood pressure and high resting heart rate. My initial goal was to stay off statins which 100% is going to happen. I’ll stay off.

Here is the problem, the average person (including me) when you say exercise, would directly think of the gym, which is associated with body ache and time. No way that sounds better than taking a pill, especially if the pill works for you. As a community, if we change the definition of exercise to just anything that raises your heart rate above 100/ 20 min a day, everyone would be able to figure something cardio out at home and it will be easy to adhere to it daily. This is literally one of those cases that the phrase "lowering the bar" means something positive.

@@travisroper218 I had those same fears and kept going at it for 3 years on and off. Now I’m getting consistent and exercising 4 days a week. My depression is almost gone and I’m achieving things and have a desire to do more. Exercise does help. Its the mental blockage that we all have to work through to make that change. Hello, have suffered anxiety and depression most of my life. Did lots of excercise in my 20s. Obsessively so. When sustained anxiety kicked in, I found I could excercise. My anxiety went through the roof. Muscle tension so bad, could hardly move afterwards. Didn't matter what excercise I did, would start out okay, after a few weeks, anxiety and tension always ended up going through roof. Switched to yoga for years, all types. Sometimes it helped, others it didn't. Latest breakdown 4 years ago. Very depressed. Started doing sun salutations every morning. Helped depression tremendously over time. A year or so ago, added swimming. Same thing happend, anxiety eventually went through roof, as before. Luckily had a fit bit. After a lifetime of experience, and fit bit, came to conclusion that I have to limit my effort. Had to reducing no of lengths swam in a session by half. I'm a bit ocd. Eventually, I stopped excerting myself excessively. After a session, if you suffer from anxiety, you need to feel relaxed and tired. If you feel buzzing, or great or wide awake, and on top of the world, you've over done it, and even though you feel great afterwards, next day you will pay for it. My terminology may be incorrect, but during excercise, you have to do it calmly. You can't afford to run in adrenaline/cortisol. You have to pay particular attention to not excepting yourself. Its very hard to discipline yourself to do this. You need your muscles to be fatigued after session. If you go for it, you are stessing yourself physically, thereby increasing your adrenaline/'cortisol levels. Keep doing it, and you end up a nervous wreck. This is why the study shows people's anxiety hasn't improved. It's because people are excepting themselves too much, they go beyond muscle fatigue, and run on adrenaline/cortisol. I can do 40 lengths of breastbone in 45 mins. I can keep going way beyond muscle fatigue, running on adrenaline/cortisol. I know do a very calm 20 lengths in same time period, with rests in between. My anxiety/tension is now much lower. I've accepted a mindset of exercising for mental well being, instead of fitness, trying to improve. I still find it very hard to get it right. It's so easy for my mind to race when exercising and try to hard. Mindfulness while exercising helps. Message is, don't go for the burn, or giddy joy from excepting yourself too much. The old folks you see slowly jogging have the right approach for mental wellbeing from anxiety.
@tusharmane1262
@tusharmane1262 9 месяцев назад
I'm currently suffering from this exact condition. When I feel anxious, I go for runs or gym. I get the adrenaline rush. But that didn't last long. Soon the anxiety returns after the adrenaline levels recedes. So yes, exercise has become a kind of psychotropic for my mental health. And I think that's where the problem is. I need to develop a healthy relationship with exercise, and not an obsessive one. And this is really hard if you've been accustomed to use exercise as a sort of coping mechanism.
@michellechandler3567
@michellechandler3567 8 месяцев назад
This makes so much sense! I feel best when I go for a 20-minute walk outside a few times a week. I do this first thing in the morning before breakfast. It's the right amount of exercise for me. If I overdo it, I'm a nervous wreck. If I don't do my walks, I'm a nervous wreck mixed with depression.
@nigellegg7509
@nigellegg7509 8 месяцев назад
@michellechandler3567 yes, excercise can definately help, but you have to do it well within your limit/tolerance. As soon as your muscles are fatigued, you rely on adrenaline/cortisol to keep you going. When that happens, you have gone too far. If you keep doing that, you end up with elevated anxiety levels, worse than if you did no excercise. Trouble is, excercise means different things to different people. To some, its to run as fast/far as possible. The elderly you see slowing running have the right idea.

The answer is stop thinking and go the gym! You have to overcome the negative (intrusive) thoughts about yourself. I had the heaviest depression you can even imagine. I stil suffer from mild depression and anxiety, but the gym can lift my depression and anxiety with 80/90%. When the good feel chemicals reach the brain, you think positiver about yourself and the future. Everyday you can find me in the gym for at least one hour, how bad or how depressed and anxious I feel. How more depressed and anxious, how more I want to the gym.

I think the problem is “knowing the patient”. Medicine practiced by checklists, with patient as a subject upon which to practice, might be objective. It might work in cases where the cure is purely chemical. Say, trivial pain relief or fever mitigation. However, where the disorder extends to the mind, the doctor is as much a subject, and the remedy as much socio-cultural, as it is pharmacological. Trust, understanding, responsibility, routine, and validation have an interplay with motivation, moods, and mental health. A doctor who can build trust with a patient, and convey she understands him has a higher chance of affecting a cure with the same treatment.

If I don’t at least jog a mile most days of the week, my sleep suffers GREATLY, which in turn makes my depression MUCH worse. Even if you feel like crap, lace up your tennis shoes, do some light stretching, and just go for a jog. Don’t make a ton of goals and try to run 5 miles at a record pace- just go jog until you don’t feel like it anymore. Then, do it again the next day..: and again the next day. Eventually, you will realize how wonderful it really is. When I’m in one of my major “brain fog” depression episodes, a good run knocks out the cobwebs and helps (sometimes a little, sometimes a lot).

Julii, Since it is a mind issue reach a state of equanimity where nothing disturbs you. For a relaxed life without anxiety sit on a chair, back and spine as erect as possible, hands on your lap with palms upwards, close your eyes and do nothing. Be still without moving and observe your incoming--outgoing breath and body sensations for around 10-20 minutes. Be as still as possible. Plenty of thoughts will come but slowly negative thoughts will reduce. The mind is reprogrammed to reach equanimity. Do twice daily or even more as per your convenience. In life practice not over-reacting to any situation. Enjoy meditation without expectations and your life will transform. Make it a daily habit. Best wishes. Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

Stress increases your cortisol levels, high cortisol level causes depression, so giving yourself too much exercise like that might increase cortisol level instead, i advice low impact workouts or yoga that doesn’t require too much movement that stresses you out.

People with higher sensitivity to anxiety finds it difficult to exercise as they are repulsive to sweat and increased heart rate. But exercise helps it a lot.

Which exercise is best for reducing anxiety or depression... Is it walking or running or aerobics or gymming or anything else?
@robrobrobrobify
@robrobrobrobify 4 года назад
From my personal experience, any exercise which is very cardio heavy. So running, cycling or both and doing that 4-5 times per week minimum, plus the gym as well. It may seem a bit much and overwhelming at first but that is what you need to change your brain chemistry. An interesting tidbit is that you'll notice that suicide occurs very rarely in athletes, and I couldn't find one case of an endurance athlete ever committing suicide. Exercise changes your brain chemistry and makes it impossible (with the proper amount of exercise) for depression or anxiety to exist. To add to that, you build up your own strength through exercise, both mental and physical and that gives you the confidence to believe in yourself, and to trust yourself in any situation. Then there is the benefit of looking great which helps a lot, and feeling that your body can do anything, and in turn your mind. Going to the gym 2-3 times per week won't help, running 2-3 times per week won't help, nothing in life is easy and stopping depression and anxiety requires work only you can do. Exercise has to be part of your life daily lifestyle for this to work, but when it does it really turns you into an amazing and capable human being. Healthy body = Healthy mind I really recommend reading ""Can't Hurt Me'' by David Goggins to get you started.

I need help. I started working out and gained muscle. But I still feel depressed. It's been 2 years and my depression is not going anywhere. I do feel good working out but I wish my depression also went away. I started working out because my friend suggested therapy. Therapy was so expensive. It's exclusively for the rich people. So I went to the gym. Gained muscles changed my body but it didn't fix my issues. People said gym fixes everything but unfortunately it didn't for me. I thought with a better body everything will be alright but it didn't happen. Is there a way to get rid of this ? I can't afford therapy as it's very expensive.

Champ I been suffering with depression myself for years also. Over the years I got more mature and found hobbies etc. Just got a naughty German Sherperd who gives me a hard time he jumps a lot on me still training him to stop that bad behave but my dog makes me smile everyday. We all think different but just try find activities to keep your mind occupied go read a book etc meditate find a hobby you love. I was suggest by my doctor to take depression pills but I refused it was not easy fighting it.

Just a suggestion. When I was depressed after my divorce, I did see a psychiatrist and it was terrible. I stopped when he didn't listen to what I said about how the medicine was making me feel. So what I did was, I made plan to see at least one friend every weekend. I did that for 3-4 months. It helped pulled me out of it. Perhaps you need more social face to face with your friends, perhaps more time in nature, maybe more fun physical activity like dancing, or some creative outlet like drawing/painting/pottery. Just some suggestions.

To everyone who's struggling right now, please know that JESUS LOVES YOU. HE DIED FOR YOU. He wants to help you and give you peace. Please surrender your burdens to Him and allow Him to move in your life. "Because he loves Me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges My Name. He will call on Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him." (Psalm 91:14-15) Please hold on to this bible verse because WHATEVER GOD SAYS, HE FULFILLS.

Generally, exercise is not the people's first choice in treating or preventing anything as fundamental as it is based on millions of years of humans evolutionary physiology. I've been working out since 14. Wrestling, Volleyball, Marines, and hour every morning on the elliptical. Take the stairs and walk to the grocery store. Anxiety, depression, what's that???? Give your body what its design for and what it wants; some sort of intense physical resistance
