The splenius capitis is an important stabilizer of the craniocervical region. It ipsilaterally rotates, extends, and contralaterally translates the head and neck.
The splenius capitis is often weak and/or injured. Especially in whiplash patients. This can cause debilitating pain behind the ear at the craniocervical junction. Further, because the lesser occipital nerve pierces it, this nerve may become entrapped, causing occipital neuralgia.
The muscle may be strengthened by adding a light resistance to the ipsilateral temple with your hand, while gently and slowly pulling the ear toward the dorsum. It is beneficial if the therapist palpate the splenius capitis during the exercise, to ensure that it activating. Whiplash patients will often need a few attempts before they get it, due to the impaired state of the muscle.

My neck is feeling good most of the time! Went to the chiropractor,, did these exercises, tried to remember to stand up straighter with shoulders back and use a flat pillow. Rarely have the neck pain now unless I have done too much work outside which would strain that area. Then I re stretch the muscles.😊

Guys, i am a 100% sure that all of you have Brachial Plexus adhesions, search the youtube on how to release it because i did it harshly and it worked (basically i used to stab really massage and stab the tension points behind my collar right collar bone) there is a great relief, but i need this to be done to me, unfortunately i am alone.

Otherwise, consider doing an Atlas Orthogonal adjustment after doing all the investigations that would tell you that your Atlas is misaligned.

I believe I've had an injury of this muscle at the start of 2020 and it's atrophied significantly, can this cause instability which leads to loss of focus or pressure in that area? It's hard to stay present and grounded with this, I can also only relieve the pressure by pushing on the area which improves ROM

Hi there. I also seem to have pain below the splenius capitus around splenius cervisis, perhaps even the semispinalis thoracis, which radiates out to the bottom of my shoulder blade. Is it often necessary to additionally train these muscles as well? If so, is this exercise sufficient or should i be doing something more comprehensive like your craniocervical extensor exercise? Love the videos. thank you. EDIT: Just did a few sets of your birddog exercise and it seems to directly affect the area in pain. Im guessing it's the iliocostalis 👌

How to differentiate between levator pain and spl. Capitis? Going few years ago i injured “something” in my neck while doing weighted dips. Since then whenever im doing pull ups or dips there is a good chance of reccuring pain in what i think is levator. I get difficulty in turning my head right. I do bunch of things like “towel pulls” face pulls etc. to rehabilitate the area but seem always to be quite prone to injury. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, great informative channel btw!

@@phophophoph it’s better but think it’s always going to be injury prone, but i use light bands around head and turn my head to strengthen neck muscles and just trying to do more upper back exercise to keep good posture. But if i get lazy or do incorrect form on some of the exercises it’s still a risk. Good luck!

Hello. I came on today looking for something to help me with the area of the splenius capitas muscle and the trapezius. I was diagnosed with aoccipital neuralgia, and last year I had decompression surgery. The surgery helped, but I still have problems in those areas with pain and tightness. I just went through evaluation’s with Nuro and Nuro ophthalmology because my eyes for years have pain 24 hours a day. They tell me it’s probably coming from residual pain. I do know when I have spasms in the trapezius and neck. It will sometimes go into my eyes. I am hoping to find exercises that could eliminate this. If you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them thank you. Dave

I have done head turns like this and never felt activation of that part of the neck. It seems that what is done before this exercise as preparation matters for some patients. A specialist feels his own body and might assume that his experience translates to the patient. At the same time the patient might be stiff and stuck in some weird activation pattern of neck musculature. Thus for the patient the same motion would be performed by different muscle action.

At least i have something specific to show when i go for treatment next time (ive had this for five years now). Thank you! I guess i have a trapped nerve i the splenius muscle.

I suffer from numbness of the left side of the body. I have trouble walking and the body seems to be out of sync, so I turned the head to the left whilw walking and the body "found" fluid gate more or less. This might be due to the activation of splenius capitis and the definetaly issue of the neck because muscles of the neck seem to be switched off or activated in a weird pattern.

I have splenius Capitis syndrome for one year, mostly aggrivated while sitting. When I release this muscle my pain disappears completely but the right side of my body goes numb for five minutes and then the splenius locks up again and numbness subsides but not entirely. I am positive for thoracic outlet syndrome. MRI of upper cervical had minor narrowing, arthritis and minimal bone spurring. Head MRI came back clear. I also have cervicogenic headaches triggered by looking up. Is there any way I can be in contact with your clinic?

Is it possible this muscle can cause a pulling sensation at the base of skull which is then followed by a snapping noise around c7 followed by a very temporary relief of this tension in the base of skull? Only for the pulling sensation etc to come back a few seconds later.

Hi! I recently discovered your channel. I have had major neck pain on the right side going up into my scull with vision and balance problems plus many other symptoms and shoulder pain for over 4 yrs and getting worse. I have degenerative disc disease in c5/c6 and nerve impingement causing radiaocpathy down my right arm. Dr's and Chiropractors tell me there's nothing they can do. I have to sleep with a soft collar on. I am 70 yrs old. I've been to PT several times but felt I'd always get too much inflammation. I just don't know where to turn. Used to be very active now my muscles are slowly shrinking. I do not know what to do anymore. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you for your wonderful info.
