Drs. Albright and Stephenson-Famy will review the cardio-respiratory and musculoskeletal adaptations that occur during pregnancy. They will discuss myths related to exercise during pregnancy and rules of thumb for exercising safely. This session will review the limitations surrounding the evidence on activity restriction during pregnancy while also talking about which pregnancy symptoms and complications may require activity modification. Finally, they’ll talk about the relationship between exercise during pregnancy and birth outcomes.
Meet the experts
Catherine Albright is an associate professor of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of Washington. Her clinical and research interests are in cardio-obstetrics and cardiovascular disease during pregnancy. She is an avid runner, biker, hiker, and skier. She continued to do most of these activities during her own pregnancies and uses her expertise and experience to ensure others can, too!
Alyssa Stephenson-Famy, MD, is an Associate Professor of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of Washington. She provides clinical care for people with medically complicated pregnancies with a focus on prematurity prevention and multiple gestations. Her education interests include reproductive physiology, organ system adaptations to pregnancy and safe delivery.
