EXPANSION: ACC Fighting FSU, Clemson Jump to Big Ten

Here is the latest college football expansion and realignment chatter: Florida State and Clemson continue with their lawsuits vs the ACC with an eye toward jumping to a more lucrative conference like the Big Ten. We believe a settlement is the only way out of this college football mess. However, ACC commissioner Jim Phillips is not going to sit by passively and watch his most prestigious college football teams jump ship to the Big Ten without a fight.
EXECUTE THE TV DEAL!
Speaking to the media this week, Phillips said the ACC media rights deal was agreed to and celebrated by all parties involved when signed. He feels the deal should continue to be executed… all the way to its 2036 conclusion. We will share our latest thoughts on all of this.
PENN STATE AND RUTGERS WAY TO GO!
Penn State football recruiting continues to play "win some and lose some" with some high profile recruits. Overall, 2025 is shaping up nicely. They did, however lose a 4-star player to Rutgers. Have you noticed Rutgers football recruiting?? They have a top ten national class of their own coming in. Greg Schiano has been impressive.
BREATHE EASY MICHIGAN
We also check in on a couple of Michigan football commits who took visits elsewhere. One of them was even taking a look a rival Michigan State and that got a lot of people's attention. But it looks like the Wolverines can rest easy for now.
CLASSICS
Finally, we look ahead to the last weekend of June with our preview of the Big Ten Network's Big Ten Classics on Craig Shemon's Locked on Big 10.

Jim Phillips (right or wrong) is going to “Fight Tooth & Nail.” Which means Clemson, Florida St or anyone else will have to go through the Courts in order to leave. @@tarheel7406 Let's not forget that the ACC's past is mainly Carolina Blue and now UNC is getting screwed by this too. IF the current leadership at UNC had any spine they would join both FSU and Clemson and the ACC would have no choice but to cave. UNC's financial future is being gambled on by sitting tight in the ACC. Then again, IF they didn't think that FSU and Clemson were going to do all of the heavy lifting for them so they can hopefully leave on their coat tails would they be willing to take such a huge risk? I'm from NC and one side of my family is all UNC grads. It's not like they aren't questioning the lack of financial intelligence with UNC's lack of movement. And, they fully understand why FSU is willing to do anything to get out of this ridiculous deal. Let's say only FSU and Clemson are able to get out, where will UNC be in 10 to 20 years? Man don't know where you get your information from but after ohio st , Michigan just woke up ask app state and penn state who else in the big 10. Each acc team received 45 million each this year. The big 12 teams received 30 and Cincinnati, Houston, BYU and central Florida only received 18 million. When the acc deal was made the 33 million was on par with the big10 and sec. ESPN, the next couple of years purchase all the sec sports programming. This forced cbs to find a new conference to broadcast and the big10 was the only league available. NBC who only broadcast Notre Dame wanted in on a league and the big10 was the only available conference. Sec was espn pac12 was 2years out the acc was locked by espn and big 12 was few years outside. So let's be for real, the big10 is no better but was in the right position at the right time. Fox paid you normal pay it was CBS and nbc that raised the pot to 1 billion. Big10 have 3 or 4 decent teams, same for the sec. Acc teams put just as many players in the nfl as any other conference. Money is driving expansion not the competition in the conference.

I'm unaware of any evidence that CLEMSON or FSU was even contacted by the B1G during the expansion that yielded MARYLAND and RUT. UVA, UNC and GATECH were all contacted. Nevertheless, that WASH/ORE were invited prematurely and the buzz over CLEMSON and FSU all suggest that the B1G has determined that both UVA and UNC are either indefinitely unavailable or already secured by the SEC. I'm rather confident that the B1G had considered both UVA/UNC secured when/if as part of its longer-term plans, so there would be some scrambling.

The CALFORD/ SMU bashing on "locked on" is getting over the top. First, SMU played Oklahoma pretty hot in NORMAN last year, a place the SEC has hardly ever played, and SEC teams that never conferenced B12 haven't had much luck. Even the teams are left in the B12 haven't had much luck there. But, different story for ND/CALFORD-7 wins in Norman , OK. CAL's been pretty bad at football for a while but I wouldn't be surprised if they pull the upset in Auburn in a few months, and at least they've won 1 P5 CHIP since the new millennium, which is more than can be said for half the SEC. Stanford, on the other hand, can be sneaky good at times. They are 5-5 at the Los Angeles Colesium over the last ten road games to USC. They played for the "Legends" trophy against Notre Dame since 1988 (33 games) That may not sound all that impressive, so let's poke around college football and see how they've done against ND? The last 33 games the B1G has played against ND 12-21-0...... Impressive How about just Michigan last 33 games with ND 16-16-1 ... It's not the historical premiere rivalry for nothing How about USC last 33 games with ND.....15-17-1....Oops, they both got caught cheating, Let's adjust for vacated games 14-18-1 How About SEC w/ TexaHoma? In the last 33 games vs. ND, many at Bowl level. ....13-20-0 How about ACC last 33 games vs ND...4-29-0...I included bowl and champ losses because it gets really embarrassing if you just include scheduled games. How about this 12 team pseudo power conference? 33 games vs. ND ... 0-31-2 Florida, Oregon, Washington State, Washington, UCLA, Utah, West Virginia,TCU, Baylor, Iowa State, Minnesota, and Maryland....Zero wins? c'mon, try harder people, it's only the sneaky Domers! Then there's Stanford, playing ND in Legends since 1988 - 20 games where they couldn't even win half their PAC schedule, yet still managed to beat the Irish once or twice....13-20-0...... and they had to play them in South Bend on even years when they they already had 5 conference road dogs....unlike USC who made sure they got the road trip to Indiana on years with only 4 PAC road games. Stanford doesn't need the TV money....They're just looking for worthy institutions to conference Olympic sports with, that don't cheat.....and their football team is still good enough for 3-2-0 against the Buckeyes, and give undefeated Washington 4th quarter scares. 😮

Two thoughts on why the SEC is publicly claiming it does not want FSU (but would take some of the Triangle schools): (1) The powers that be in the SEC don’t want to further loosen their grip on conference hierarchy by bringing on FSU. Only ND rivals FSU’s football power rating on a national level. Claims that FSU doesn’t add to the bottom line is rank pretense. UNC, by contrast, is a lightweight so no harm in accommodating them to counter the swelling B1G even if such a move doesn’t make economic sense. The “new state” model is a head fake - it’s a stale metric given how college football is consumed. FSU is a national brand with top 10 eyeballs on a consistent basis. Viewership for FSU/LSU the past two years says it all. If you believe the SEC doesn’t want to own that, then I have a bridge to sell you. (2) ESPN can’t afford to take on premier football programs given its financial troubles (especially after taking on TX and Okla). UNC - which is currently a financial and organizational mess - comes cheap whereas FSU commands top dollar. The ESPN/SEC media machine will never admit this but it deserves attention.

The SEC will take a combination of UNC/UVA or UNC/NC State long before they will take Florida State and Clemson. You are Big Ten bound. And I will also add that your comments are spot on. I am a UNC grad and live close to there now. We have never been nor never will be a football school. There are three states in the country where basketball is bigger than football. NC is one of them. And when the UNC/ Duke game approaches that's all we talk about. Sure, we'd like to have a good football team but if we win 7 to 8 games a year we are perfectly happy. FSU, on the other hand, must be good at football. It is not negotiable. Sadly, all this stuff is mere politics. This is just a guess, but I'd say a lot of the power brokers in the SEC don't want FSU because they don't want stiffer competition than they already have. And you know South Carolina doesn't want Clemson in the SEC.
@tarheel7406
@tarheel7406 2 дня назад
a) The SEC has rejected FSU many times over a number of decades. Its position isn't new and has been known since Day 1 of this story. b) It's very likely that UNC will get a full share in either the SEC or B1G, while FSU will have to settled on a partial.

It will be interesting to see how the Triangle schools adjust to life in an SEC environment that will grant them second-class status and couldn’t care less about its Tobacco Road roots. The Big and the SEC are in a class by themselves. So why keep comparing the ACC to them? The battle is what happens at the new level just below the P2. IMHO you very correctly pointed out it was a good deal at the time, especially given the driving force behind it, the ACCN which everyone wanted. So it is simply, yes it is a bad deal now for several teams but THEY SIGNED A CONTRACT TO 2036. So to get out they have to pay something to the "poorer houses" in the neighborhood because they signed the contract to lift the neighborhood. AND I do believe ESPN is fighting behind the scenes to keep FSU and Clemson in the ESPN family. In the end those 2 will have only one potential settlement, go to the SEC. The other option is a series of lawsuits ultimately ending in a class action of all the ACC members who won't get a better deal in a federal court. That might end in a price so high no one can leave the ACC

Measured by estimated actual media value and top-level competitiveness, the ACC remains a peer Tier 1. It will deplete down to the Tier 2. The B1G has most likely reached its highwater mark.

I’m a BIG alum and generally speaking a fan. But the ACC had a stellar year in NCAA titles, let’s not overlook this fact. BIG tends to flop in basketball (too many second place finishes) this century. Hell, in M. Hockey they’ve yet to win a NC as a conference. Former WCHA conference mates have jumped so far ahead the past decade in their new conference: NCHC.

If it's not sustainable, then FSU and Clemson need to pay the exit fee. These are sophisticated academic institutions, one even has a law school that teaches Florida lawyers about contracts. If contracts are not respected, Americans cannot do business.
@unc0mm0n2

This makes no sense. Contracts are made to be broken especially when certain clauses are unclear. Our courts have ruled on many bigger contracts. This will have literally no effect on business.

Contracts are broken all the time when one party does not hold up their end of the deal. In marriage it is called a divorce, in business it is called a law suit. Too bad the ACC has had two very $hitty leaders in Swofford and Phillips. Swofford took a bad deal so his kid could save Raycom and Phillips continues it by not pressuring ESPN for a better deal when it comes time to "look in".

Clemson is not an AAU school. BIG will not take them. FSU just got in
@jakinthebox7309
@jakinthebox7309 2 дня назад
Forget the AAU argument! Two high prestige academic institutions like Stanford and Cal, are both AAU members, are now the top ranking academic schools in the ACC, as they were in the PAC 12. Neither school received a Big Ten invite. Stanford, by the way hasn’t been a historically great power on the gridiron, where it really matters, but their athletic achievements in most other sports is #1 on the NCAA Championships list. The BIG is looking for teams who have a balance of historic achievements and tradition on the gridiron, geography, and academics. Yes, all BIG members are/were AAU members (Nebraska recently lost its accreditation and reportedly is working to have it restored). The BIG is chasing after UNC/UVA as a package because of the media market they sit in, their academic strength and because both schools have a strong winning pedigree in basketball. They would rekindle strong regional rivalries with former rival Maryland, another school not historically great on the gridiron, but a historic traditional power in basketball. The B1G also wants ND because it is a traditional power in football, it’s a midwestern school seated in the heat of the conference, ND brings eyeballs, it has a historic of rivalry with current new team (USC), and a history of fierce rivalries with current regional teams, against some of whom they have a losing record (Michigan, Mich St, Nebraska, Penn St, Ohio St). (FYI-ND actually cancelled its Nebraska series and replaced Nebraska with USC on its yearly schedule because the rivalry had become seriously nasty and out of control). ND is academically strong and it recently received its AAU accreditation, yet for years the B1G has been chasing them, willing to take them without it.

As of today, the B1G hasn’t officially extended an invite to an ACC team. You will not find a single article anywhere on this from a respected and reliable news source. If it were true, it would be all over ESPN, sports radio, all the cable/satellite TV sports channels and your local TV station sports report.

@@tarheel7406 No ACC team has received a B1G invite at this point. The B1G wants UNC/ snd UVA for their strong academics, the media market eyeballs, and their winning basketball pedigree. The conference is aiming to reestablish the UNC/UVA/Maryland basketball rivalries. ND, a midwestern school that sits in the heart of B1G country brings eyeballs, a winning football pedigree, and it has or has had historic and fierce rivalries with USC, Michigan, Mich St, Nebraska, Penn St, Ohio St. (ND cancelled its rivalry with Nebr and replaced it with USC because the games had become seriously nasty and out of control). When did FSU become AAU?
@tarheel7406
@tarheel7406 2 дня назад
a) I see that the host finally described the media deal situation more accurately. It was considered good at the time; however, while an inflation risk was obvious, it's been far higher than anyone would have reasonably expected. b) The ACC is treating UNC, CLEMSON and FSU for planning purposes. c) The neighborhood analogy is appropriate; however, the core B1G has reached peak value and is already shows signs of depreciation. The greater Southeast is appreciating.
