Great video - thank you. One nit to pick, I would never get under a vehicle lifted by just a floor jack. Wiggling a part, bumping something, gravity, etc and at best you get a crushed chest and at worse, you end up dead. It only takes 5 seconds to throw a jackstand under there!

I’ve spent a career in avionics maintenance. Troubleshooting wiring and making a repair like that always made for a great day! Even more so when nobody else could figure it out.

Watching you under that truck with just the lift jack keeping you safe is going to give me the heebie jeebies the rest of this day.

As a now retired Electronic Technician, your journey on this truck shows that on modern vehicles, a strong electrical skillset is mandatory. This is the first of your videos I have watched and from what I have seen, you seem to know your way around automotive electronics. Kudos.

Any professional level tech could have diagnosed and repaired this within book time if they had just followed the repair process from ANY factory or generic service manual, it’s a shame there’s so many hacks in this line of work, I get some people have hard times with electrical diagnosis but that could have just been found with a good visual inspection, most wire break issues I’ve came across are found visually before the meter even comes out of the tool box this would have been one of them, I would sell this truck back to the old owner if they wanted it back and needed it

I had an 04 Escalade i bought new. I had it for 12 years, 280,000 miles, the only thing i ever did to it was oil changes, tires, brakes, front wheel bearings, and just 1 fuel pump & that was at 250,000. Never a starter, never an alignment & it drove perfect, no shocks, no exhaust, no water pump or t stat, i never even flushed it, never touched the trans, never changed the plugs or wires, never touched the rear end, it never even leaked a drop of anything & it still looked & drove great the day i traded it in. Great vehicle!

Jared, YES, we would love to see you do all of the maintenance, repairs and upgrades to the Escalade EVS steal-of-a-deal you got...go through it, fix the leaks, do the brakes, fix anything that's fairly worn out, loose, making noise like the power steering, muffler, whatever. That's actually a nice rig with lowish miles, no rust to speak of, it's got some life left in it for sure, it's worth putting a little money into and you can entertain us and educate us in the process. ;)

I used to do zone buy back vehicles at dealerships, it used to get funny when three or four of the same sensor boxes were on the front seat when the zone rep brought the vehicle in. Most wiring problems were caused by an earlier repair however a few were factory mistakes. Good job following the repair sequence and showing how it’s done.

Very few shops are willing to pay for a really good diagnostician. These people either go into another field, open their own shop, or work for pennies somewhere. Also most shops have their favorites within their own shop, and it usually is the least skilled but most fun to be around tech, leaving the sharpest techs to doing all the mindless dirty work for little pay. Don't ask me how I know.

If said experts say they can’t fix a second generation Escalade, then said experts aren’t experts…. I immediately thought fuel pump or a crank sensor.

I have the 2002 GMT800 escalade, Black AWD 6.0 V8, these trucks are bulletproof and were highly used in private transport, and VIP venue haulers back in its days. And there are a good amout of these 2002 - 2006s still running strong on the roads with the original motor and trannys in them. Just do basic and common maitenence intervals and replace things when they need to be - and IT WILL LAST!!! But I do understand that there are some cases where trucks do have there fair share of oddities and so on.

"You came out of that hole, go back in that hole" sums up at least 50% of my frustration working on vehicles 🤣

This takes me back to my teen years, we lived and worked on The Queensland, Australia, Sapphire Fields. (From my book.) Another miner in about late 1961 was camped in the New Rush area had a 1932 Chev ute (Pickup for you guys). which had broken down some weeks before. He arrived at Dads shop on foot, he had acquired a 36 Chev for parts but very little of it was compatible. He suggested to Dad that if he could get his 32 going he would give us the 36 as payment. Dad was too busy to take up this offer so sent me. I drove the guy back to his camp. (Remember I was only 16 going on 17 but I knew how to time an engine, knew the firing order of a 6 cylinder engine.) If my memory serves me correctly, both cars had the ignition systems completely pulled apart. Starting on the 32 reassembling all the bits, checking the timing which was all out of plumb. I had his car going in no time and good to his word he said I could take the 36. My point is, go through things step by step, until the problem is found. I eventually finished up being in charge of a fleet of buses, late 70s 80s and 90s. All self taught. Ted from down under. Good video thanks.

Neat video and great outcome! I am on my third 5.3 with three 6.2s (all three were pearl white Escalades) sprinkled in along the way since 2001. All are impressive motors. No issues and hard to kill. Your 6.0 proved it again. Nice truck! My last 2016 Escalade Premium turned into a 2022 Silverado LTZ. Needed a truck.

Two things have me blaming the mobile mechanic: "the mobile mechanic went to change the steering angle sensor and somehow almost took off the oil filter" and the location of the break at the steering box with the wiring pulled out of place. I think the mobile mechanic who clearly had no idea what he was doing went "steering angle sensor. Steering box. Let me pull the nearest harness down to find the connector!". When he couldn't find a connector, he probably went flailing around (hence the oil filter debacle) and never put the wire back. While later you get the rub through

I saw a trick on another channel. I have an 04 yukon denali, basically the same vehicle. Spent a fair amount of time wrestling the starter in and out. Very simple trick, remove the tire and splash guard, stater is right there, you can reach the cables to remove them. Once unbolted, come right out, no having to hold your tongue right to get it out below. Never even have to get under the vehicle.

Checking the power, ground, and signal at the sensor connector should have been the first step before even bothering to take the old one out. It would have saved a lot of time.

Thank you Jared for a very informative way of diagnosing a continuity issue. It's too bad the mechanics that looked at it before couldn't be thorough enough to find the problem. Love your videos.

My friend has been driving his under $1,000 F350 for over three years thanks to, as Jared put it, sweat equity and plentiful cheap parts. The previous owner got a huge repair bill quote from the dealer and wanted it gone. The deals are out there, but you have to keep looking.

awesome video. for Myself the first step in figuring out a car issue after doing a scan with my cheap $20 Bluetooth obd2 scanner is to confirm the sensor/electronic codes with a $2 multimeter in continuity mode I have dealt with too many old crusty cars to throw a part at a issue without first checking the wiring to a part. its not too hard to find wiring diagrams , I made up some custom needle probe wires to test connectors and this has potentially saved me hundreds of dollars. for example my two most recent fixes on my jeep compass the starter wouldn't start and I had Christmas lights knowing this is a common issue with jeeps and their terrible relay placement I knew to remove the front fender well cover and check the relay box only to find the thing riddled with corrosion falling apart, didn't even need to pull out the multimeter, but if I didn't know this issue that would have been the perfect place to start looking with one. a couple months ago the same compass started throwing throttle codes, I removed the connector checked the wiring and confirmed there was no issue with the wiring, ordered the $60 replacement and boom fixed the throttle body issue, but after looking over that harness I noticed some wear on points(but not all the way through) and threw a few layers of electrical tape to keep the loom extra protected in those points with a little wear after 160,000 miles. now I shouldn't need to worry about them wearing through any time soon but also know to keep an eye on them and quick look them over when I change the oil, or refill my wiper fluid. you don't need fancy tools, a basic entry level scanner and multimeter is good enough for most wire diagnosis/repair jobs, but lets say I found a break in my harness and things weren't working after a quick patch of the wires I might borrow a proper wire diagnosis tool, or hand off the job to a professional I trust letting them know what I found and ask them if they can tell me what else could be wrong. by fist doing my own continuity check and finding a break in my harness I can save the shop I might hand the job off to a couple hours of shop labor, either I pointed them directly to the issue, or just ticked off a box in the steps of finding another wire in some other spot that I missed but they are aware of and find quicker.

Man I love me these older Big American SUV wagon things! Just comfy family cruising eating miles on a relaxing road trip to the nearest national park. Glad you fixed this!! Hello Jared and thank you very much for this video. I very much enjoyed your diagnosis track - which is so rare nowadays - and was delighted that you identified and repaired the problem, on camera.

Thanks for sharing a great video. As a diagnostic professional (I don't work in automotive but do a lot of diagnostics) I can shed some insight for viewers on a couple of things as/re "Experts Said It Couldn't Be Fixed" specifically: Firstly, bc you bring it up first and emphatically, a lot of people don't realize this but diagnostics is a specialty that not all general garages are equipped for. Most have a scantool, but no scope, and if you're not trained on that or don't have the equipment then you're not equipped to diagnose a canbus fault or anything that doesn't show up in a basic scan. So if you take your car to just any garage and don't check to see if they can do complicated diagnostics, this will totally happen to you! Second, most flat-rate shops only will allot a certain amount of time for diagnostics, and if you can't find the fault in that time, you refer the client to a diagnostic expert (like a dealer). This becomes a problem if the garage isn't a diagnostic specialist themselves (see above) - it'll be definitely less than 4.5hrs to pull a harness apart. So there's definitely a reason a shop full of mechanics can't figure it out. They're likely the wrong kind. Thirdly, and in this case most importantly, from a professional standpoint the question at hand in a case like this is not whether it's possible to fix a car but whether it can likely be done to a standard that can be guaranteed. This is why if you own a car that is beyond a certain age or mileage or condition that is deemed within its life expectancy, a shop won't work on it. You just reach a point where so many things are marginal it's impossible to address them all and send you on your way with confidence it will make it to the end of the driveway! When you're the shop owner holding the bag on a repair guarantee this is a real issue. Yes I see and appreciate that you found a bad CKP in a reasonable time and made a cost-free (if we're not counting labour time) repair to the harness in under two hours and I would nonetheless double-down say that if a diagnostic specialist like Car Wiz or South Main Eric had had a crack at it, the car would have gotten fixed and would never have been sold but the owner needs to know to look for someone like that in the first place and have realistic expectations of what a shop can do.

I bought a 2004 Yukon xl and about 5 months into owning it I had the same problem and its sat for about 2 years now, I've looked high and low to try and solve the problem even going as far as taking it to gmc themselves. now im determined to get my baby back on the road finally thank you

Nice wiring detective work. I used a range of wooden blocks which I slide under the car or wheels and being wood don't cause damage, you can still leave your jack in place but use a fail-safe.

You should probably add a Jack stand and throw on some glasses working under there! Odds are you won’t need the Jack stand but it could save your life. Been under a lot of vehicles and definitely always wear glasses!

I feel your pain Jared. You are better at wiring than I am though . I have had to do wiring on my wrecked 2011 Mustang and on my 2005 Mustang to the crank position sensor. It's something I don't like to tell people I'm good at lol😂. Have a Happy New Year!

Always best to do a contanuity test with light bulbs or a mega, as with a DMM you could just have one strand of wire and it will show OK.

Happy to see Jared go into Technician mode to resolve this issue. Majority of dealers have mechanics, not technicians (those who know what I mean, understand the difference between a technician and a mechanic... ) Jared is a Technician. Always use your scanner tools to read data on sensors if they are available when a code is set for a sensor. For sure J, you made a QUESTIONABLE part change impulse diag!

Good job lad... im glad u had scanner...id of guessed it was fuel pump or sender...ive experienced those running for a period of time then conk .. wait a few mins and it runs again.. when they are dying..they heat up and conk ..cool down and work again. 👍 i think a good lesson to this is to hv a 1/4 tank of gas at all times to keep sender cool.

I would like to see more videos from you on RU-vid so make sure you have extra support under the car and don't rely on your hydraulic jack!! they can break spontaneously! or a person comes with his finger on the relese trade. Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics would approve this repair. Curious if you swap out the original sensor if it was a true "no parts required" solve. The Shop Supervisor(s) definitely deserves to be ferried in luxury! $610 can leave a lot of room for 12 mpg fill ups

When I was a kid my uncle got a smoking deal a 1969 roadrunner. The guy he got it from was told the engine was junk. My uncle fixed whatever was wrong for cheap and had a great car.

Love this generation Escalade such a good looking car and really reliable

A little tip for moving beached whales... I use a breaker bar on the lug nuts to spin the wheel/propel the car. There are obvious limits to what you can do before it snaps a stud, but it is how I get them up my driveway.

Crankshaft sensor was my first thought... I'm not an mechanic... but do spend a lot of time talking to my excellent mechanic (Norfolk UK)... Have had similar sensor problems on other vehicles... Interesting clip.

The so called experts said to take it to the dealer simply because they didn't want to mess with it.

I like this format. It's like the way I fix my cars, but without turning the air blue...

The main difference between the standard Escalade and the ESV model is size. ESV refers to ‘Escalade Stretch Vehicle’ which means that it is simply an extended-length version.

Just take care of that oil leak, the other minor things, and the cooling system upgrade - it's more or less set. 🙂 And yes let's see this one finished up, as well as the little surprise I spied. 🙂

Nice find and fix, Basic diagnostics that most "techs" today can't seem to understand. Would have liked to have seen the wiring repair itself to show guys how to do it correctly, but I'd guess you did it right. And as previously stated by others, USE A DAMN JACKSTAND!! Can't do videos like this from a pine box! I'm the owner of a shop in Illinois, and also an ASE certified Master Tech. Another problem ive run into on the later Escalades and gm trucks with the same symptoms is the fuel pressure control module mounted on the frame. Also, a similar problem with wiring harness rubbed through and corroded causing intermittent dies out and no starts. I've repaired a couple that other "Techs" couldn't find. Good Job

Nice fix, gotta love the cheap and easy ones! The harness is suppose to run behind a bracket that is bolted to the power steering pump. Whoever swapped that power steering pump out probably didn’t route it back correctly.

The vehicle looks fairly clean underneath, but I would be wearing safety glasses. The vehicles here in Wisconsin are rusty from the winter road salt . That is a very nice suv , a real diamond in the rough ! Perhaps more videos forthcoming on repairing entertainment system and interior parts?

Had a same issue with a 85 diesel suburban but the wiring damage via the steering actually gave me a custom option. If I left the parking lights on the motor would continue to run with the key off and removed.

Where's your jackstand? I never trust a jack on its own.

Check the wire in the seat between top seat and bottom seat mine rubbed or stretched it is an airbag wire the air bag would come on and of randomly till it stayed solid the wire goes under the seat to the top rear back of the seat mine was deep in the back part of it cheers love these SUVs got a 04 myself with 220k

Last month I bought a 2010 Camaro SS with 6.2L V8 and a 6 spd manual with no oil pressure. Shops checked the oil pressure sensor and told the guy he needed a new oil pump best case or a new motor worst case. Motor definitely had no oil to the top end of the motor. Bought it dirt cheap. I brought it home and decided I would change the oil and filter first before tearing down. Started it up after the oil change and oil pressure came right back. ALWAYS check the simple stuff first! Sold it for 4x what I paid for it in less than 2 weeks...

Funny thing is. I think your video just fixed the same problem on a 05 Chevy 2500 6.0 LS I got from auction. I also replaced the crank sensor in hopes that was it an also got the same codes. I'm about to go take a look see. An let you know lol
