Always.. asking your men sometimes is not a sign of a bad leader. Plus the men will respect you for listening and asking. Combat is often a collaboration of ideas .
Most brass don’t have a clue what’s going on as they sit behind a desk . My uncle and his platoon were dropped off in Danang Vietnam without ammo , how does that happen ?
The _"... thank you!"_ at the very end is the most important part imo, showing appreciation for speaking up whilst *still* keep working the task at had!
Its a huge change shifting from being a student listening in classroom to leading in the field. Huge. Like retiring from career as student and starting new career as leader (and warrior) -- while still learning from doing.
It’s all the same, I feel like leaders are usually born that way. A leader is generally somebody who cares about others is naturally energetic and social. A true leader usually doesn’t enjoy being a leader, they just end up doing it out of necessity for the better of the group.
Ultimately he's talking of mission-type tactics, where the focus lies on communicating the commander's intent behind the order, and allowing his subordinates to find their own specific solution to solve the problem. Developed by the Germans in the 19th century, its adoption by the US military is relatively recent.
Watched Jocko for a long time. I don't think he should run for president. He's too honest, and too smart to get dragged into that particular cesspool. Democracy is 'rule by millions of insane, petty tyrants' (we the voters). It would be cruel and unusual punishment on poor Jocko. He's already served his country enough.
Fact is: It's up to Jocko Willink to decide what he wants and chooses to do. Right now he's going surfing in California, working out some,, training in BJJ, playing guitar and spending a lot of hours doing podcasts, reading and writing books. senjoying
I feel you Jocko on the "writing a clear concise email to your chain of command" LMAO and I will do so some time after work. The reason for the delay though is because I have been in so many "battles" that it is difficult to recount all the "tragedies of war" lol. But it will eventually get done. This I know.
This is great when everyone has a similar mission in mind… but we are more and more in a time where there are those in “charge” who have a completely different ideology and different goals. And to these we say: thank you for making the sacrifice and speaking up, Lt Col Scheller. Thank you for giving up your job for what is right when leaders have no accountability.
@@RhinoAg there is a time to say “no we will not follow those orders. We tried to take it up the chain of command and leadership doesn’t/won’t make a good call here, I’m out. I’m sure Jocko could give more on that than I can. And this clip wasn’t about that necessarily.
I want to hear what Joko thinks about mandatory vaccination for military if you resist you will get a dishonorable discharge after years of dedicated service this impacts your DD214 which impacts employment after military life which impacts disability benefits which impacts retirement pay and healthcare benefits over a vaccination that should be choice.
I think he has a video on it on his channel. From what I know, his stance: if you have a job to do, GET IT DONE! Prior to COVID-19, shots were mandatory when entering certain countries. The vaccination shot has turned into a “political shot” which relativity should stay out the workplace but yet here we are…
My father served in the Marines during the Gulf War. One thing he told me was this: when you sign that dotted line, your ass belongs to the government. That’s part of the contract. He was required to get a bunch of different stuff put into his body. It’s nothing new.
I get what he is saying, and at his rank and position it make sense, but the common soldier would get shit on if he asked his superior "why" we are doing something the way we are doing it."
Special Operations get more leeway but considering we just lost the war....its pretty clear orders don't change much especially when you consider only 1% of military personnel leave the wire and do 98% of the dying.
lmao reading the comment section all I can think of is when Jocko was asked what he thought of masks. He said something like he dislikes wearing them but dislikes hearing people whine about them even more.
i will never agree with the idea that just because a person has a college degree he is given command over many people. Guys like Jocko are the way commissioning should be earned, not just because of a diploma. The military needs smart people, but they don't automatically deserve power over people who gave close to half of that officer's life in the military.
The question is what would you do if your boss, despite your explanation, had said “ sorry Jocko, these are the orders, you have to live with those”…..
I would personally probably go past him in the chain of command, people’s lives are on the line, I’d probably go to my bosses boss, I know you’re typically not supposed to do that but if it means saving my guys that’s what I’m going to do.
@@brandonmolina7603 in that case, we all also know what's going to happen . You will go to your bosses boss as you said, and save your guys for that day. but next day you're going to get dismissed saying you're unable to follow direct orders and that's it, your career, DONE. And those guys of yours.. will be be assigned to a new "leader" that will be able to strike orders to his squad/team without asking back.. and yes.. just as Jocko said, those guys will be probably get killed.. it's a gamble, actually.
@@ANIMNESIXS agree. Like or not, that's how the system is. Unless it's serious war crime shit, never a good option to go above your chain of command to fuss. Not in the long run.
That is the crap I had to deal with at a previous job. Even with it not being the military with your life on the line, it was horrible to deal it. I had a previous leader that took any why question(even the simplest one) as a direct attack on her authority. Then would tell you that you had to follow the orders, and would harass you about why you didn't want to do the task. Even though we never said we weren't going to do it, and we were just asking some clarifying questions. I was so happy when she got fired.
If I was in that lecture hall, I would be tactically scanning for exit points and be ready when.........that Bear of a man decides to eat me...in whole !!
He's socially distanced and doing a presentation, they're not. Yes the masks are lame but those are the rules and this isn't an issue anywhere near close to what Jocko is talking about in the video. I also don't like following speed and parking laws but I'm also not going to whine non stop about them.
How do people still not understand this. Masks are primarily to protect other people people from what you are exhaling, not to protect the person wearing them.
@@iwantlee9510 What do you see as the differences? To me, they're a restriction on what you are allowed to do, for the purpose of limiting the risk you pose to others.
Trooper: "Actually boss, wearing these masks all day increase respiratory illness as they trap exhaled bacteria and likely increase the chances we will catch Covid since they don't stop virus from easily passing through them as described on the mask package. Can we find another way??" Boss: "NOPE. We don't actually care about saving your men."
Have you heard him talk about wearing masks? He would chew you out for whining about such a non issue. I don't like masks either but I'm not going to jack off about how much I hate them all day long.
@ Jocko, Sir, I would follow you into any battle, combat, conflict, and war. There needs to be TWO US PRESIDENTS, the President of the United States of America, and the President of the United States Armed Forces. I nominate and vote for Jocko Willink to be the President of the United States Armed Forces AND of the United States of America!!!! 🇺🇸 THANK YOU, SIR, FOR YOUR SERVICE AND GREAT LEADERSHIP!!!!
@Survival Philosophy That's part of the war, STOP the corruption, STOP the globalists, STOP the new world order, hold leaders and brass accountable for HIGH TREASON and many other crimes. The media ... the main stream, lame stream fake news media are manipulated and controlled. Alternative, Independent news media, that's where the REAL FACTS, TRUTHS, EVIDENCE, AND PROOF are. That's what I RESEARCH, and that's how I discover what the REAL TRUTH is. Also, you have to think, WHISTLE BLOWERS, people who were a part of something or knew something and they blew the whistle to warn the masses to save lives.
@Survival Philosophy By the way, what's your problem?! I didn't mention the media. You did. What's your problem?! Just because I said I'd follow Jocko into battle, combat, conflict, and war, you get your panties in a bunch over it?! Change your profile name to panzie loser!!!! I can tell already where your mind is. PLEASE STOP and go away. You're NOT a Patriot.
Because our nations avengers, us SEALS, go through the worst life experiences and misunderstood, while the devil steals our memories and portrays them in Hollywood movies vies, and orders our deaths.
He has no authority to do that. Amazed that the Naval Academy allowed him to speak. these kids must wear a mask. They must get a vaccine. Unfortunate, I totally disagree with mandatory masks and mandatory vaccines. But that's how it is.
Jocko is great. I really hope the military isn’t going as poorly as the reports say. A guy in Jockos position would get critical race theory training for asking questions now from what I hear.
Questioning authority is not disrespecting authority. Authority that does not allow questioning it, is not authority, it's tyranny. It's demanding authority prove it has the capability to maintain respect for it. It's pushing for authority to step down from its position because it actually has no clue what it's asking for from you. It's telling authority to give you authority to do the thing necessary with necessary tools to actually accomplish the mission. The US passenger aviation industry has the one of the lowest safety incidents records among all forms of travel. Why? Because it is the pilot, the flight attendant, the baggage handlers, the mechanic, the fuel jockey's JOB to question everything because, on average, 200+ souls are on the line every time an plane takes off and you only have one chance to ensure things are done right, the first time because there is no second chance when it's in the air.
Jocko is the physical embodiment of most things good, Theo Von takes the rest. If y’all don’t know what I’m talking about, Theo was on Jocko’s podcast and Jocko was on Theo’s twice. Go watch them. It’s a weird dynamic but they meld so well
@@mohammadzaman1225 if they're so healthy then the thin piece of cloth is unnecessary. It's ironic that the subject of this very video is challenging stupid leadership decisions.
In rebuttal... this is ALSO why, there is an age cap limit on the military. They know, after a point in age, coming in as a fresh recruit, an "xx" year old male is going to stand up and say WTF are you talking about, and go against the system. This is why there is no such thing as a subordinate, saying "NO!" individually, to a higher chain of command. ( Unless it is something factual, not spiratual/emotional) they will listen ( within reason, plausible outcomes) but you will never here "NO!" DIRECTLY AGAINST a direct order. I'm not against the military by any means. But they are against free standing/free thinking individuals against the system. You can give a plausible option, but never say "No!"
Everyone wearing masks in this video is embarrassing. This was a sad time in the US. So many people cowared and didn't stand up for themselves. So many weak people.
They deserted, got wounded or killed, because of us and our arrogance believing we are superior in especially war tactics. Just google and get into muslim warfare history to find out how long they, being of different colture and attitude, gained experience in warfare. Straight back to Mohammed himself retreating, instead of getting crucified. Or, watch the Iron Clad movies, if you have trouble connecting the dots here, and imagine yourself being on a European mid-eval battleground using Bow and Swords and shouting as communication. Instead of creating and helping the locals to advance and further develop tactics and strategies that suite their attitude and lifestyle we forced them into the NATO standard training book. I also see no shame in staying alive and will desert over getting killed every time I have to choose between death and surviving. Therefore I would become a terrorist before a modern soldier in the wars to come.
The students should apply Jocko's lesson immediately with the "mask requirements". How do they not see the lunacy of it all? Why are you wearing masks? Packed like sardines in a room BUT I GOT MY MASK SO ITS ALL GOOD. What a joke.
