It's pretty hard to physically distance yourself at a club, so it should come as no shock that the Covid-19 pandemic has the nightlife industry struggling, with many nightclubs at risk of closing down permanently.
But statistics show nightlife venues were already on the decline before anyone had heard of the coronavirus.
In this video, CBC columnist Uytae Lee explores how we can turn this pandemic into an opportunity to reimagine our nightlife for the better.

From what I've seen in the UK, there is still a huge desire for nightclubs. When distancing and masks end (hopefully by the summer), people will flock back to clubs...have no doubt about that. This is the same for the British pub tradition; it will never end. People want to have fun, and pubs and nightclubs are the perfect setting for that. One-night stands, cheap shots, cheesy songs and getting home at 4am - they are all memories that you'll look fondly upon when you're older. Yeah, we can be unruly, but that's part of being human. Once this is over, people will enjoy being free. The demise of nightclubs would not only affect those directly employed by them, but security personnel, suppliers and DJs are all part of the process. This is why we simply do not need a 'new normal'; the old normal was perfectly fine.

Clubbing has become Whack because it Lost Respect for Dancers. Legit kinds. It reverted to drugs and alcohol which is undermining how it got started.

One thing that I hate about the McDonaldization of nightlife is the blatant sexism. Woman are often incentivized while men are treated like they're just there to spend money. I don't mean this in a red pill misogynistic way either, as a gay man it's just something I've noticed.

As a female-presenting person, I agree with you. I don't really go to nightclubs because I'm completely disinterested in hookup culture, but I also dislike how women are viewed as some kind of asset, like these nightclubs are trying to draw them in just to provide eye candy for the men. It seems wrong somehow.

I think 20-30 yr old kids these days need nightlife back after the pandemic. Too many kids nowadays are depressed, don't feel like they will ever get a job after college. Back 20 yrs ago, my college life was filled with class, gym, basketball, part-time work to get some money, fixing up/driving cars, hanging out at someone's house/different parts of campus/different campuses/different events and especially - Clubbing and hopping from one club to another (it was great, many best memories), the place of release where you can hang w/ friends, dance w/ girlfriends, chill over a drink, buying others drinks, and basically meeting new people and let yourself unwind/let loose a bit. It is a healthy escape as long as you are not drinking TOO much. I think kids these days need that more, instead being too smartphone and social media dependent.

Nightclubs in London are closing because the authorities keeps finding reasons to close them. Its definitely not because of lack of interest. They're doing the same all over the UK, approving planning permission knowing future residents will complain there was a club there "before they moved in".

Night clubs are finished. I was a manager for a large security company supplying doormen to over 15 clubs. The violence I witnessed as14 years working the doors certainly won't be missed. At least the police can be put to better use rather than babysit the cretins that frequent clubs. So glad I'm out of it. Theres no way with social distancing these places can re open. Most are filthy places which during daylight hours you wouldn't even want to step over the threshold. With the impact this virus has had there's not going to be many who would want to be in close contact anyway..

Lots of problems with nightclubs. One trend I saw a few years back was the growth of lounges. The main differences between the two is the emphasis on drinking and food at the lounges. Nightclubs put more emphasis on music and entertainment and tend to be larger due to the need for a dancefloor. Most lounges don't have a dancefloor and people dance anywhere. In many ways the lounges seem like glorified bars to me with no dress code and often a jukebox for music. The lounge also has longer hours which is additional money from the drinks. Nightclubs have cover charges. Many lounges don't or it's just a small amount. A big problem at clubs is crime and violence. Shootings and fights are common even at hookah clubs. The clubs are also more expensive than ever to run with high salaries, insurance and rent. I have seen a few clubs only make it a month or two after opening. It's actually a bad investment. I even know of some cash rich casinos that hesitated to open a nightclub. The Rock music clubs are also struggling due to some of the same problems mostly expense. And then there are the new neighbors. Indeed many clubs in my town have closed due to pressure from newly opened condo owners.

Wow! Thank you so much for explaining this phenomenon. As someone who always tended towards live music with bands I hated clubs in Canada and Australia. But the grimey expat run clubs in Hanoi were wonderful! I felt like I found a new experience to be part of.

It's upsetting because I very much enjoy clubbing, and I only got a taste of it for 3 years before the pandemic shut everything down. I agree though that my favorite clubs aren't the ones that come across as super exclusive but have a more authentic vibe (for lack of a better word). As soon as it's safe to go out clubbing again I'm gonna be right back at it.

Number of nightclubs declining doesn't mean anything. It is due to "mcdonaldism" and commercialization as described in this video. Fewer Bigger clubs subtitute smaller ones and take all the profit. That's deosnt mean that the overall revenue of nightlife is less. But yeah, pretty much the video is on point.

It was easier to go to a club in the 80, 90 and early 2000. It wasn't that complicated. It wasn't that snob. In the period 2015-2020, in some clubs, you need to be in a guestlist if you wish to enter. But no metter if you were well dress and you reserve in advance, if the bouncer don' t like your face and think you're cool enough to enter, you don't enter. No metter if you're in a guest list. Also if there is not enough girls inside, you don't enter. Also, in some places they force you to buy a 200 $ bottle of alchool if you want to get in. Those kind of attitude drag peoples out. And the pandemics were the nail on the cofin.

As the densest areas continue to rise up in value, they have the ability to destroy the community driven ares that make them appealing. Nightlife cannot happen in the suburbs (zoning, neighbor complaints, non walkable) so where will it go? North American cities do not have other dense areas to rely on when the center gets too pricey. The center is the only suitable area for night life. Venues have always jumped on areas in degradation to open up. In that process they bring these areas life. They become hip, and then a more appealing place to live but to a point where what made them appealing in the first place has to leave. What is a downtown with no night life? Are we really creating a Mcdonalized cultural landscape where the rich get to spontaneously meet in person and everyone else takes the bus to meet their Tinder dates?

For what it’s worth,I think he’s right. Nightclub scene gave birth to different genres of music and fashion. The youth usually started the trends; it was their expression People need escape; that’s human Post -pandemic may give us the opportunity I grew up in NYC, clubbed the the 80’s and 90’s and it was huge. Almost extinct in NYC now. That’s a mistake

As someone who has been in the nightclub business since 1999 in NYC...I have seen the decline and it is sad...I've seen entrepreneurs open nightclubs with big expectations and have seen dreams shattered and investors loosing most if not all their investment...it's a shame but this generation does not go out and spend like back in the days...everyone socialises on phones and meets singles on phone's why bother I guess...but here's the thing when you meet someone on your phone, don't you want to go out and have a good time? Don't you want to take a date to a high-end rooftop lounge with other couples and get bottle service and go out to eat wasted at 5am...at least once a week you would find me at Woohop in Chinatown at 5am and the place was packed

I was clubbing in Toronto from 2014-2019 and those were some of the best times of my life. I feel bad for the younger kids who won't get to experience it in the same way.

The people that think the Nightclubs will never be missed are people that never actually went to them. Only wished or hoped to go one day. Unfortunately maybe this day may never come anymore. That´s why you have to live despise of what people might think of you. You may not have a second chance to ever doing so.

I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of these nightclubs permanently shut down. I worked at one where I live. Didn't care for the music, and a lot of losers (a lot of them live nearby) frequent them (sometimes they're on cocaine or other substances that isn't weed). Also lots of fights. Glad I found better work (they were shutting down anyway due to a stabbing). Clubbing is overrated anyway.

How can you blame the millenials on staying more at home. The entrance to a clubs are getting expensier an the drinks inside too and most of the time they are water diluated. Also, now in facebook, tripadvisor, yelp and google people can evaluate and coment on a specific nightclubs. In most cases, the negative comments like rude bouncers that don't allow people althought they are in a guest like. Ruin birthdays and bachelorette parties due to the lack of professionalism of the staf and many other reasons. Well, I'm not surprise millenials chose to stay at home rather to get ripped off or verbally abuse.
